What Counts as a Dental Emergency? A Quick-Action Guide for Las Vegas Patients
Some dental problems require an emergency visit and fast action. Here is a quick-reference guide to the most common dental emergencies Las Vegas patients face, what to do in the first 30 minutes, and how urgently you need to be seen:
Emergency Type
What to Do Immediately
Urgency Level
Approximate Cost
Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick up by the crown (never the root). Rinse gently. Place back in the socket or keep in milk. Get to the dentist within 30 to 60 minutes.
CRITICAL: Minutes matter. You have the best chance of saving the tooth if you act within an hour.
$200 to $500 reimplantation; $3,000 to $5,500 implant if lost
Severe Toothache
Rinse with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain medication. Do not place aspirin directly on gums. Call the dentist immediately.
URGENT: Same-day. There is a high probability of infection or deep decay that could potentially spread.
$150 to $300 exam + X-ray; $200 to $1,200 treatment
Broken or Cracked Tooth
Rinse mouth. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any fragments. Avoid chewing on that side.
URGENT: Same-day. Sharp edges can cut tissue; exposed nerves need protection.
$300 to $2,000 depending on crown, filling, or bonding needed
Dental Abscess
Do not pop or squeeze. Rinse with salt water. Seek immediate care. Infection can spread to jaw, neck, or brain.
CRITICAL: Same day. An untreated abscess can become life-threatening.
$200 to $800 drainage and antibiotics; root canal or extraction may follow
Lost Crown or Veneer
Save the restoration. Try placing it back with dental cement or toothpaste temporarily. Avoid hot/cold foods on that tooth.
SAME-DAY: An exposed tooth is vulnerable to fracture and sensitivity.
$200 to $500 recement; $800 to $2,500 if new crown needed
Broken Braces Wire
Cover the sharp end with dental wax or a cotton ball. Do not cut the wire yourself. Call for a same-day appointment.
SOON: Within 24 to 48 hours unless the wire is causing tissue damage.
$75 to $200 wire repair
Soft Tissue Injury
Apply gentle pressure with gauze. Rinse with salt water. If bleeding does not stop in 15 minutes, seek care.
URGENT: If the bleeding continues or the wound is deep, seek immediate care.
$100 to $400 depending on sutures needed
At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Marianne Cohan sees dental emergencies the same day they are reported. Please call +1(702) 341-9160 and let us know it is an emergency. We will make room for you.

The Real Cost of Waiting: What Happens When You Delay Emergency Dental Care
In Las Vegas, where urgent care clinics and hospital ERs are often overwhelmed, many patients with dental emergencies try to wait it out, manage the pain at home, or put off care, hoping the problem resolves on its own. It almost never does. Here is what happens when you delay treatment:
Delay Duration
What Is Happening
Cost Escalation
Hours (0 to 6)
Pain intensifying. The infection is spreading to the surrounding tissue. A knocked-out tooth loses viability with every passing minute.
A $200 reimplantation becomes a $4,500 implant. A $300 filling becomes a $1,200 root canal.
A $500 treatment becomes $1,500 to $3,000. Infection may require antibiotics plus drainage plus root canal or extraction.
Weeks (1 to 4)
Bone infection (osteomyelitis) is possible. The tooth is now unsalvageable. Infection spreading systemically. ER visit likely.
The cost for extraction, implant, and bone grafting ranges from $3,000 to over $15,000. The hospital ER bill will be an additional expense. Insurance may not cover delay-related complications.
A Las Vegas hospital ER can treat your pain with medication, but they cannot perform root canals, reimplant teeth, place crowns, or address the actual dental problem. You will leave with a prescription and a bill of $500 to $2,000, and you will still need to see a dentist. Calling Summerlin Dental Solutions first saves you time, money, and unnecessary suffering.
How Technology Makes Emergency Treatment Faster and More Precise
When you arrive at Summerlin Dental Solutions with a dental emergency, every minute matters. The advanced technology in our Summerlin office allows Dr. Cohan to diagnose and treat emergencies faster and more accurately than traditional methods:
Technology
What It Does
How It Helps in an Emergency
AI-Assisted Radiology
FDA-cleared AI analyzes X-rays in real time, flagging fractures, infections, bone loss, and pathology in color-coded overlays.
The AI instantly identifies the source of your pain and the extent of damage. There is no need to wait for a radiologist. Dr. Cohan sees the full picture within minutes of your arrival.
3D CBCT Scanner
The 3D CBCT Scanner generates a complete 3D image of the teeth, jaw, nerves, and bone in a matter of seconds.
