Deep Teeth Cleaning in Las Vegas and Summerlin

Deep Teeth Cleaning in Summerlin

Offering Summerlin South & Spring Valley Unmatched Dental Health Care

How many times did you brush and clean your teeth yesterday? If your answer is less than “twice,” you could be jeopardizing your oral health. Cleaning your teeth is just one of many things you can do to keep your gums and teeth healthy. This allows you to maintain the health of your teeth for the rest of your life, lowers your risk of developing gum disease, and improves the appearance of your smile.

Even though brushing your teeth helps keep them clean, it shouldn’t be the only thing you do to maintain that cleanliness. Appointments at the dentist should be kept at regular intervals so that your teeth can be kept in gleaming condition and so that you can preserve your healthy appearance.

Teeth cleaning in Summerlin is not just about aesthetics; it is an essential health measure. Professional teeth cleaning involves the removal of plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth, which cannot always be achieved by regular brushing alone. Plaque and tartar build-up can lead to oral diseases if not managed properly, making regular visits to the dentist crucial for maintaining oral health. By establishing a consistent dental hygiene routine, you contribute significantly to your overall well-being.

Do I Need a Deep Cleaning?

It is recommended that you get a deep cleaning to remove tartar and germs that a regular toothbrush is unable to reach. Let’s take a more in-depth look at the various reasons why you should schedule regular deep cleanings. We will also discuss ways to reduce the cost of the deep cleaning.

Gum disease often progresses without any pain, which is why many people are unaware of it until it reaches an advanced stage. Deep cleanings are essential to address the buildup of bacteria and tartar below the gum line, which can’t be effectively removed by regular cleanings. These sessions not only help in treating existing gum diseases but also prevent further complications such as bone loss or tooth decay. Moreover, maintaining a healthy diet, regularly flossing, and using recommended mouthwashes can enhance the effectiveness of your deep cleanings and improve oral health.

What Exactly Is a Deep Dental Cleaning?

There are a few synonyms for comprehensive dental cleaning. Scaling and root planing is a common name for the process that the dentist performs. This particular procedure is frequently carried out on patients who suffer from gum disease. The majority of dental practices offer this service to their patients.

Several distinct methods of in-depth cleaning can be utilized, including the following:

  • Preventative Deep Cleaning: The goal of preventative deep cleaning is to assist in lowering the probability of developing gum disease in the near or distant future. Patients who already have periodontal disease are candidates for treatment with this. The utilization of the procedure may also assist in lowering the risk of complications. This may be the only type of treatment that the patient needs to receive to successfully manage gum disease.
  • Therapeutic Deep Cleaning: As opposed to preventative deep cleaning, therapeutic deep cleaning can be quite a bit more intrusive. Patients already suffering from gum disease are the ones who undergo this procedure. In this particular scenario, inflammation is already present in the gums. Additionally, the gums may bleed and have a warm or inflammatory sensation.

During professional dental cleaning, the dentist will pay particular attention to cleaning the areas of the mouth that cannot be reached by brushing alone. This is accomplished by placing a thin instrument in the space between the gums and the teeth. Because people tend to miss the spaces between their teeth when they brush, dental professionals are also trained to clean these areas.

What Actually Happens During a Deep Cleaning?

If your dentist has recommended a deep cleaning  formally called scaling and root planing  you’re probably wondering what that actually involves. Knowing what to expect makes the appointment far less stressful. Here’s exactly what we do, step by step, in our Summerlin office.

Step 1: Local anesthesia

Before any instrumentation begins, we numb the area being treated with local anesthetic. Numbing is essential deep cleaning goes below the gumline where regular cleanings don’t reach, and the tissue there is sensitive. You’ll feel a small pinch from the injection, then nothing. Patients with dental anxiety can also choose [sedation dentistry](/general-dentistry/sedation-dentistry/) options including nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation; ask at booking if either is right for you. Unlike a [routine cleaning](/general-dentistry/preventive-care/), where no anesthesia is needed, scaling and root planing reaches into deeper tissue that genuinely benefits from being numbed.

Step 2: Ultrasonic scaling

The bulk of plaque and tartar removal is done with an ultrasonic scaler — a small handheld instrument that vibrates at a high frequency, breaking up hardened deposits while flushing the area with a gentle water spray. The vibration is what removes the calculus; the water rinses bacteria-laden debris out of the periodontal pockets in real time. You’ll hear a high-pitched sound and feel light vibration but no pain. This stage typically takes 15–25 minutes per quadrant.

Step 3: Hand instrumentation (root planing)

Once the bulk of the deposits are removed, Dr. Cohan or your hygienist switches to specialized hand instruments called scalers and curettes. These reach into the deepest pockets and smooth (“plane”) the root surfaces below the gumline. Smooth root surfaces are critical  bacteria can’t easily re-attach to a polished root the way they cling to rough tartar-covered surfaces. This step is what makes deep cleaning therapeutic rather than just preventive: it actively treats the [gum disease](/general-dentistry/gum-disease/) that caused the pockets in the first place.

