THE DISADVANTAGES OF A DEEP CLEANING AT YOUR SUMMERLIN DENTAL OFFICE

February 5, 2022

THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF A DEEP CLEANING TEETH AT YOUR SUMMERLIN DENTAL OFFICE

DEEP-CLEANING-300x219

Dental hygiene can help avoid foul breath and gum disease. Therefore, it is critical to brush and floss regularly and to visit a dentist twice a year for basic tooth cleanings.

However, at Summerlin Dental Solutions your dentist may occasionally recommend a deep teeth cleaning. Bleeding gums, receding gums, and loose teeth are all indicators that you may require a comprehensive deep cleaning. While thorough cleaning — also known as periodontal scaling or root planing — is rather frequent, it does carry some concerns, however the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of deep cleaning teeth.

Here's everything you need to know about thorough cleaning teeth, including the drawbacks.

What is a deep cleaning of the teeth?

A deep teeth cleaning can eliminate plaque and tartar accumulation on your teeth, hence lowering gum inflammation and promoting gum health.

Plaque is a sticky coating that grows on the surface of the teeth. It is a bacterial infection that occurs when food particles and saliva interact. Brushing your teeth removes plaque, which accumulates on teeth on a daily basis.

Brushing, on the other hand, does not remove all plaque from between the teeth. Tartar is formed when leftover plaque calcifies or hardens.

Plaque or tartar buildup might result in gum disease. This includes gingivitis, or gum inflammation. Gingivitis can progress to periodontitis if left untreated. This is a severe illness that causes the bone that supports the teeth to deteriorate.

The benefits of extensive cleaning include:

-preventing gum disease and combating foul breath.

-protects tooth roots, supports healthy gums, and helps

reduce tooth loss

The disadvantages of extensive cleaning:

-Slight discomfort and sensitivity may result in gum recession

- in extremely rare situations, infection

What are the advantages of a thorough dental cleaning?

If gum disease causes your gums to move away from your teeth, creating a space bigger than 5 millimeters (mm) deep, you may require a deep cleaning.

If your gum disease continues to progress, the gap between your gums and teeth may continue to widen. This can result in weakened teeth-supporting bones, resulting in loose teeth or tooth loss.

If your dentist advises a deep cleaning, the following are some of the benefits:

-halting the progression of gum disease.

-addressing an active infection and promoting healing by

thoroughly cleaning your teeth above and below the gumline

-eradicating gum disease-related foul breath

-safeguarding your teeth's roots

What are the drawbacks to deep cleaning your teeth?

While deep cleaning can effectively treat gum disease, the process is not without dangers. Among the disadvantages of deep cleaning teeth are the following:

-does not ensure that your gums will reattach to your teeth;

- may cause your gums to recede

- infection is a possibility if you have a damaged immune

system

- discomfort and sensitivity

The most prevalent adverse effects are pain and sensitivity. The risks associated with deep cleaning are typically low and last approximately 5 to 7 days, though in severe situations, this may extend to a few weeks.

What is involved in deep cleaning teeth?

Deep tooth cleanings are not the same as ordinary dental cleanings. Cleaning above the gumline on a regular basis eliminates plaque and tartar. On the other hand, a thorough cleaning removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline.

Gum disease creates a space or gap between your teeth and gums, which can retain tartar and plaque. This accumulation is removed by cleaning below the gumline.

Deep cleaning entails scaling and root planing of the gums.

Deep cleanings typically require two or more visits and include scaling and root planing of the gums. Each visit may take between one and two hours.

Scaling is the process by which your dentist eliminates plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline. During the root planing procedure, your dentist eliminates plaque and tartar from the teeth's roots. This assists in narrowing the space between your teeth and gums, allowing your gums to reattach to the tooth.

You may require antibiotics.

If you have a weakened immune system, you may need to take an antibiotic for a few days. This is because there is a possibility of infection following the procedure. Additionally, extensive dental cleanings may occasionally result in the discharge of microorganisms into the bloodstream.

Is deep cleaning unpleasant?

Due to the discomfort associated with teeth scaling and root planing, you will get a topical or local anesthetic to numb your gums. At Summerlin Dental Solutions we are always concerned with your comfort. You can just let us know if anything bothers you and we will find a resolution

You should anticipate some sensitivity following your treatment. Your gums may swell, and you may experience slight bleeding as well that should resolve quickly.

How to minimize sensitivity following the procedure

Consuming soft foods (yogurt, applesauce, or mashed potatoes) for several days following your treatment may assist in reducing sensitivity. Additionally, you should avoid extremely hot or cold foods and beverages. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, as well as rinsing with warm salt water, can help relieve inflammation.

Regular brushing and flossing promote healing and help to prevent additional gum irritation. Brush your teeth at least twice daily using a soft bristle toothbrush and floss at least once daily.

How much does a dental deep cleaning cost?

Deep cleaning costs vary according to the severity of gum disease or inflammation.

You'll typically need two visits, while some individuals may require up to four to entirely remove tartar and plaque. Your mouth is divided into quadrants during these cleanings. You may pay $200 or more per quadrant, depending on your location and the extent of your therapy.

Most dental insurance policies cover extensive cleanings.

If you do not have dental insurance, please ask about our dental savers plan

IN SUMMARY

A thorough teeth cleaning aids in the elimination of foul breath and aids in the healing of gum disease. Because deep cleanings can carry some risk, it's critical to recognize any potential issues or side effects.

Although this is a routine and safe operation, you should anticipate some sensitivity and edema following the procedure. Consult your Summerlin dentist if swelling, bleeding, or pain persists for more than a week following your surgery.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO FIND THE BEST "DENTIST NEAR ME"?

SUMMERLIN DENTAL SOLUTIONS

LAS VEGAS

If you're looking for a new dentist in Summerlin, you've come to the right place. Perhaps you've recently relocated to the area, or perhaps it's been a while since you've had a checkup and you'd want to recommit to your dental health. We hope you will consider Summerlin Dental Solutions as a candidate for whatever reason you are looking for a new dental care provider. But don't come in just because we say so; take a look at these characteristics that a good "dentist near me" should possess, and then see how we stack up.

A Broad Range of Services

Some dentists specialize in a certain area. They've dedicated themselves to mastering only one or two parts of dentistry, making them ideal caregivers for those with special oral health requirements. Most people, on the other hand, discover that a dentist who provides a wide variety of treatments can provide them with high-quality care.

We provide the following services at your Summerlin Dental Solutions:

Preventive dentistry is the practice of avoiding dental problems before they occur. We safeguard your teeth from the ravages of ordinary life with cleanings, checkups, and other procedures.

Dentists that specialize in restorative dentistry. We can restore your smile if you have lost teeth or require a crown or filling.

Cosmetic dentistry is a kind of dentistry that focuses on appearance of your teeth. This has a significant influence on how people see you. We can help you appreciate what you see in the mirror, whether you seek a large or little smile makeover. At Summerlin Dental Solutions we let you decide how much of a makeover you are comfortable with.

The most important factor is a Compassionate Approach

Some dentists look after your teeth, but they may not look after you. The finest dentist is one who listens to your concerns and strives to make you as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment. The time that a dentist takes to listen to you and your concerns and then takes the time to explain to you all your options.

Dr Marianne Cohan at Summerlin Dental Solutions treats all of her patients with patience, kindness, and gentleness, and she expects the same from her office staff. If you'd like to meet our staff, stop by for a meet & greet or give us a call to set up an appointment.