Reveals fractures invisible on standard X-rays, shows infection spread into bone, and identifies nerve proximity before extraction or surgery. It is crucial for intricate emergency situations.
TRIOS Digital Scanner
3D digital impressions without putty.
If a same-day crown or restoration is needed, the digital scan starts the process immediately. There is no need to wait for the putty to set. Faster fabrication, faster relief.
Laser Dentistry
The soft tissue laser is used for incision, drainage, and tissue management.
The procedure drains abscesses with minimal bleeding and promotes faster healing compared to a scalpel. Decontaminates infected tissue. Reduces post-procedure discomfort significantly.
Smile Design Software
The software provides a digital preview of the restorative outcomes.
For emergencies involving visible front teeth, it shows you how the repair or replacement will look before proceeding. This feature alleviates the uncertainty of how your smile will appear post-treatment.

Scared of the Dentist? Emergencies Do Not Have to Be Traumatic
Dental emergencies are terrifying enough without adding dental anxiety on top. Many Las Vegas patients who come to us in pain have been avoiding the dentist for years because of fear, and the emergency is often the direct result of that avoidance. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, sedation dentistry is available for every emergency procedure:
✓ Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
The effects of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) begin within minutes and dissipate within the same timeframe. You are awake and relaxed. Drive yourself home after.
✓ Oral sedation
Prescription pill taken before your appointment. Deep relaxation. The procedure is performed under limited memory. Requires a driver.
✓ IV sedation
Deeper sedation is necessary for severe anxiety or complex emergency procedures. Little to no memory. Requires a driver.
Patients who have not seen a dentist in years consistently say the same thing after their emergency visit: “I wish I had come sooner. It was nothing like I expected.” Read their stories on our patient reviews page. Dr. Cohan, voted Best Dentist in Summerlin and Las Vegas 19 times with a 4.9 Google rating and A+ BBB rating, has built her practice specifically to welcome patients who are afraid.

A dental emergency does not wait for a convenient time. It happens at dinner, on vacation, in the middle of a workday, or late at night. When it does, what you need is not an overwhelmed ER waiting room where no one can actually fix the problem. What you need is an experienced dentist with the right technology, the right training, and the ability to see you today.
At Summerlin Dental Solutions, Dr. Marianne Cohan has been treating dental emergencies in Las Vegas for more than 31 years. As a 19-time Best of Las Vegas award winner, she brings the highest level of clinical expertise, the most advanced diagnostic technology available in any private dental office in the region, and a team that patients consistently describe as the friendliest, most compassionate staff they have ever encountered at any healthcare facility.
Our office is located at 851 S. Rampart Blvd., Suite 230, in a Class A professional building in the heart of Summerlin. We reserve time in the schedule every day specifically for urgent and emergency cases, and we make every effort to see emergency patients the same day they call.
Whethe
r you are dealing with a severe toothache, a knocked-out tooth, a broken crown, a dental abscess, or any other urgent dental condition, Summerlin Dental Solutions is the place to call first. We serve patients from across the Las Vegas valley, including Summerlin, Henderson, Spring Valley, Desert Shores, Rhodes Ranch, Centennial Hills, and beyond.
When to Call Immediately
Severe toothache that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief
Knocked-out tooth (time is critical; call within 30 minutes)
A Las Vegas hospital ER can manage your pain with medication and antibiotics, but they cannot perform the actual dental treatment you need. Here is what that means for you.
The ER Cannot Fix Dental Problems
Emergency rooms do not have dental chairs, dental X-ray equipment, or dentists on staff. They will prescribe pain medication and antibiotics, send you home with a bill of $500 to $2,000, and tell you to see a dentist. The underlying problem remains untreated, and in many cases, the delay makes it worse.
Our AI-assisted radiology system analyzes your X-rays alongside Dr. Cohan’s expert eye, identifying fractures, infections, and pathology faster and more accurately than traditional methods alone. When minutes matter, technology makes the difference.
Sedation for Every Emergency
Dental emergencies are stressful enough without adding anxiety about the procedure itself. We offer sedation dentistry options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, for every emergency procedure. You will be comfortable from start to finish.

What to Do Before You Reach Our Office
Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root. Rinse it gently with water but do not scrub or remove any tissue. If possible, place the tooth back in the socket and hold it in place by biting on gauze. If that is not possible, keep the tooth in a cup of milk or your own saliva. Call us immediately. Time is critical: the best outcomes occur when the tooth is reimplanted within 30 to 60 minutes.
Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water). Take over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil) for pain and inflammation. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum tissue, as this can cause a chemical burn. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 20-minute intervals. Call +1(702) 341-9160 to schedule a same-day appointment.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Save any fragments of the tooth if possible. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply gauze with gentle pressure. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Cover any sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheeks. Call us right away for same-day repair.