Step 4: Antimicrobial irrigation

After scaling and planing, we flush each treated pocket with an antimicrobial rinse (typically chlorhexidine) to reduce the bacterial population that caused the disease in the first place. For deeper pockets or aggressive cases, a localized antibiotic gel may be placed directly into the pocket to provide several days of sustained antimicrobial activity.

How long does deep cleaning take?

Per quadrant: about 45–60 minutes. Most cases require 2–4 quadrants of treatment, so you can expect either two appointments (two quadrants each) or four shorter appointments (one quadrant each), depending on what’s most comfortable for you and what your insurance covers in a single visit. Same-day full-mouth deep cleaning is possible for some patients but isn’t standard — your gum tissue heals better in stages, and most insurance plans only cover two quadrants per visit.

Standard Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning: What’s the Difference?

Many patients arrive at our Summerlin office expecting a standard cleaning, only to be told they need a deep cleaning instead. That’s frustrating — and confusing if no one explains why. The two procedures share a name (“cleaning”) but treat completely different conditions. Here’s how they compare:

Factor

Standard Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

Who needs it

Patients with healthy gums and no bone loss. Routine maintenance.

Patients with active periodontal disease — pocket depths 4mm or deeper, bleeding gums, evidence of bone loss on X-rays.

What’s involved

Removal of plaque and tartar above the gumline. Polishing. Flossing.

Removal of plaque and tartar above AND below the gumline. Smoothing of root surfaces. Antimicrobial irrigation.

Anesthesia

None needed.

Local anesthetic in the treated area. Optional sedation for anxious patients.

Time required

30–45 minutes for the whole mouth.

45–60 minutes per quadrant. Usually 2–4 visits total.

Frequency

Every 6 months for healthy patients.

Once per quadrant when needed; periodontal maintenance every 3–4 months afterward.

Cost (Las Vegas range)

$100–$200 with insurance, $150–$300 without.

$200–$400 per quadrant with insurance, $250–$450 per quadrant without.

ADA dental code

D1110 (adult prophylaxis)

D4341 (4+ teeth per quadrant) or D4342 (1–3 teeth per quadrant)

What it accomplishes

Maintains existing gum health. Prevents future disease.

Treats existing disease. Stops further bone loss. Allows gums to reattach to teeth.

The bottom line: if your gums are healthy, a standard cleaning is the right call. If you have active [gum disease](/general-dentistry/gum-disease/) — and most adults over 30 develop it at some point — a deep cleaning is the only way to actually treat it. Standard cleanings on diseased gums don’t reach the bacteria living below the gumline, which means the disease keeps progressing while you think you’re being preventive. If you’re not sure which category you’re in, a [comprehensive exam](/general-dentistry/preventive-care/) with periodontal charting will give you a clear answer in 15 minutes.

Section 3: Insurance Coverage for Deep Cleaning

Will Insurance Cover My Deep Cleaning?

Most dental insurance plans cover deep cleaning when there’s documented periodontal disease. Coverage depends on three things: how the procedure is coded, what your specific plan covers, and how recently you’ve had a deep cleaning before. Here’s what you need to know before treatment so there are no surprises.

How deep cleaning is coded

Insurance companies use two American Dental Association codes for scaling and root planing:

  • D4341 — Scaling and root planing, four or more teeth per quadrant. Used when most or all of the teeth in a quadrant are affected by periodontal disease.
  • D4342 — Scaling and root planing, one to three teeth per quadrant. Used for localized disease affecting only a few teeth in a quadrant.

These codes are different from D1110 (a regular cleaning) and D4346 (gingivitis treatment, no bone loss). Confusing them is one of the most common reasons claims get denied or downgraded which is why we verify exactly which code applies to your situation before submitting.

When insurance typically covers it

Most plans cover D4341/D4342 when documentation shows:

  • Pocket depths of 4mm or greater on a recent periodontal chart
  • Radiographic evidence of bone loss around the affected teeth
  • Bleeding on probing and other clinical signs of active disease

Coverage levels vary, but most plans pay 50–80% of the procedure cost after your deductible. With most major Las Vegas insurance plans, your out-of-pocket cost for two quadrants typically falls between $150 and $400 total  significantly less than paying privately.

Frequency limits (the catch most patients miss)

Most insurance plans only cover scaling and root planing once every 24–36 months per quadrant. If you’ve had deep cleaning recently, you may need to wait or pay out of pocket for an early re-treatment. This is also why ongoing periodontal maintenance (D4910, every 3–4 months) is so important — it’s the recurring billable service that keeps your gums healthy between deep cleanings.

How we handle insurance for you

Before any treatment begins, we verify your benefits, calculate your exact out-of-pocket cost, and submit a pre-authorization to your insurance plan when one is needed. You receive a written treatment estimate showing what insurance will cover and what you’ll owe  no surprise bills. If your plan denies coverage, we appeal on your behalf with the supporting documentation (pocket charting, X-rays, clinical notes) most plans require. Questions about your specific plan? Call us at (702) 341-9160 or visit our [insurance information page](/patient-info/insurance-and-financial-information/).