Patient Education is Prioritized

Your dentist should always make an effort to explain your oral health to you. You're more likely to build a trusting connection with your dental care provider if you understand why certain things happen, what behaviors to avoid, and why certain procedures are performed.

We'll be pleased to answer any questions you have regarding your dental health when you visit our clinic. You may also visit our website at any time for information on a variety of issues, including as gum disease, fluoride, dental implants, and much more.

Finding the perfect "dentist near me" can be difficult, but we hope you will give us the chance to show you that we can give your smile the skilled, loving attention it deserves.

A new smile can make a huge difference in your life.

A beautiful smile has a significant impact on how you feel about yourself and how others see you. When you have cosmetic flaws in your smile, it not only makes you feel unpleasant, but it can also make you look so much older than you are. While many people are unhappy with their smile's appearance, many are unaware that cosmetic dentistry can correct the defects. Simple and effective cosmetic dentistry procedures can completely improve the appearance of your smile. Dr. Marianne Cohan, a leading cosmetic dentist in Summerlin, has the qualifications and reputation you need for a comprehensive smile makeover.

BENEFIT FROM A NEW SMILE THAT IS OUTSTANDING

A less-than-appealing smile has a bigger impact on your life than most people realize. Many people believe that a charming grin makes you appear younger, which is significant for how people perceive you on first impressions. For people who have struggled with self-confidence, making a good first impression is crucial. Not to mention, many people believe that having a beautiful smile affects one's employment prospects, as having a bad smile has been connected to limiting one's career alternatives.

While many people believe that cosmetic dentistry is exclusively for those who have major issues with their smile's appearance, this is not the case. Even the most basic operations, such as teeth whitening, has been shown to boost a person's confidence and how others see them.

"I'm a lot more confident now, something I didn't think was possible." I didn't notice it until recently, but I used to talk with my hands covering my lips instinctively. Even when things aren't humorous anymore, I attempt to laugh. I truly believe that Dr. Cohan has improved my life when I didn't even realize it needed it".  Said a recent makeover patients.

How Do I Treat Dry Mouth Causes in Summerlin Dental Office and Las Vegas?

How Do I Treat Dry Mouth Causes in Summerlin Dental Office and Las Vegas?

IMG_9930-DRY-MOUTH-300x267

What is dry xerostomia, and how does it affect you? Despite the fact that the average person has never heard of it, they have all dealt with it in one way or another. Basically, it's a euphemistic way of stating, "dry mouth." The inconvenience of having a dry mouth is something that everyone has experienced, but when the dryness persists, it becomes a very irritating problem. Dry mouth occurs when you do not have enough saliva to keep your mouth moist and lubricated, and your mouth becomes parched. Continue reading to learn about some of the causes of dry mouth, as well as some remedies for treating it.

What causes my mouth to be so dry, and how can I avoid it in the future?

If your mouth feels dry no matter what you do, your saliva glands aren't working properly. A variety of variables, including but not limited to the following, might contribute to this situation:

1: Stress or anxiousness are two terms that can be used to describe the same thing.

2: some medications

3: Chemotherapy or radiotherapy are both options.

4: Aging

5: Smoking

6: Sjorgren's syndrome is a kind of chronic fatigue syndrome (autoimmune illness)

Sjorgren’s Syndrome

Illness caused by an immune system reaction Sjorgren's syndrome is characterized by the presence of white blood cells that attack the salivary glands. The only way to deal with dry mouth is to attempt to treat the cause of the condition. Pay close attention to the causes outlined above and consult with your Summerlin dental office about your treatment choices.

Q: What causes dry mouth symptoms, and what are the signs and symptoms of dry mouth?

A: If you continue to have dry mouth, it is likely that your salivary glands are not producing enough saliva. Examine the following signs and symptoms of dry mouth so you'll be aware of what to look out for:

  1. Having difficulty chewing, swallowing, tasting, or speaking
  2. A sticky or drying sensation might be felt on the tongue and in the throat.
  3. It feels like your tongue is dry and harsh to the touch.
  4. You may have a burning feeling in your mouth.
  5. irritation of the gums
  6. Cracked lips are a problem.
  7. Tooth decay is a regular occurrence.
  8. Breathing difficulties

The following are the most common indications and symptoms to be on the lookout for. The earlier you recognize the signs and symptoms of dry mouth, the sooner you may begin treatment for the underlying condition that is causing them.

Q: What Can I Do to Relieve My Dry Mouth Problems?

A: If your prescription medication is causing you to have dry mouth, switching medications is a straightforward option. There are a variety of additional medications available that can aid your salivary glands in increasing their production of saliva. You may also take steps to lower your chances of experiencing dry mouth by doing the following:

  1. To be on the safe side, avoid caffeine at all costs.
  2. Keep your tongue wet when eating may be as easy as drinking enough of water or other sugar-free drinks throughout the meal.
  3. Sugarless gums should be chewed to enhance saliva flow.
  4. Tobacco and alcoholic beverages should be avoided at all costs.
  5. Avoid eating spicy or salty foods before bedtime, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
  6. Use a humidifier at night to keep the air moist.

Everyone has had dry mouth at some time in their lives, but don't let it interfere with your normal activities. Apply our causes, symptoms, and preventative recommendations to keep your mouth moist and healthy. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you should visit your dentist to determine what is causing the issue and how to resolve the situation.

Best Ways to Prevent Bad Breath

February 2, 2022
dental-womenshormones-300x199

There is nothing worse than having bad breath, and although it might be tough to determine if you have bad breath, it is always preferable to maintain excellent dental health rather than risk having a stinky mouth. When it comes to reducing or eliminating bad breath, there are several options available, some of which are far more effective and last longer than others. Take a look at the options available to you below.

Floss on a regular basis

Even though it might be tough to remember to floss on a daily basis, when it comes to bad breath, flossing is one of the simplest and most cost-effective methods to freshen your breath quickly and effectively. See, flossing helps to remove the plaque and germs that accumulate in parts of your mouth that a toothbrush can't reach, and it also helps to eliminate the odor connected with the bacteria. While flossing may not completely erase bad breath on its own, if done in conjunction with other good dental hygiene routines such as brushing, you may notice a noticeably fresher smelling mouth.

Mouthwash should be used.

Using a mouthwash may significantly improve the freshness of your breath, particularly if you notice that your breath is still smelling after brushing and flossing. There are many different mouthwash solutions available on the market; however, you may make your own by mixing baking soda with water and swishing it around in your mouth.

Always brush your teeth after sleeping.

When you get up in the morning, whether you've had a nap or a whole night of sleep, you'll likely want to clean your teeth in order to prevent bad breath. While you are asleep (even for a short period of time), bacteria builds in your mouth, which is ultimately the root of your foul breath, according to scientific evidence. So, the next time you wake up after a good night's sleep, give your mouth a thorough brushing and you will notice a significant improvement in the freshness of your breath.

There are a variety of options for freshening your breath that go beyond chewing gum or sucking on mints; the methods listed above are just a few suggestions for you to consider. Try them out and you'll most likely discover that your foul breath issue has been resolved, or at the very least much reduced. Naturally, you may always ask Dr. Marianne Cohan at your next appointment at our Summerlin dental office near you.

Ease up on your gums — don’t brush your teeth too hard!

