Preventative Dental Care

dental

You should never neglect preventative dental care, no matter how old you are. If you commit to regular dental checkups and take care of your teeth at home, you can have a beautiful, healthy smile for the rest of your life. Several simple measures can be taken to prevent the development of plaque and cavities:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably more, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended for thorough removal of plaque and food particles from tooth surfaces. When you brush the top of your tongue, you get rid of food particles that might cause plaque and bad breath. Always remember to clean your tongue.
  • A daily flossing routine is recommended for optimal oral hygiene. To aid in reducing bacterial growth and improve the flavor and aroma of your breath, you can also use a mouthwash. Cavity-causing bacteria can thrive in the tiny crevices between teeth that toothbrush bristles can't reach. Using dental floss and mouthwash, you may clean the spaces between your teeth and under your gum line, where plaque and food particles like to hide.
  • Eat a balanced diet and make an effort to limit sugary snacks. Eating raw veggies, plain yogurt, cheese, and fruit can all help keep your teeth and gums in good shape.
  • Visit your dentist regularly (at least once every six months) to have a professional cleaning performed.
  • Dental sealants are plastic coatings that can be applied by your dentist to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth for added protection. If you play sports, talk to your dentist about getting a custom-made mouthguard to protect your teeth and smile from the wear and tear of the game.
To schedule your next dental cleaning and examination, please contact our office if it has been more than six months since your last visit.