Section 4: The Las Vegas Water-Hardness Angle

📌 EDITORIAL NOTE: FACTUAL DATA VERIFIED: Las Vegas Valley Water District reports tap water averages 270–290 ppm (16–17 grains per gallon). Henderson area runs 304 ppm (18 gpg). National average is 60–150 ppm. About 90% of Las Vegas water comes from Lake Mead via the Colorado River, which picks up calcium and magnesium from limestone formations along its path. These figures are accurate as of 2026.

Why Las Vegas Patients Often Need Deep Cleaning Sooner Than National Averages

Here’s something most national dental websites won’t tell you: where you live affects how quickly tartar builds up on your teeth. And Las Vegas residents have a measurable disadvantage.

According to the Las Vegas Valley Water District, our tap water averages 278 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved minerals — about 16 grains per gallon. That makes Las Vegas water some of the hardest in the United States, classified as “very hard” by the U.S. Geological Survey. The national average is between 60 and 150 ppm. In other words: our water carries roughly two to three times the mineral content of the average American household water supply. Henderson runs even higher at around 304 ppm.

Where do those minerals come from? About 90% of our water originates as snowmelt in the Rocky Mountains, then travels down the Colorado River, picking up calcium and magnesium from limestone rock formations along the way. By the time it reaches Lake Mead and your kitchen tap, it’s heavily mineralized.

How this affects your teeth

Plaque is a soft bacterial film that hardens into tartar (calculus) when minerals from your saliva  and from the water you drink and rinse with  calcify into the plaque. More minerals in the water means tartar forms faster. Las Vegas patients often see calculus accumulating between regular cleaning visits at rates we wouldn’t see in patients we’ve treated in regions with softer water.

This is why some Summerlin and Las Vegas patients benefit from cleaning visits every 3 to 4 months instead of the standard 6 and why it’s especially important to address gum disease early before mineral-accelerated buildup makes it worse. It’s also why a [water flosser (Waterpik)](/waterpik-vs-flossing-the-great-comparison/) used with filtered or distilled water is one of the most effective at-home tools we recommend for Las Vegas patients specifically.

Section 5: Pre/Post-Procedure Instructions

Before and After Your Deep Cleaning

A successful deep cleaning is partly your dentist’s job and partly yours. Here’s exactly what to do before and after the appointment to make sure your gums heal well and the treatment delivers the long-term result you’re paying for.

Before your appointment

  • Eat a normal meal 1–2 hours beforehand. You’ll be numb afterward and chewing will be awkward for a few hours. Going in well-fed prevents low-blood-sugar lightheadedness.
  • Take any prescribed pre-medication. Patients with certain heart conditions, joint replacements, or compromised immune systems may need a single dose of antibiotics one hour before treatment. We’ll let you know if this applies to you.
  • Take ibuprofen 600mg one hour before (only if you can take it safely). Pre-emptive ibuprofen reduces post-procedure inflammation and discomfort more effectively than taking it afterward.
  • Brush and floss as usual. Don’t skip clean teeth make the procedure easier and faster.
  • Tell us about any medications you’ve started. Especially blood thinners, bone-health medications (bisphosphonates), or new prescriptions. We’ll adjust the treatment plan if needed. If you’re a [new patient](/patient-info/), our intake form covers this  just make sure it’s complete before your appointment.

First 24 hours after

  • Stick to soft, lukewarm foods. Yogurt, eggs, smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes, pasta, soft fish. Avoid anything crunchy, sharp, hot, or spicy.
  • No alcohol or smoking for at least 24 hours — both significantly slow gum healing and can trigger painful dry-socket-like inflammation in treated areas.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water 2–3 times (½ tsp salt in 8 oz warm water). Don’t use commercial mouthwash with alcohol  it stings and irritates healing tissue.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief as needed. Ibuprofen 400–600mg every 6 hours typically handles any discomfort. Tylenol works as a backup if you can’t take ibuprofen.
  • Keep brushing and flossing  gently. Soft toothbrush, light pressure, especially around the treated areas. Skipping cleaning makes things worse, not better.

Day 2 through 1 week

  • Gum sensitivity should decrease daily. Mild bleeding when brushing the first 2–3 days is normal; persistent or heavy bleeding is not.
  • Cold sensitivity is common temporarily. As your gums tighten back to your teeth, exposed root surfaces may feel cold-sensitive for 1–4 weeks. Sensodyne or a similar potassium-nitrate toothpaste used twice daily helps significantly.
  • Resume normal foods gradually. Most patients are back to eating anything by day 3–4.