January 26, 2022
ease-up-on-gums_68230868

Some dental customers approach their teeth with the same vigor as if they were polishing an old floor—that is, they work them much too hard! Too-hard brushing is perhaps the most frequent error patients make in their dental care regimen, and it may be harmful to the gums and teeth if not addressed immediately.

What kinds of problems can be caused by brushing too hard?

  • Gums that are receding
  • Bone loss in the area of the teeth
  • Teeth loss is a common occurrence.
  • Tooth sensitivity, particularly to extremes of heat and cold
  • Enamel that has become brittle

Overbrushing may cause your gums to recede and expose the neck of your teeth, which can cause pain and discomfort. Due to the fact that this portion of the tooth is not covered by hard enamel like the rest of the tooth, the soft inner layer, known as dentin, is exposed on this side. Dentin is very sensitive to heat and cold, and it is also significantly more prone to bacterial deterioration than other tissues. When the gums recede as a result of incorrect brushing, the condition is typically permanent.

Using the appropriate technique to clean your teeth

So you're already aware that you should wash your teeth twice a day, so why not do it correctly? First and foremost, unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Marianne Cohan, you should always brush using a soft bristled brush rather than a medium or hard bristled brush. In most cases, cleaning your teeth twice a day for two minutes is sufficient, unless you have braces or certain oral health conditions.

When you brush your teeth and gums, the primary goal is to eliminate plaque from your teeth and gums. Plaque is essentially a soft substance that is formed by the accumulation of germs, saliva, and food waste. It is not necessary to brush vigorously in order to eliminate plaque; instead, be sure to aim your toothbrush towards the gum line (where plaque tends to accumulate) and brush in tiny circular strokes, never in back and forth motions.

It's also a good idea to use a gentle touch while holding your toothbrush. People have a tendency to brush harder when they grip their toothbrush more tightly.

Are there any queries you still have concerning correct teeth brushing technique or gum health? Inquire with any member of our staff or Dr. Marianne Cohan on your next visit to our Las Vegas office near you; we'll be pleased to assist you!

Things You Should Know Before Getting an Oral Piercing

January 19, 2022
oral_piercing_xl_20807092

Is that anything you've been thinking about recently, having an oral piercing? Although they may seem attractive because they are fashionable or hip, it is important to be aware of the health hazards involved with oral piercing. Even if you already own one, you could learn something new about it.

Countless numbers of microorganisms live in the mouth of an adult person. In spite of the fact that individuals do not have piercings, it is not unusual for them to get an infection every now and then. By adding an oral piercing to your collection, you increase your chances of contracting an infection.

Having piercings causes many individuals to acquire the habit of touching them on a daily basis, which is equivalent to opening a door and saying, "Welcome home, infections!" In addition, since these piercings are located in your mouth, food particles from all of the food that passes through them might build and produce a significant health problem in the long run.

Because it is difficult to ignore the existence of an oral piercing, it is usual for people to bite or play with the site. Teeth fractures, on the other hand, might result from this practice. While a fracture may occur on the enamel of a tooth and be treated with a simple filling, it can also occur deeper in the tooth and necessitate the need for a root canal or even tooth extraction.

Other dangers include impaired speech and eating abilities, nerve damage, gum damage, and even a loss of taste as a result of the medication.

If you're still set on getting an oral piercing, at the very least be informed of the amount of time it will take to recover. In most cases, it takes between four and six weeks and causes significant pain at that period. Be prepared to give it that amount of time in order to reduce your chances of contracting an illness.

Information About Oral Piercings in Summerlin, NV

Make sure you realize that obtaining an oral piercing will need you to take on additional responsibilities in addition to your regular dental hygiene responsibilities. The need of frequent care on your end, not only during the healing process, cannot be overstated. Summerlin Dental Solutions can help give your teeth the extra care they need.

Teeth Protection and Winter Sports from Summerlin Dental Solutions

January 5, 2022
winter_sports

At Summerlin Dental Solutions, just because it’s cold out there doesn’t mean you’ll give up keeping fit and active! Winter is the season for some of our favorite team sporting activities, and when you’re donning your protective gear, don’t forget to protect your teeth as well.

  • Basketball

This sport actually tallies one of the highest counts of dental injuries. Running, jumping, and diving for the ball on an unforgiving court can lead to tooth and jaw injuries.  And for every ten men on the floor, it seems like there at least 50 flailing elbows in the paint.

  • Hockey

Notorious for the toll it takes on teeth, hockey is a game of sticks, ice, and whizzing pucks. And when your sport’s penalties include the terms hooking, slashing, and tripping, the more protection, the better.

  • Skiing

When you are flying down the slopes, combining powdery snow and speed, mouth protection is a good idea. This also applies to snowboarding and other snow sports.

  • Wrestling

Grappling and pinning in close quarters can lead to unintended injuries after accidental contact with the mat or your opponent.

Different uniforms, different equipment, and different playing fields, but all these sports have one thing in common—the easiest way to protect your teeth while playing them is with a mouth guard.

Mouthguards generally come in three forms:

  • Over the counter, ready-made appliances. These are available in drugstores and sporting goods stores, but might not be a comfortable fit as they are pre-formed sizes.
  • The “boil-and-bite” option is a mouthguard form placed in hot water. You then bite down to shape it to your mouth and teeth.
  • Custom mouthguards can be fabricated just for you through our Las Vegas office. These appliances are designed to fit your individual mouth and teeth, so provide a better fit and better protection. They are also usually more durable and more comfortable. If you wear braces, you definitely need a custom mouthguard to prevent an injury to your mouth or braces caused by an ill-fitting appliance.

Whether you play on a team or pursue individual athletic activities, keeping safe as you keep fit is your first priority. We would be happy to discuss your mouthguard options for any sport, any time of year.

Resolve to Eat Better in the New Year

December 29, 2021
better

Hello there from Summerlin Dental Solutions It’s a new year, and a resolution found on many lists is learning to be more mindful about healthy food choices. You might have set some of these goals yourself. Gaining, losing, or maintaining your current weight. More fruits and veggies. Better proteins. Less sugar. Fewer carbs. You want to make this new year your healthiest year yet.

And while you’re making your new and improved shopping list, don’t forget your oral health! Because while brushing and flossing are extremely important, your diet can also have very real benefits for your teeth and gums.

Stronger Teeth and Jaws

We often talk about teeth and bones together, and that’s natural. Calcium and phosphorus, as well as other minerals, make them the strongest parts of our bodies. When teeth lose mineral strength, they are more vulnerable to cavities, and bone loss in the jaw can cause loose or even lost teeth.

Making sure you get the recommended daily amount of the minerals and vitamins you need will help sustain and repair both teeth and bones. A diet rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D helps build strong bones and promotes bone density. While your teeth can’t create new enamel, minerals that are eroded by acids from plaque and acidic foods can be restored, or remineralized, with the calcium and phosphates in saliva.

  • Calcium

Strong teeth and bones need calcium. More than 99% of the calcium in our bodies is located in our teeth and bones. How to make sure we get enough?

Dairy products are the traditional answer. Several servings of milk, cheese, or yogurt each day supply most of our needs. If you can’t eat dairy, though, calcium is also found in other foods, such as salmon, sardines, many dark leafy vegetables, and fortified juices, tofu, and cereals.