Lost Filling or Crown
If a crown comes off, try to slip it back over the tooth using a small amount of denture adhesive or toothpaste to hold it temporarily. Do not use household glue. If a filling falls out, place a small piece of sugar-free gum in the cavity to protect the exposed tooth. Contact our office for a same-day crown replacement or filling repair.
“My husband cracked a tooth on a Saturday afternoon and was in terrible pain. We called Summerlin Dental Solutions and Dr. Cohan saw him within two hours. The staff was incredibly kind, the office was beautiful and calming, and Dr. Cohan fixed the tooth with a same-day crown using some kind of milling machine right there in the office. We could not believe the level of care. We have been loyal patients ever since.”

Call +1(702) 341-9160 immediately.
Q. Can a cracked tooth be saved?+
A. It depends on the severity of the crack. Using 3D CBCT imaging, Dr. Cohan can determine whether the crack extends into the root. Minor cracks can often be repaired with a porcelain crown. More severe vertical root fractures may require extraction followed by a dental implant. The key is to get an accurate diagnosis as quickly as possible, which is exactly what our advanced imaging provides.
Q. What if my emergency happens after hours or on a weekend?+
A. For established patients, Dr. Cohan provides after-hours triage and can prescribe medications to manage pain or infection until you can be seen in the office. For new patients experiencing a dental emergency after hours, call our main number at +1(702) 341-9160 and follow the prompts for emergency instructions. We will schedule you first thing the next business day.
Q. I broke a tooth on vacation in Las Vegas. Can you see visitors?+
A. Absolutely. We treat dental emergencies for visitors to Las Vegas as well as residents. Our new patient process is streamlined for emergency situations. We can provide same-day treatment and coordinate with your home dentist for any follow-up care needed after you return.
Q. How do I know if my toothache is a real emergency?
A. If the pain is severe and constant (not triggered only by hot/cold), if you have visible swelling in your face or gums, if you notice a pimple-like bump on your gum tissue, if you have a fever, or if the tooth is loose, these are signs of a genuine emergency that requires immediate attention. When in doubt, call us. Our team can help you determine the urgency over the phone.
Q. What makes your office different from urgent care dental clinics?+
A. Urgent care dental clinics typically see high volumes of patients in a fast-paced, assembly-line environment. At Summerlin Dental Solutions, you are the only patient in the building. Dr. Cohan, a 19-time award-winning dentist with 31+ years of experience, personally treats every case using AI diagnostics, 3D imaging, and CEREC same-day technology. The quality of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care is fundamentally different.
Q. I take blood thinners. Is emergency dental treatment safe for me?+
A. Yes, with proper coordination. Dr. Cohan routinely treats patients on anticoagulant medications such as Eliquis, Xarelto, and warfarin. She will review your medical history, adjust protocols as needed, and communicate with your physician when indicated to ensure your safety throughout the procedure.
Q. Can you replace a tooth that was knocked out and cannot be saved?+
A. Yes. If a tooth cannot be reimplanted, Dr. Cohan can plan a dental implant to permanently replace it. The implant looks, feels, and functions exactly like a natural tooth. In some cases, a temporary solution can be placed the same day while the implant site heals. For patients who have lost multiple teeth, All-on-4 full-arch restoration may be an option.
Q. How do I prevent dental emergencies in the future?+
A. Regular preventive care visits are the best defense. Dr. Cohan’s AI-assisted diagnostic system catches problems at the earliest stage, long before they become emergencies. Wear a custom mouthguard during sports. Address gum disease early. Do not chew ice, hard candy, or popcorn kernels. And if you grind your teeth at night, ask about a custom occlusal guard.
Q. How do I get started as a new patient?+
A. For an emergency, simply call +1(702) 341-9160 and tell us it is urgent. We will get you in as quickly as possible. For non-emergency new patients, you can request an appointment online or begin with a free virtual consultation from home.

Emergency Dental Care for Six Communities Across the Las Vegas Valley
When a dental emergency strikes, knowing where to go and how quickly you can get there matters. Summerlin Dental Solutions is centrally located at 851 S Rampart Blvd, Suite 230, in the heart of Summerlin between Tivoli Village, Boca Park, and Downtown Summerlin. Our office is easily accessible from the 215 Beltway and Summerlin Parkway, making us one of the most convenient emergency dental destinations in the western Las Vegas Valley.