When to call us

Most recoveries are uneventful, but contact us at (702) 341-9160 if you experience:

  • Heavy or pulsing bleeding more than 24 hours after treatment
  • Severe pain that increases instead of decreases after day 2
  • Swelling of the face or jaw, or a fever above 100.4°F
  • A foul taste, pus, or visible discharge near the treated area
  • Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing

Section 6: Long-Term Gum Health Maintenance

Keeping Your Gums Healthy After a Deep Cleaning

A deep cleaning isn’t a one-time fix — it’s the start of a long-term program to keep periodontal disease from coming back. Without follow-up maintenance, the bacteria that caused the original problem repopulate the periodontal pockets within 60–90 days, and you’re back where you started. Here’s what the long-term plan looks like.

Periodontal maintenance: 3-month vs. 6-month recall

After deep cleaning, most patients shift from the standard 6-month cleaning schedule to periodontal maintenance every 3–4 months for at least the first year. The shorter interval is critical because periodontal bacteria recolonize quickly — every 90 days is roughly the timeline before bacterial populations rebuild to disease-causing levels.

Periodontal maintenance (insurance code D4910) is more thorough than a regular cleaning. It includes pocket-depth measurements, sub-gingival scaling where needed, and a careful re-evaluation of any areas that haven’t fully healed. Insurance plans typically cover D4910 with the same frequency as standard cleanings, so the cost is comparable.

If your gums respond well pockets shrink to 3mm or less, no bleeding, no progression  Dr. Cohan may extend you back to a 6-month schedule after the first year. If progression continues, you stay on the 3-month interval. The schedule is driven by your tissue, not a calendar.

At-home tools that genuinely make a difference

  • Electric toothbrush. Oscillating-rotating or sonic toothbrushes (Oral-B, Sonicare) remove 21% more plaque than manual brushes in clinical studies. The investment pays for itself in fewer maintenance visits.
  • Water flosser (Waterpik). Especially valuable for Las Vegas patients given our hard-water tartar acceleration. A Waterpik reaches into periodontal pockets that floss can’t access. Use distilled or filtered water — tap water adds minerals. (We’ve written a [detailed comparison of Waterpik vs traditional flossing](/waterpik-vs-flossing-the-great-comparison/) if you’re deciding between them.)
  • Prescription mouthrinse. For the first 1–2 weeks after deep cleaning, we may prescribe chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% rinse. After healing, we transition to a daily over-the-counter antimicrobial rinse like Listerine or CloSYS.
  • Interdental brushes. Small bottle-brush style cleaners that get into spaces too tight or open for floss. Especially useful around crowns, bridges, and implants.

What happens if you skip maintenance?

Untreated or recurrent [periodontal disease](/general-dentistry/gum-disease/) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35  more common than cavities. Research has also linked chronic gum inflammation to [increased cardiovascular risk](/the-link-between-heart-disease-and-gum-disease/), making the consequences more than just dental. The progression is gradual: gums recede, bone loss continues, teeth become loose, and eventually need extraction. [Dental implants](/implants/) and [bridges](/restorative-dentistry/bridges/) can replace lost teeth, but at far greater cost than the maintenance schedule that would have prevented the loss. The math always favors prevention.

What to Expect from a Deep Teeth Cleaning Procedure in Summerlin

Call +1(702) 341-9160 or contact us online today to schedule an appointment and learn more about our Summerlin deep cleaning services.

By Dr. Marianne Cohan, DDS, AACD, AAFE | Summerlin Dental Solutions | Updated March 2026

If your dentist has recommended a deep teeth cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing (SRP), you likely have questions about what the procedure involves, how it will feel, how long it takes, and what happens afterward. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, we believe that informed patients are comfortable patients. This guide walks you through every step of the deep cleaning process so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your appointment at our Summerlin office. A deep cleaning is not a routine cleaning. It is a therapeutic procedure specifically designed to treat active periodontal (gum) disease by removing bacteria, tartar, and infected tissue from below the gumline where your toothbrush and floss cannot reach. When performed by an experienced provider using modern technology in a calm, focused environment, it is one of the most effective treatments in all of dentistry for halting the progression of gum disease and saving teeth that might otherwise be lost.

Why You Might Need a Deep Cleaning

standard preventive cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from the visible surfaces of your teeth above the gumline. It is a maintenance procedure designed for patients with healthy gums. But when plaque and tartar accumulate below the gumline and bacteria colonize the periodontal pockets surrounding your tooth roots, a standard cleaning is not sufficient. The infection is deeper than a prophylaxis can reach. At this stage, your dentist measures the depth of your periodontal pockets using a small probe. Healthy pockets measure 1 to 3 millimeters. Pockets of 4 millimeters or deeper indicate active gum disease that requires treatment. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Marianne Cohan uses our AI-assisted diagnostic system alongside clinical probing to assess the extent of disease. The AI analyzes your radiographs for subtle patterns of bone loss that might not be visible to the human eye, ensuring nothing is missed. Common signs that you may need a deep cleaning include:
  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen, or tender gum tissue
  • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth (recession)
  • Persistent bad breath that does not improve with brushing
  • Teeth that feel loose or have shifted position
  • Visible tartar buildup below the gumline
  • Bone loss visible on dental X-rays
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation promptly. Patients who delay deep cleaning risk progression to advanced periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss requiring dental implantsbridges, or dentures.