  • Phosphorus

Calcium gets most of the attention when it comes to creating strong teeth and bones, but it’s not a solo act. We need phosphorus to make full use of the calcium in our diets.

Proteins like meat, fish, and poultry are good sources of phosphorus, as are beans, nuts, whole grains and dairy.

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a diet essential because it enables us to absorb the calcium and phosphorus that keep teeth and bones strong.

Most dairy and many other foods are fortified with vitamin D, such as cow’s milk, soymilk, orange juice, and cereals. Egg yolks and fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and herring, are also a rich natural source of the vitamin.

Healthy Gums

Gum disease is more than just a nuisance. Left untreated, gingivitis (early gum disease) can become periodontitis (serious gum disease). Periodontitis can cause infection, loose teeth, and tooth and bone loss.

Brushing and flossing promote gum health and help prevent gum disease, but your diet plays an important role, too.

  • Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for the health and healing of mucous membranes, including gum tissue and the soft membranes in the mouth.

You can get this vitamin directly from animal products such as dairy foods and meats, or it can be formed in the body from beta-carotenes. Think orange when you hit the produce aisle, because foods such as carrots, peppers, pumpkin, squash, and sweet potatoes are a rich source of beta-carotenes.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the so-called “essential nutrients.” These are the nutrients that are necessary for our bodies to function properly, and which can only be supplied in our diets. Vitamin C is vital for healthy gums and soft tissue—in fact, one sign that your diet is deficient in vitamin C is inflamed and bleeding gums.

Citrus fruits, those oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and all their cousins, are a wonderful source of vitamin C, but you have many other flavorful options. Fruits such as kiwis, mangos, papayas, and strawberries are rich in vitamin C. Step over to the vegetable aisle to load up on red peppers, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli—all of which contain more vitamin C per serving than a medium orange!

Fewer Cavities

Plaque thrives on a diet of sugar. Oral bacteria in plaque use the sugars in our food to produce acids. These acids erode enamel and eventually lead to cavities. Limiting your sugar consumption and choosing complex carbohydrates over simple carbs are two ways to reduce your risk of cavities.

  • Sugars

The usual suspects—candies, desserts, pastries, sodas—are sugar-filled items you’re familiar with. What might surprise you is the amount of sugar in sports drinks, fruit juices, flavored yogurts, breakfast cereals, and other standard grocery purchases. Checking labels for sugar content is a great way to cut down on unexpected sweeteners.

  • Carbs

The refined starches in white bread, white rice, potato chips, and other simpler carbohydrates quickly break down into sugars. This is the kind of nutrition only plaque appreciates.

Instead, fill your cart with complex carbohydrates, which contain important vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Found in foods like whole-grain breads and cereals, legumes, and many vegetables, complex carbs break down slowly for longer-lasting energy.

Of course, these suggestions don’t cover everything on your healthy dental shopping list. We could add magnesium for bone density, vitamin B to prevent oral irritation and inflammation, vitamin K for bone strength, and more. To find out the best options for your healthiest smile, talk to Dr. Marianne Cohan or a member of our Las Vegas team about ideas for improving your daily diet.

Better Options

Because besides leading to stronger teeth, healthier gums, and fewer cavities, a careful and conscious approach to your food choices has another wonderful benefit—a healthy dental diet is healthy for the rest of your body as well. Just something to be mindful of as we greet the new year!

Dental Veneers at Summerlin Dental Solutions

December 22, 2021
dental_veneers

If you want to fix staining, large gaps, fillings, chipped teeth, or the overall shape of your teeth, veneers may be the perfect option for you. Many of our patients opted for veneers and have never been more confident in their smile!

Dental veneers are made from long-lasting porcelain materials which cover the front and biting ends of each tooth. At your appointment, you can choose the shade of veneers to brighten up your smile. They are usually placed on the anterior, or front teeth, where the chewing forces are not as hard as in the back. Placing the veneers is easy, and the best part is: It requires only two appointments!

During the first appointment, we’ll take an impressions of your teeth. Then we send them to the lab to make your veneers. Veneers are fairly conservative in preparation because they require a small amount of space to be created on the front, bottom, and sides of each tooth for a natural appearance. You will leave the office with temporary veneers in place for a week or two while the permanent veneers are being made.

Your veneers will be placed during the second appointment, and you won’t believe the difference in your smile! If you’re interested in learning more, give Dr. Marianne Cohan a call at our Summerlin Dental office today!

How to Fix Gum Recession at Summerlin Dental Solutions

December 15, 2021
Amazing-smile-15-1-300x211

Do you have gum recession? Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed that your teeth looked longer? Does it seem like your gums are shrinking? This condition is called recession—many adults have it. Let’s look at some of the causes and what you can do about it.

During your exam at Summerlin Dental Solutions, we will take measurements to check for periodontal disease. Dental professionals take recession measurements to see how much attached gingiva is present. This is the kind of tissue that is most resilient to infection.

The more recession, the less attached gingiva. The less attached gingiva, the less bone support. The less bone support, the higher your chances of tooth loss. It is quite a domino effect.

Don’t lose hope. The effect can be halted once you know the cause of your recession.

Do you ever wake up with your jaw clenched, and/or a headache that originates just above your ears? Clenching or grinding your teeth can cause recession. When there is added stress on a tooth, it flexes at the gum line.

Over time this causes microscopic breaks in the enamel and then a notch appears. The gum line is forced to move away from its original position. If this is something you see in your mouth, we can discuss the possibility of an occlusal guard at your next visit.

receding gums

How do you brush your teeth? Do you brush in a straight line or circles? What kind of bristles do you use? Are the bristles on your toothbrush frayed?

When you brush in a circle, you are sweeping all along the gum line, removing the plaque from most angles. When you brush in a straight line, you may often miss the concave portion of the gums. This leaves plaque behind and leads to gingivitis. Whenever gingivitis occurs, the body attacks supporting structures like bone while trying to get rid of the infection. This is periodontal disease, which can cause recession.

Why are My gums Receding in Summerlin, NV

Recession may also result from an irritant on the gums, such as a bar from a partial denture or orthodontic appliance (braces).

Gums do not “grow back.” The most common treatment for advanced recession is a tissue graft. There are many different kinds of tissue grafts.

Other factors can cause recession. If you think recession is happening in your mouth, schedule an appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan to discuss your options, so you can make the appropriate treatment choice.

The Amazing Intraoral Cameras at Summerlin Dental Solutions

December 8, 2021
dental-womenshormones

Intraoral cameras. One of the greatest features our team at Summerlin Dental Solutions offers is the ability to see first-hand how we can help our patients. While X-rays help us detect any problems in your mouth and give us valuable information on what is bothering you, they often don’t give Dr. Marianne Cohan a complete view of everything that is going on inside your mouth. With the use of an intraoral camera, we can see every aspect of your teeth and mouth with incredible detail, uncovering cracked or fractured teeth, excessive wear, carious lesions, cavities, or other issues that may be hidden. We take those hi resolution images and put them on a 55 inch screen so you can see exactly what we see in your mouth. When we can discover oral problems early on, your treatment is much less invasive and often saves you money down the road.