The Summit
One of Summerlin’s most exclusive guard-gated communities, The Summit is approximately 10–12 minutes from our office via Town Center Drive and Rampart Boulevard. In a dental emergency — especially a knocked-out tooth where every minute counts — this proximity can be the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Summit residents trust Dr. Cohan for the same reason they chose their community: an uncompromising standard of excellence.
The Ridges
Nestled against Red Rock Canyon, The Ridges is a short drive from Summerlin Dental Solutions via Rampart Boulevard or the 215 Beltway. Ridges residents value having a dentist with 31 years of emergency experience, advanced 3D diagnostic imaging, and same-day treatment capability within minutes of home. Dr. Cohan’s sole-practitioner model ensures you see the same trusted dentist every time — including during an emergency.
Queensridge
Our closest neighboring community at just 5–10 minutes from our office. Queensridge families have trusted Dr. Cohan for over two decades, and many have our office number stored as their emergency dental contact. The combination of geographic proximity and clinical expertise makes Summerlin Dental Solutions the natural emergency dental home for Queensridge residents.
Henderson
Henderson, Green Valley, and Anthem patients reach our Summerlin office in approximately 25–30 minutes via the 215 Beltway. Henderson residents choose Summerlin Dental Solutions for emergencies because Dr. Cohan’s CBCT 3D imaging, AI-assisted diagnostics, and comprehensive on-site treatment capabilities mean the emergency is fully resolved in one visit rather than parceled out across multiple offices and appointments.
Centennial Hills
North Las Vegas and Centennial Hills residents travel south on the 215 or US-95 in about 20–25 minutes. This growing community has become an increasingly significant part of our emergency patient base, with families and professionals choosing us because of the speed of diagnosis, the breadth of same-day treatment options, and the genuine compassion of a team that treats emergency patients like people in distress, not interruptions to the schedule.
Spring Valley
Located just south of Summerlin along the 215 Beltway, Spring Valley patients reach our office in 10–15 minutes — making us one of the fastest emergency dental options for this densely populated community. Spring Valley residents frequently cite the combination of rapid access, advanced technology, and Dr. Cohan’s calm, experienced approach to emergency care as the reasons they choose Summerlin Dental Solutions when the unexpected happens.
Advanced Technology for Faster, More Accurate Emergency Diagnosis
In a dental emergency, the quality of the diagnosis determines the quality of the outcome. Summerlin Dental Solutions has invested in every meaningful advancement in dental technology to ensure that Dr. Cohan can identify the full extent of damage quickly, develop the right treatment plan, and execute it with precision — all in a single emergency visit whenever possible.
AI-Assisted Radiology
Our artificial intelligence system reviews emergency diagnostic images alongside Dr. Cohan in real time, highlighting fracture lines, infection spread, and bone involvement that might be subtle on traditional X-rays. In an emergency, where speed and accuracy are equally critical, this AI second opinion helps ensure nothing is missed in the initial assessment.
3D CBCT Scanner
The cone beam CT scanner produces a complete three-dimensional view of the affected area in seconds — revealing the exact depth and direction of a crack, the spread of an abscess, the position of a displaced tooth root, or the integrity of surrounding bone. This information is essential for determining whether a tooth can be saved and planning the most effective treatment approach.
TRIOS Digital Scanner
When an emergency requires a same-day crown, bridge, or restoration, the TRIOS digital scanner captures precise impressions in minutes without messy putty trays. This enables Dr. Cohan to begin the restoration process immediately rather than sending you home with a temporary fix while waiting weeks for a lab-fabricated restoration.
Soft Tissue Laser
For emergencies involving gum lacerations, soft tissue trauma, or infection, our dental laser provides minimally invasive treatment with less bleeding, less swelling, and faster healing than traditional surgical methods. The laser can also be used to drain abscesses and disinfect infected tissue with greater precision and comfort.
Digital X-Rays
Delivering instant diagnostic images at up to 90% less radiation than conventional film, digital X-rays are the first line of emergency assessment. Results appear on screen in seconds — not minutes — eliminating the processing delay that can feel like an eternity when you are in pain.
Dual-Screen Exam Rooms
Every treatment room features dual monitors that display your emergency images in real time. Even in a crisis, Dr. Cohan takes the time to show you what she sees and explain her recommended treatment, because understanding what has happened and why a particular course of action is necessary reduces fear and builds trust — two things that matter enormously when you are in the chair with a dental emergency.
Computerized Smile Design
For emergencies involving visible front teeth — a broken incisor, a lost veneer, trauma to the smile zone — smile design software helps Dr. Cohan plan a restoration that matches your existing teeth in shade, proportion, and contour. Even in an emergency, the aesthetic outcome matters, and this technology ensures your restored smile looks completely natural.