Before Your Deep Cleaning: What Happens First

Your deep cleaning begins with a thorough evaluation. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, your first visit includes comprehensive digital imaging (periapical radiographs and/or CBCT 3D imaging as clinically indicated), AI-assisted radiograph analysis, full periodontal charting (measuring pocket depths at six points around every tooth), and a detailed discussion of findings, treatment options, and costs. Dr. Cohan reviews your complete medical history and medication list because certain conditions (diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders) and medications (blood thinners, bisphosphonates, immunosuppressants) can affect treatment planning and healing. She coordinates with your physician when necessary to ensure your deep cleaning is safe and appropriately timed. Before treatment begins, our team verifies your dental insurance benefits and provides an itemized cost estimate so there are no surprises. For out-of-pocket balances, 0% interest financing through HFD provides approval in under 60 seconds with no credit score impact. We also accept CareCredit, all major credit cards, and HSA/FSA accounts.

During Your Deep Cleaning: Step by Step

A deep cleaning is typically completed over two appointments, with one side of your mouth treated at each visit. This allows your hygienist to work thoroughly while keeping you comfortable, and gives the treated side time to begin healing.

Step 1: Anesthesia and Comfort

Because deep cleaning involves work below the gumline where tissue is sensitive, a local anesthetic is administered to completely numb the treatment area. Dr. Cohan applies a topical numbing gel before any injection so you do not feel the needle. Most patients tell us they were unaware the injection was given at all. For patients who experience dental anxiety, we offer multiple levels of sedation: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild relaxation, oral conscious sedation for moderate anxiety, and IV sedation administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist for patients who want to be completely unaware during the procedure. Because we see one patient at a time, the calm, private, quiet environment itself helps anxious patients feel more at ease than they would in a busy multi-patient office.

Step 2: Scaling

Scaling is the first active phase. Your hygienist uses a combination of ultrasonic scaling instruments (which use high-frequency vibration to break apart heavy tartar deposits) and hand instruments (curettes and scalers) to carefully remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial deposits from the tooth surfaces and from within the periodontal pockets below the gumline. The ultrasonic scaler also flushes the pockets with an antimicrobial irrigation solution to help eliminate bacteria.

Step 3: Root Planing

Immediately after scaling, root planing smooths the root surfaces of your teeth. Bacteria accumulate in the microscopic irregularities on root surfaces. By smoothing these surfaces, root planing removes residual bacteria and toxins and creates a clean surface that allows your gum tissue to reattach to the tooth root as it heals. This reattachment is the key to reducing pocket depths and controlling the disease long-term.

Step 4: Antibiotics and Localized Treatment

After scaling and root planing, Dr. Cohan may place a localized antibiotic (such as Arestin) directly into the deepest periodontal pockets. This slow-release medication continues to kill bacteria for days after the procedure, enhancing healing and reducing the chance of reinfection.

Step 5: Post-Procedure Instructions

Before you leave, our team provides detailed aftercare instructions. You receive Dr. Cohan’s direct contact information so you can reach her personally with any questions during recovery.

After Your Deep Cleaning: Recovery and What to Expect

After the local anesthetic wears off (one to three hours), it is normal to experience some tenderness and sensitivity:
  • Mild soreness: Treated gums may be tender for two to five days. Over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen is usually sufficient.
  • Sensitivity: Teeth may be temporarily sensitive to hot, cold, and sweet. Sensitive-formula toothpaste and a prescription fluoride rinse help significantly.
  • Minor bleeding: Light bleeding when brushing the treated area is normal for the first few days.
  • Gum tightening: As gums heal, they tighten and firm around your teeth. This is the desired outcome and indicates tissue reattachment.
Most patients return to normal activities the same day. If you received oral or IV sedation, plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
Important: Do not skip your second appointment. Both sides of your mouth need to be treated for the therapy to be effective. Leaving one side untreated allows bacteria from the untreated side to reinfect the treated side.

Follow-Up: Periodontal Maintenance

Four to six weeks after your deep cleaning, Dr. Cohan schedules a follow-up evaluation to assess gum response. She re-measures pocket depths, compares them to pre-treatment measurements, and evaluates tissue health. In most cases, pocket depths decrease significantly and gum tissue appears healthier. Going forward, your regular cleanings will be classified as periodontal maintenance rather than standard preventive cleanings, typically scheduled every three to four months. Periodontal disease is a chronic condition. The bacteria can return if not monitored consistently. Between visits, brush twice daily, floss daily (read our Waterpik vs. flossing guide for Dr. Cohan’s recommendation), and stay hydrated in the Las Vegas desert climate where dry mouth accelerates bacterial growth.