An intraoral camera allows Dr. Marianne Cohan to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth, and gums and allows us to make an accurate diagnosis.  With clear, defined, enlarged images, Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team see details that standard mirror examinations may miss. It’s much easier to understand what is happening in your mouth if you can see the problem on a computer monitor, and it means faster diagnosis and less chair-time for our patients!

intraoral cmera

Intraoral cameras are small, about the size of a dental mirror, and emit a light onto the tooth. The tooth will emit a color that lets Dr. Marianne Cohan determine if the tooth is healthy or diseased. Intraoral cameras also allow us to save your images on our office computer to provide a permanent record of treatments. These treatments can be printed for you, other specialists, and your lab or insurance companies.

For any questions about the intraoral camera, we encourage you to ask Dr. Marianne Cohan or our team during your or your child’s next visit or by giving us a call at our convenient Summerlin Dental office.

‘Tis the Season—for Healthy Dental Choices!

December 1, 2021
dental

If you're racing through the snow to get to an emergency dental appointment, it's hard to be cheerful and healthy at this time of the year. And after a long holiday season, no one wants to begin their New Year's Resolutions with the words "Get Cavities Filled." How do you get through the most delicious of seasons with your enamel and fillings intact?

Normal people might consider candies and sweets to be bad, but we're not Scrooges around here! It's natural to want to indulge in a few treats over the holiday season, and we have some suggestions on how to do so guilt-free. But first and foremost, certain sweets are unquestionably more wicked than sweet. Which ones are more appropriate for use as table decorations rather than desserts?

  • Candies (candy canes)

If you've ever had a chipped or broken tooth as a result of inadvertently biting down on a piece of candy that was much harder than you anticipated, you know that extreme care should be used. We take our time with candy canes, allowing them to melt gently in our mouths as a result of this tendency. The disadvantage of this method, of course, is that we are now progressively bathing our teeth in sugar, which encourages the formation of plaque and cavity-causing germs.

Crushable sweets such as candy canes, peppermints, and other hard candies are possibly harmful to your teeth when you chew them, and they are certainly harmful if you allow them to dissolve slowly in your mouth.

  • Gumdrops

Gumdrops that are glistening and vibrant in color. They are one of the most adorable ways to decorate for the holidays, whether they are used to roof a gingerbread home, trim a gumdrop tree, or just sitting in a bowl. And when we say "sweet," we mean it in the literal sense of the word. The majority of gumdrops are composed mostly of corn syrup and sugar, which are then rolled in more sugar.

However, the fact that they are high in sugar is not the only issue. A sticky substance that adheres between our teeth and around our gums, this is sugar in an extra-gummy form.

  • Toffees, caramels, and taffy are all examples of sweets.

Despite the fact that they are packaged in attractive ribboned boxes, these incredibly sticky meals are not a treat for your teeth.

Chewy sweets not only attach to enamel, but they also stick to fillings, crowns (especially temporary crowns), orthodontic wires, and brackets. They are particularly bad for fillings. The last thing anybody wants is an unplanned dental or orthodontic appointment because their dental work has been damaged or displaced!

  • Houses made of gingerbread

No Christmas decoration is more festive than a gingerbread house, which is made of chewy, sticky gingerbread and topped with hard sugar frosting, candy canes, and peppermints. Wonderful for your home's interior design, but not so great for your oral health. If you're in the mood for something hot, eat one gingerbread guy and leave your architectural masterpiece alone.

dental
  • Fruitcake

If you're looking for a reason to say no to fruitcake, here's a good one: most fruitcake is bad for your teeth. Candied fruit is, well, candied, while dried fruit is sweet, sticky, and chewy in texture and consistency. Of course, there are delectable outliers, but even a delectable fruitcake has a significant amount of sugar.

This wasn't a very cheerful list, to put it mildly. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your sweets in the healthiest manner possible as a small Christmas present from me to you.

  • Make your selections carefully.

Take the time to choose the best holiday treats for yourself, just as you would while shopping for the perfect gifts for your family and friends. If you are concerned about cavities, have a temporary crown, wear braces, have broken a tooth in the past, or are just generally concerned about your oral health, avoid sticky, hard, and highly sweet desserts as much as possible.

When it comes to your holiday hosts, what can you take with a thankful (and relieved) smile? If you make it dark chocolate, you'll really obtain nutritional benefits such as magnesium and antioxidants, which should alleviate any concerns about eating soft chocolate on occasion. Cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and pies are all created with a lot of sugar, but hey, it is the holiday season, so why not indulge? Just make sure to follow our next few suggestions to avoid feeling guilty about that slice of cheesecake.

  • Sweets should be consumed with a meal.

Saliva has a purpose other than just keeping our mouths from becoming dry. It also aids in the prevention of cavities by washing away food particles and neutralizing the acids produced by food and bacteria, both of which are known to cause enamel damage.

If you eat dessert with your dinner, you will benefit from increased saliva production throughout the meal. As a result of frequent snacking throughout the day, this acid-neutralizing capacity is significantly diminished.

  • After you've finished eating, rinse your mouth with water.

After a meal or snack, particularly a sweet one, rinsing your mouth with water helps wash away the sticky sugars and carbohydrates, which oral bacteria turn into acids.

  • Brush your teeth as soon as possible. (Maybe.)

Brushing your teeth immediately after eating is always a good idea—well, nearly usually. For example, if you've been eating acidic foods such as citrus or colas, the acids in the meal may have weakened your enamel just enough to cause some possible enamel damage if you scour your teeth just after eating it. We often suggest waiting around 30 minutes before brushing to provide your enamel a chance to recuperate.

Every mouth, on the other hand, is unique. In the event that you have braces, if you have a tendency to have food trapped between your teeth or in your dental work, or if you have any other concerns, consult Dr. Marianne Cohan about the optimum times and techniques for holiday brushing.

Thanksgiving in North America

November 24, 2021
Smiling-older-60-300x225

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, which is usually a joyous time filled with eating, indulging, and spending time with family and friends, among other activities. Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to giving gratitude, and although it may seem like such a natural celebration, the United States is just one of a few of nations that recognizes it as a national holiday in their own countries.

Because Thanksgiving is a secular holiday, as opposed to many other holidays, it is observed on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States of America. As a matter of fact, it is observed on the second Monday of October in Canada, which is, strangely enough, considerably closer to the time of year when crops were most likely being harvested. In addition to the differences in dates, the origins of the event have also been traced back to various periods of time.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States.

Giving gratitude for a bountiful harvest is not a new tradition, but the origins of the modern-day Thanksgiving holiday in the United States may be traced back to a ceremony in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. This feast of thanksgiving was prompted by a bountiful harvest, and the tradition was simply carried on from generation to generation. At first, the colony at Plymouth did not have enough food to serve everyone in attendance, but the Native Americans assisted them by supplying seeds and teaching them how to fish, and they were soon able to host a feast worthy of the name of the colony. After a while, the custom spread, and by the 1660s, much of New England was celebrating the harvest with a feast in appreciation of the bounty.

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on November 23rd.

Martin Frobisher, an early Canadian explorer, is credited with establishing the first Thanksgiving celebration in the country. He survived the arduous journey from England through harsh weather conditions and rough terrain, and after his final voyage from Europe to present-day Nunavut, he held a formal ceremony to express his gratitude for his survival and good fortune. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1922. A feast was added to the festivities as time progressed and more settlers arrived, and the event rapidly became an annual event. Similarly, Samuel de Champlain is credited with the first official Thanksgiving celebration in appreciation of a good harvest; settlers who came with him in New France celebrated the harvest with a merry feast.

Thanksgiving in the Twenty-First Century

Thanksgiving is typically celebrated with the finest of Americana, as is customary today. Thanksgiving means roasted turkey, pumpkin pie, and green bean casserole, among other things, as well as feasts and football games, as well as getting ready for the start of the Christmas shopping season. No matter how you choose to commemorate this historic day, take a time to express gratitude for your friends, family, and all the blessings you have been blessed with. Summerlin Dental Solutions wishes you a happy Thanksgiving!

Tooth Sensitivity Treatments at Summerlin Dental Solutions

November 17, 2021

Girl-with-tooth-300x231

Dentine hypersensitivity (tooth sensitivity) can be described as a sharp and sudden pain caused by cold food and beverages. It’s present in more than half the population and result from receding gums that expose the root surfaces of your teeth.

That being said, hypersensitivity can be triggered by forceful tooth brushing, teeth whitening products, gum disease, and erosion from acid reflux, bulimia, or highly acidic foods. Symptoms can range from moderate to severe, depending on the cause and how quickly it’s treated.

Tooth sensitivity begins when the dentin develops some exposure. This layer that surrounds the nerve of the tooth is usually covered by gum tissue, but when recession takes place, the dentin can get exposed and the pain begins. The dentin contains numerous pores that run from the surface of the tooth inward. This direct connection to the nerve and blood supply of the tooth can be affected by external stimuli, such as the triggers cited above.

The good news is there are several different ways to treat dentinal hypersensitivity at Summerlin Dental Solutions.

Treatment of dentin tooth sensitivity begins by making an appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan. We encourage you to begin treatment sooner rather than later in order to figure out the cause and to reduce the pain you’re experiencing. In most cases, quick treatment options will solve the problem, including the use of desensitizing toothpaste, switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush, starting a daily fluoride rinse treatment, or minimizing teeth grinding with the help of a custom mouthguard.

For more serious cases, we may recommend you get crowns put on problematic teeth, start a gel or varnish fluoride treatment, or even schedule a surgical gum graft or root canal, depending on the cause and severity of your pain.

If you’re concerned about any tooth sensitivity you’re experiencing, please give our Las Vegas office a call and schedule an appointment. Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team want to help you identify the cause of your pain, and give you the best possible treatment plan. We look forward to seeing you to help alleviate discomfort and solve your tooth sensitivity.

Teeth Whitening and Your Smile at Summerlin Dental Solutions

November 10, 2021
teeth_whitening_smile-300x212

The best type of teeth whitening for your smile depends on what you are hoping to accomplish.

Whitening Toothpastes

This is certainly the easiest method of whitening, but will brushing alone produce your whitest smile? Probably not. Whitening toothpastes use chemicals and abrasives to remove some surface stains caused by foods, beverages and smoking. They can also be used to maintain the appearance of your teeth after a professional whitening. However, toothpaste alone cannot change the natural color of your teeth or penetrate the surface of the tooth to remove deeper stains. A whitening toothpaste usually takes several weeks to produce results. Be sure to choose a product with a seal of approval from a reputable dental association and carefully follow the instructions for use.

Whitening Strips and Gel Trays

Whitening gels can be applied at home with strips or tray kits. These peroxide-based gels are stronger than the formulas used in toothpaste.

Strips come coated with the whitening gel and work when pressed to your teeth for a specified amount of time. One difficulty here is making sure each tooth is completely covered by the strip so that even whitening takes place. Tray and gel whitening systems provide a mouthguard-like appliance that is filled with whitening gel and applied to your teeth, again for a specific period of time. Because one size does not fit all, stock trays can be ill fitting and lead to problems with gums and soft tissue. You can talk to our team about a custom-fitted appliance and whether gel whitening is your best option.

Some users find gel products cause tooth and gum sensitivity and even enamel damage. These over-the-counter gel products will not work on caps, veneers, crowns, or bridges, and there might be underlying conditions in your natural teeth that will make the use of these products ineffective. Please talk to us at your next visit to our Las Vegas office if you are interested in whitening at home, so we can advise you on how to achieve the best and safest outcome.

Professional whitening makes use of a gel with a higher concentration of peroxide and should only be provided by Dr. Marianne Cohan or a member of our team at our Las Vegas office. This process is generally faster, more effective and longer lasting. We take care first to examine your teeth for pre-existing conditions such as cavities and gum disease that could cause problems. We protect your gums when the gel is applied in office and monitor the procedure. We can assess the progress of the whitening and suggest further treatment if needed. Custom mouthpieces can also be an option if you would like to use a whitening gel at home. A personally molded tray will fit your teeth perfectly and allow a more precise application of the peroxide gel.

Some teeth are not good candidates for normal whitening procedures at home or in office. If you have dark stains caused by trauma, drugs such as tetracycline, discoloration due to root canals, or darker dental bonding, crowns, or other prosthetics, please talk to us about other possible solutions. We want to help you achieve your brightest possible smile.

Top Reasons People Choose Veneers at Your Summerlin Dental Office

Top Reasons People Choose Veneers at Your Summerlin Dental Office

top-reasons-veneers

Dental veneers are a way to correct and transform your smile by using very thin shells of porcelain or ceramic material and bonding them to the front of your teeth. They are strong and durable, look and feel like natural teeth, and improve your smile immediately. Here are some of the top reasons to consider getting dental veneers.

They Correct Multiple Cosmetic Issues

Dental veneers can help with cosmetic and dental health issues, and treat multiple problems at once. Some common reasons that individuals choose veneers is to close gaps and spaces between the teeth, fix alignment issues, change the overall shape and appearance of a tooth, whiten a smile by covering stained or discolored teeth, and cover chipped or cracked teeth.

If you have teeth that are already worn down and weakened, veneers help prevent further damage by covering them with a thin, tooth-colored shell.

Durability

Dental veneers are also extremely durable. They last several years longer than traditional composite fillings. You’ll have peace of mind when you choose veneers, knowing that you’ll have your new smile for many years. On average, dental veneers last about ten to 15 years. Just like your natural teeth, when you take good care of your veneers, they last longer.

Easy to Clean and Maintain

Keeping your veneers healthy and white is easy: You simply brush and floss them the way you do all of your teeth. Shortly after having your veneers installed, you’ll begin to think of them as your natural teeth because the thin shells lie right on top of your existing teeth. This makes it easy to floss and brush the way you normally would and keep them as clean as possible.

The Process is Simple

Getting dental veneers is a quick and easy process. You have a few short visits at Summerlin Dental Solutions and see results. On average, it only takes about four weeks from your first appointment to your last to complete the veneer process.

If you are considering getting dental veneers, schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan to find out exactly how they can benefit you.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month: An oral health routine

October 6, 2021
hygiene

Oral Hygiene is very important to your overall health. Adults are no strangers to feeling like there is never enough time in the day to get everything done. Your alarm clock rings and within minutes you ping pong around trying to spread peanut butter on sandwiches, answer your cell phone, remove the dog hair from your clothes, and make sure your child has completed his or her science fair project. Brushing your teeth can easily fall to the wayside. That is why our office promotes a simple, daily oral health regimen that you can easily incorporate into your busy lifestyle.