The Connection Between Gum Disease and Your Overall Health

A deep cleaning is not just a dental investment. It is a whole-body health investment. Decades of peer-reviewed research have established clear links between severe gum disease and serious systemic health conditions, including cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, hypertension), diabetes (gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control, and uncontrolled blood sugar worsens gum disease), respiratory infections including pneumonia, pregnancy complications including preeclampsia and preterm labor, and infertility in both men and women. Once the infection in your mouth is treated, your immune system strengthens and your body is better equipped to manage these underlying conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything patients from The Summit, The Ridges, Queensridge, Henderson, Centennial Hills, and Spring Valley need to know about deep teeth cleaning at Summerlin Dental Solutions — the practice voted Best of Las Vegas 19 times.

Why Deep Teeth Cleaning Is Oneof the Most Important Procedures in Dentistry

If your dentist or hygienist has recommended a deep teeth cleaning — also known as scaling and root planing — it means they have identified signs of gum disease that go beyond what a standard cleaning can address. This is not a cosmetic procedure or an upsell. It is a clinically necessary intervention to stop bacterial infection from destroying the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place. Left untreated, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults — and it has been linked to serious systemic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes complications, and respiratory infections.

At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Marianne Cohan and her team perform deep teeth cleanings with a combination of clinical expertise, advanced diagnostic technology, and genuine compassion for patients who may be anxious about the procedure. Below are the 20 questions patients most frequently ask about deep cleaning, answered with the transparency and detail you deserve.

20 Frequently Asked Questions About Deep Teeth Cleaning

Q1. What is a deep teeth cleaning and how is it different from a regular cleaning?

A regular dental cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth above the gum line. A deep teeth cleaning — technically called scaling and root planing — goes below the gum line to remove hardened tartar deposits, bacterial toxins, and infected tissue from the root surfaces of your teeth and the periodontal pockets that have formed around them. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Cohan uses our AI-assisted diagnostic imaging and digital X-rays to precisely map the depth and severity of periodontal pockets before treatment begins, ensuring the most thorough and targeted cleaning possible. If you are experiencing bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or gum recession, a deep cleaning may be exactly what you need to stop the progression of gum disease and protect your teeth for the long term.

Q2. How do I know if I need a deep cleaning instead of a regular cleaning?

Your dentist or hygienist determines whether you need a deep cleaning by measuring the depth of the periodontal pockets around each tooth using a small probe. Healthy pockets measure 1–3 millimeters. When pockets reach 4 millimeters or deeper, it indicates that bacteria and tartar have migrated below the gum line and a standard cleaning cannot reach them. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Cohan combines periodontal probing with our 3D cone beam CT scanner (CBCT) and AI-assisted radiological analysis to identify bone loss and hidden infection that may not be visible during a visual exam alone. This advanced diagnostic technology allows her to catch gum disease earlier and more accurately than traditional methods, which is one of the key reasons patients from The Summit, The Ridges, Queensridge, and throughout the Las Vegas Valley trust our practice for periodontal care.

Q3. Is a deep teeth cleaning painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during a deep cleaning, especially when performed with modern techniques and proper anesthesia. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Cohan uses local anesthesia to numb the treatment area before beginning, so you should not feel any sharp pain during the procedure. For patients who experience dental anxiety, we offer a full menu of sedation dentistry options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild relaxation, oral sedation for moderate anxiety, and IV sedation for patients who want to feel as though they slept through the entire appointment. We also provide comfort amenities at every chair — warm blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and personal entertainment screens — so your experience feels more like a spa visit than a dental procedure. Our team is hands down the friendliest you will ever encounter at a dental office, and they will check in with you throughout the procedure to ensure you are comfortable at every moment.

Q4. How much does a deep teeth cleaning cost in Las Vegas?

Deep teeth cleaning costs in Las Vegas typically range from $200 to $400 per quadrant (your mouth is divided into four quadrants), meaning a full-mouth deep cleaning generally costs between $800 and $1,600 before insurance. The exact cost depends on the severity of your gum disease, the number of quadrants requiring treatment, and whether additional therapies such as antibiotic placement are needed. Most dental insurance plans cover a significant portion of scaling and root planing because it is classified as a medically necessary periodontal treatment, not a cosmetic procedure. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, our team will verify your insurance benefits before treatment and provide a detailed cost estimate so you know exactly what to expect. For patients without insurance or with remaining out-of-pocket costs, we offer 0% interest financing through HFD with approval in under a minute and no impact on your credit score.

Q5. How long does a deep cleaning take?

A deep cleaning typically takes 45 minutes to an hour per quadrant. Depending on the severity of your condition, Dr. Cohan may complete all four quadrants in a single visit or spread the treatment across two appointments to maximize your comfort. Most patients at Summerlin Dental Solutions complete their deep cleaning in one to two visits. The TRIOS digital scanner and our AI-assisted diagnostics allow Dr. Cohan to plan the procedure with precision before treatment begins, minimizing time in the chair while ensuring no area of concern is missed. Our centrally located Summerlin office at 851 S Rampart Blvd is easily accessible from The Summit, The Ridges, and Queensridge, so scheduling multiple visits is convenient for residents throughout the western Las Vegas Valley.