The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA), in partnership with the Wrigley Jr. Company, is celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM) during October. The ADHA encourages people to "Brush. Floss. Rinse. Chew...Keep it Clean, Keep it Healthy!" and offers some great tips for a quick and effective home oral health routine, below:

Oral Hygiene Health Routine at Home
  • Brushing your teeth twice daily is the most important thing you can do to diminish the accumulation of plaque and the potential for other oral problems such as cavities and gingivitis.
  • Flossing once daily removes plaque and food from beneath the gums and between teeth that brushing alone cannot remove. Tooth decay and gum disease often begin in these areas.
  • Rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial, non-alcohol based mouthwash kills plaque and gingivitis germs that brushing and flossing do not catch. We recommend using a mouthwash with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum helps produce saliva, which battles cavities. The gum also neutralizes plaque, strengthens enamel, and removes remaining food. It is especially important to chew gum after eating or drinking.
floss

It's easy to put the toothbrush down in order to take care of matters you feel are more urgent, but remember, a good oral health routine at home is the best way to prevent periodontal disease. "Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. An estimated 75 percent of Americans reportedly have some form of periodontal disease," said the ADHA. Periodontal disease also is linked to more serious illnesses such as diabetes and stroke.

Also, remember to keep regular visits with our office. Dr. Marianne Cohan can help you learn more about proper care for your teeth and gums.

Dental X-Rays: Are They Safe At Your Summerlin Dental Office?

Dental X-Rays: Are They Safe At Your Summerlin Dental Office?

dental_x_rays_xl_84631772

X-rays have been a function of dental healthcare for a long time. That in and of itself should be good news, because it means we've had plenty of time to improve them. While there is always some risk in exposure to radiation, dental X-ray exposure has decreased significantly due to all the advances in technology. So there’s risk, but X-rays are quite safe.

Think of X-rays as you would about a car. Automobiles these days have all kinds of technology to make them as safe as possible. There's still a chance that you’ll suffer an accident. Would you stop using a car because of that risk? When it comes to dental X-rays, Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team believe the positives clearly outweigh the negatives.

X-rays can be done digitally or with film. For film, X-rays require different exposures at different speeds to produce the image. Digital X-rays have software that automatically adjusts the exposure and produces the X-ray in a digital file. Since they substantially reduce your exposure to radiation, digital X-rays are the current standard in dental offices.

In addition to digital X-rays, lead aprons are an essential piece of X-ray safety. They help protect internal organs from X-rays by acting as a shield. They usually come with a thyroid collar as well, since that is one of the most vulnerable areas to X-rays in the body. Lead aprons can absorb up to 95% of any scatter rays that result from an X-ray. Not bad, right?

Although dental X-rays involve some radiation exposure (not all of it can be eliminated), so does everyday life. Getting too much sun, for example, can be dangerous. The truth is, we accumulate radiation in our bodies over a lifetime, so it’s worthwhile to be aware and avoid as much unnecessary exposure as possible. When it comes to your dental health, though, getting an X-ray — especially when your doctor says you need it — offers more benefits than risks.

Ask us about the type of dental X-rays we use during your next visit to our Las Vegas office!

Which is Better For Teeth: Diet Soda vs. Regular Soda

September 22, 2021
diet-soda_53443669

Diet Coke will be healthier for your teeth if you avoid the bacteria-feeding sugar found in normal soda, according to Dr. Marianne Cohan. That seems to be rational, doesn't it? There's a little more to it than that, to be honest. Consider the following: any kind of soda may have a negative impact on your oral hygiene.

Diet soda: Why it may cause teeth to decay as well as other health problems

The acidity of these beverages is the primary factor in the development of tooth decay. Typically, diet sodas and other sugar-free beverages are rich in acidity, which weakens the enamel on your teeth and makes them more vulnerable to cavities and tooth erosion. Sugar-free beverages often contain significant levels of phosphoric acid, citric acid, and/or tartaric acid, thus it's recommended to avoid them if at all possible.

Some patients also appreciate drinking orange juice or other citrus liquids, according to their preferences. These beverages are rich in citric acid and have the same impact on the enamel of your teeth as sodas and other acidic beverages.

What about normal soda, you ask?

teeth

We all know that the acidity of diet sodas and sugar-free beverages leads to tooth disease, but what about ordinary soda? Does it have the same effect? In addition to the sugar content (a 12-ounce can of soda has around 10 teaspoons of sugar), ordinary soda also includes carbohydrates, which feed the decay-causing bacteria found in the mouth. This includes sports drinks and energy drinks, which are both high in acidity and high in sugar content, as well as other beverages. As a result, these beverages offer a double punch of sugar and acidity that your teeth and body do not need.

When you drink soda throughout the day, the issues created by both diet and normal soda are amplified. It's better to drink it all in one sitting so that you don't have to worry about cleaning sugar and/or acids off your teeth throughout the day and so that your saliva has a chance to balance the pH in your mouth.

What are the greatest drinks to consume and how should they be consumed

Making a conscious effort to consume liquids that are low in acid is an excellent strategy for maintaining healthy teeth and enamel. Root beer, plain water, black tea, and coffee are the healthiest options, according to research done by Matthew M. Rodgers and J. Anthony von Fraunhofer at the University of Michigan. If you must drink a soda, plain water, black tea, and coffee are the best options. When measured 14 days after the beverage was consumed, these beverages dissolved the least amount of enamel in the test tube.

For those who still prefer to consume soda, diet soda, sugar-free beverages, or juices, here are some additional recommendations to help you avoid tooth decay:

  • Drinking soda or acidic liquids using a straw can help to reduce contact between your teeth and the acid.
  • Immediately after consuming the beverage, flush the mouth with plenty of water.
  • You should refrain from brushing your teeth between 30 minutes and an hour after consuming the beverage since doing so has been demonstrated to distribute the acids before you saliva can restore the pH to a neutral state in your mouth.
  • Drinks with acids stated on the ingredient label should be avoided at all costs.

Do you have any more questions concerning soda, sugar, or acid? Give our Las Vegas office near you, Summerlin Dental Solutions, a call and we'll be more than pleased to assist you.

Can Dental Veneers at Summerlin Dental Solutions Improve my Smile?

Dental Veneers in Summerlin, NV

Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team at Summerlin Dental Solutions know your smile is an important part of your appearance; it can be a source of pride or embarrassment. Everyone deserves beautiful, straight teeth that complement their features, but few are born with natural dental perfection. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in recent years, with veneers making it possible to make over your smile completely.

With dental veneers, the smile of your dreams can become a reality. These thin, wafer-like shells are crafted of porcelain and completely customized to fit your smile. Once your tooth size, shape, and color have been determined, veneers are adhered to the surface of your natural tooth, instantly transforming your appearance. What used to be a secret of the rich and famous is now highly accessible to dental patients around the world.

Benefits of dental veneers

Appearance

Dental veneers are very natural in appearance and virtually undetectable to other people. Their non-porous surfaces make them resistant to staining, which ensures they do not change color over time.

Improvements

veneers

Dental veneers can be used to improve the appearance of many kinds of imperfections. In fact, an entirely new smile can be crafted from veneers, to cover up chipped teeth, discoloration, and gaps between teeth.

Durability

Veneers are long-lasting cosmetic enhancements that can survive many years with appropriate care and maintenance. They are specially fabricated to be resistant to scratches and chipping, which makes them a practical solution for the average person.

Flexibility

Dental veneers are highly adaptable. You can opt for only a single veneer to repair a chipped or cracked tooth, or you can modify multiple teeth at once for a smile makeover.