Q6. What happens if I don’t get a deep cleaning when my dentist recommends it?

Delaying or declining a recommended deep cleaning allows gum disease to progress. What starts as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding) can advance to periodontitis, where the bacterial infection destroys the bone and connective tissue supporting your teeth. Once bone is lost, it does not grow back on its own. Advanced periodontitis leads to loose teeth, shifting teeth, painful abscesses, and ultimately tooth loss — often requiring expensive restorative treatments like dental implants, bridges, or dentures to replace the teeth that could have been saved with a timely deep cleaning. Research has also linked untreated gum disease to increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, and respiratory infections. The cost of a deep cleaning today is a fraction of the cost — both financial and physical — of treating advanced gum disease later.

Q7. What should I expect after a deep teeth cleaning?

After a deep cleaning, it is normal to experience some tenderness, mild swelling, and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days. Your gums may bleed slightly when brushing for the first 24–48 hours. Dr. Cohan provides detailed post-treatment instructions and may prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse or place localized antibiotics in the deepest periodontal pockets to support healing. Most patients report that the discomfort is mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Within one to two weeks, most patients notice a significant improvement: gums appear pinker and healthier, bleeding stops, and breath freshens as the bacterial load is reduced. Dr. Cohan schedules a follow-up visit to re-measure pocket depths and confirm that healing is progressing as expected.

Q8. Does dental insurance cover deep teeth cleaning in Las Vegas?

Yes, most dental insurance plans cover deep teeth cleaning (scaling and root planing) because it is classified as a medically necessary periodontal treatment rather than an elective or cosmetic procedure. Coverage typically falls under your plan’s “basic” or “major” services category at 60–80% after your deductible is met. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, our front office team will verify your insurance benefits before treatment, submit pre-authorization if required by your carrier, and provide a clear breakdown of your estimated out-of-pocket costs so there are no surprises. Visit our insurance and financial information page for details on the plans we accept and our approach to maximizing your benefits.

Q9. Can I eat after a deep teeth cleaning?

You can eat after a deep cleaning, but Dr. Cohan recommends waiting until the local anesthesia has fully worn off to avoid accidentally biting your cheek, tongue, or lip. For the first 24–48 hours, stick to soft, lukewarm foods and avoid anything crunchy, spicy, acidic, or extremely hot or cold. Yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soups are all excellent choices during the initial healing period. Avoid using a straw for the first day, as the suction can disturb the healing gum tissue. After two to three days, most patients return to their normal diet as tenderness resolves.

Q10. How often do I need a deep cleaning?

A deep cleaning is typically a one-time therapeutic treatment for active gum disease rather than a recurring procedure. However, after your deep cleaning is complete, Dr. Cohan will place you on a periodontal maintenance schedule — usually every three to four months rather than the standard six-month cleaning interval — to prevent gum disease from returning. These maintenance visits are shorter and less intensive than the initial deep cleaning, but they are essential for monitoring pocket depths, removing any new bacterial buildup below the gum line, and keeping your gums healthy long-term. Regular preventive care visits at Summerlin Dental Solutions are the best investment you can make in protecting the results of your deep cleaning.

Q11. What technology does Summerlin Dental Solutions use for deep cleaning diagnosis?

Summerlin Dental Solutions uses the most advanced dental technology available to diagnose and treat gum disease with precision. Our AI-assisted radiological analysis system reviews diagnostic images alongside Dr. Cohan to identify bone loss and hidden infection that the human eye alone might miss. The 3D cone beam CT scanner (CBCT) provides comprehensive three-dimensional views of your jawbone, teeth, and periodontal structures, revealing the full extent of any damage. The TRIOS digital scanner captures detailed digital impressions without uncomfortable putty trays, which is used for treatment planning and monitoring progress. Digital X-rays deliver instant images at up to 90% less radiation than conventional film. Our soft tissue laser can be used for minimally invasive gum treatment with faster healing. And dual-screen exam rooms let you see exactly what Dr. Cohan sees, so you understand your diagnosis and treatment plan completely before anything begins.

Q12. Is Dr. Cohan qualified to perform deep cleanings and treat gum disease?

Dr. Marianne Cohan is exceptionally qualified to diagnose and treat all stages of gum disease. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she received the Periodontics Award — specifically recognizing her excellence in the treatment of gum and supporting tissue disease — as well as the Operative Dentistry Award. With over 31 years of clinical experience and more than 25 years serving the Las Vegas community, Dr. Cohan has treated thousands of periodontal cases. She is an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (fewer than 1% of dentists), a Best Dentist in America through peer nomination, and a 19-time Best of Las Vegas winner. She maintains active memberships in the AAFE, AAID, ADA, Academy of Laser Dentistry, and the Academy of General Dentistry. When it comes to the health of your gums, you genuinely could not be in better hands.