Considerations

Keep in mind that cosmetic treatments like dental veneers are secondary to primary dental care. You must have healthy teeth and disease-free gums to be a candidate for cosmetic procedures. An initial consultation at our convenient Las Vegas office will reveal any underlying decay or other problems that must be addressed prior to getting veneers. Give us a call today!

What's the best dental floss That Dr Cohan Reccommends

September 8, 2021
floss

Dental floss is similar to a lot of products that depend mainly on the consumer’s preference. Fact is, floss comes in a wide variety of flavors, coatings, and other variations, but all types of floss essentially do the same thing. After all, that is what is most important: that the dental floss you buy is functional—cleaning the areas in between your teeth. If you want to know what the best dental floss is, the answer is the kind that enables you to successfully and regularly clean those areas. So to help you find the right type of floss for you, here are some options.

Flavored Dental Floss

Many people that floss prefer a flavored dental floss because it freshens their breath even more than unscented floss. The latter can also take on the smells associated with bacteria in your mouth. And we all know how bad that can be. So, if flavored dental floss is what you prefer, and it allows you to floss your teeth regularly, then it is automatically best for your mouth.

floss

Flossers

There are also products on the market called flossers, which usually consist of a plastic instrument with strung floss and a pick on the opposite end. This option can be both effective at cleaning the areas in between your teeth and scraping off plaque. These flossers also come flavored in mint and various other varieties.

Gentle Dental Floss

Some people find that typical dental floss is too harsh on their gums. For that reason some companies make floss with soft coatings that are less abrasive on the gums. For the most part these types of floss are just as effective as regular floss, and for those people that require a more sensitive approach to flossing, especially when just starting out, this is the best option.

How to Pick the Right Floss in Las Vegas, Nevada

Of the aforementioned options, it is difficult to name an absolute best type of floss. However, Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team say that the type of floss that works best for you, giving you the greatest chance of succeeding at regular flossing, is the best. For more information on floss, contact our Las Vegas office.

Best Dental Fillings in Summerlin

August 25, 2021
fillings

Did you know there are as many types of dental fillings and teeth bonding as there are flavors of ice cream? Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. Still, when you visit the dentist with a cavity, there are many filling options. Most of us just sit in the chair, open our mouths, and let the dentist work his or her magic. But have you ever stopped to consider what the dentist is filling and restoring your decayed or broken tooth with?

Five types of dental fillings

There are five basic kinds of dental filing material. The dentist decides which type to use based on the degree of the decay, the cost of the material, and the type of dental insurance you have.

  1. Dental amalgam, or silver fillings, have been used to fill cavities for more than 150 years. Dental amalgam is the most common type of dental filling. It's strong, durable, and less expensive than other types.
  2. Composite fillings, or white fillings, are popular because the color matches the rest of your teeth. Composite fillings are a combination of resin and plastic. They are more aesthetically pleasing than silver fillings but are also less durable.
  3. Ceramic fillings are durable and visually appealing (tooth-colored), but they are expensive. They are made of porcelain and have been shown to be resistant to staining.
  4. Glass ionomers are typically used on children whose teeth are still changing. Constructed from glass and acrylic, glass ionomers are designed to last fewer than five years. The benefit of these dental fillings is that they release fluoride, which protects the changing tooth from further decay.
  5. Unless you’re a rock or movie star, gold fillings aren’t common. While a gold filling is durable, non-corrosive, and can last more than 15 years, it not only takes more than one dental visit to place, but, as you can imagine, it is expensive.

Dental X-Ray Safety at Summerlin Dental Solutions

August 18, 2021
x-ray

It's easy to be skeptical about X-rays whether we speak of a full-body X-ray or a dental X-ray. Radiation is radiation. It's vital to know all the facts before judging too harshly, though. Dental X-rays can be one of the best preventive tools for your dental health. We offer various treatments at Summerlin Dental Solutions, but helping you become better informed is one of the best ways to decide what will be best for you.

According to the AmericanDental Association, healthy adults typically receive routine dental X-rays every two to three years. The timeline for children is every one or two years, and one and a half for teens. Children and teens require more X-rays than adults because their teeth are still developing, which makes them more susceptible to cavities.

In general, Dr. Marianne Cohan will determine how often dental X-rays need to be taken for each individual patient, taking into consideration physical symptoms, clinical findings, and risk for infection. Most dental professionals use Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) to help them determine how often X-rays should be taken, so you can rest assured that we are making an informed decision.

In addition to that, it should be reassuring to know that these days, most dental X-rays are digital, which significantly reduces your exposure to radiation. In fact, you’re likely to pick up more radiation just from being in the sun! Lead aprons and thyroid collars are also tools that Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team use to keep X-ray exposure to a minimum.

At our office, Summerlin Dental Solutions, we believe that diagnosing cavities and other potentially harmful conditions by dental X-ray does you more good than harm. If you have any questions about our X-rays, feel free to give our Las Vegas office a call or bring up the subject during your next appointment!

Your Lips at Summerlin Dental Solutions

August 11, 2021
lip

When you think of Dr. Marianne Cohan, you naturally think of your teeth, not your lips. But your dental professional is concerned with more than the teeth, as important as they are. All aspects of your oral health—gums, bite, tongue, mouth—contribute to your well-being. So many elements go into creating your beautiful smile, and your lips? They’re front and center.

Your Lip Service
  • SPF—BFF

You already know that sunscreen is your best friend when it comes to protecting your skin. But don’t forget your lips when you’re slathering on the sunscreen! Delicate lip tissue is also susceptible to the sun’s damaging UV rays. Use a lip balm or lipstick with an appropriate SPF (Sun Protection Factor) for your skin type, and apply it liberally. Don’t forget to reapply every hour or two, after eating and drinking, and after going in the water. And if you’re protecting your children from the sun’s rays, check with your doctor about using sunscreen on young lips.

  • Healthy Hydrating

Dry, chapped lips are no one’s go-to look. And while moisturizers and balms can help dry lips recover, there’s a simple preventative measure you can take to avoid or reduce dryness.  You know how important water is for our bodies, and it’s essential for hydrating our lips as well. Make sure you drink the recommended amount of water each day for lips (and skin!) that are healthy and hydrated.

Not so healthy liquids? Alcohol. Alcohol is dehydrating, which undoes the benefits of that water you’ve been drinking. More than that, excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to oral cancer, especially when coupled with tobacco use.

  • Toss the Tobacco

All tobacco users have an increased risk for oral cancer. Pipe and cigar smokers are particularly at risk for lip cancers, and smokeless tobacco users have a greater risk of cancers on the inner lip surface. Need another reason to quit? Smoking leads to an increase in lip lines (wrinkles) and a decrease in lip volume.

When you come to our Las Vegas office for regular checkups, you can also get regular screenings for oral cancer and other oral conditions. While irregularities are often benign, lip cancer is one of the most common forms of oral cancer, and detecting cancerous or precancerous lesions as early as possible is important for treatment. If you have a sore or lump that doesn’t go away, a red or white patch of skin, bleeding or pain, or any other symptom that concerns you, talk to Dr. Marianne Cohan.

Protect yourself from the sun, hydrate, use alcohol in moderation, give up tobacco if you are using it, and see your dentist regularly for examinations. These simple practices are beneficial not only for your expressive lips, but for your overall health and well-being. And feel free to spread the word—healthy habits and preventative care should be on everyone’s lips!