Q13. Does Summerlin Dental Solutions offer sedation for deep cleaning?

Yes. Summerlin Dental Solutions offers three levels of sedation dentistry for patients who experience anxiety about deep cleanings or any dental procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) provides gentle relaxation while keeping you fully conscious. Oral sedation offers a deeper level of calm through prescription medication taken before your appointment. IV sedation is available for patients who want the deepest level of comfort and may not remember the procedure at all. Dr. Cohan evaluates each patient individually and recommends the appropriate sedation level based on your anxiety, the extent of treatment needed, and your medical history. Combined with our spa-like comfort amenities — warm blankets, noise-canceling headphones, complimentary beverages, and personal entertainment screens at every chair — the deep cleaning experience at Summerlin Dental Solutions is as comfortable as modern dentistry can make it.

Yes. Summerlin Dental Solutions is located just north of Spring Valley along the 215 Beltway, approximately 10–15 minutes from most Spring Valley neighborhoods. Q18. What makes the deep cleaning experience at Summerlin Dental Solutions different from other dental offices?

Three things make the experience fundamentally different. First, the technology: our AI-assisted diagnostics, CBCT 3D imaging, and digital scanning give Dr. Cohan a level of diagnostic precision that most offices simply do not have, meaning your deep cleaning is more thorough and more targeted. Second, the environment: after a complete renovation, our office features a gorgeous, spa-inspired interior with warm lighting, contemporary design, and comfort amenities at every chair including warm blankets, noise-canceling headphones, complimentary beverages, and personal entertainment screens. Patients consistently tell us it feels more like a wellness retreat than a dental office. Third, the team: from the front desk staff who greet you by name to the hygienists who explain every step with patience and care, the people at Summerlin Dental Solutions are hands down the friendliest, most genuine dental team patients have ever encountered. Hundreds of five-star reviews and a Best Customer Service award from the Las Vegas Review-Journal confirm it.

Q19. Can gum disease come back after a deep cleaning?

Gum disease can return if proper maintenance is not followed after treatment. That is why Dr. Cohan places every deep cleaning patient on a periodontal maintenance schedule — typically cleanings every three to four months rather than every six — to monitor your gum health and remove any new bacterial buildup before it can cause damage. Good daily oral hygiene is equally important: brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, flossing or using an interdental cleaner daily, and using any prescribed antimicrobial rinse. Patients who commit to this combined approach of professional maintenance and home care see excellent long-term results. Dr. Cohan and her team will work with you to create a personalized maintenance plan that keeps your gums healthy for life.

Advanced Technology for Precise Deep Cleaning Diagnosis and Treatment

The accuracy of a deep cleaning depends entirely on the accuracy of the diagnosis that precedes it. Summerlin Dental Solutions has invested in every meaningful advancement in dental technology to ensure that Dr. Cohan can see what others miss, treat with precision, and deliver the most comfortable experience possible.

AI-Assisted Radiology

Our artificial intelligence diagnostic system reviews every radiographic image alongside Dr. Cohan, identifying subtle patterns of bone loss, hidden calculus deposits, and early-stage periodontal damage that traditional visual review might miss. For deep cleaning patients, this means a more complete diagnosis and a more thorough treatment plan from the start.

3D CBCT Scanner

The cone beam computed tomography scanner produces detailed three-dimensional views of your jawbone, teeth, and periodontal structures in seconds. Unlike flat X-rays, CBCT reveals bone loss from every angle, helping Dr. Cohan determine the exact severity and distribution of gum disease — critical information for planning the most effective deep cleaning approach.

TRIOS Digital Scanner

This handheld device captures highly detailed digital impressions of your teeth and gums in minutes, completely eliminating the messy putty trays that most patients dread. For periodontal patients, the TRIOS scanner provides precise baseline measurements that can be compared to post-treatment scans to objectively measure healing and improvement.

Soft Tissue Laser

Our dental laser enables minimally invasive gum treatment with faster healing, less bleeding, and significantly less discomfort than traditional surgical methods. For patients with deeper periodontal pockets, laser-assisted therapy can be used alongside scaling and root planing to remove diseased tissue and promote gum reattachment.

Digital X-Rays

Delivering instant diagnostic images at up to 90% less radiation than conventional film, digital X-rays are used to assess bone levels around each tooth and identify areas of concern before and after deep cleaning. The images appear immediately on our dual-screen exam room monitors so you can see exactly what Dr. Cohan sees.

Dual-Screen Exam Rooms

Every treatment room features dual monitors that display your diagnostic images, X-rays, and treatment plan in real time. This transparency turns your appointment into a collaborative conversation — you see the pockets, the bone loss, and the improvement after treatment, making you an informed partner in every decision about your care.

Computerized Smile Design

While primarily used for cosmetic treatments like veneers and smile makeovers, our smile design software also helps Dr. Cohan visualize the restorative path forward for patients whose gum disease has caused tooth loss or shifting, connecting periodontal treatment to long-term smile restoration goals.
