75 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your First Visit & Getting Started in Summerlin

Everything you need to know before your first appointment at our Summerlin office near Tivoli Village and Downtown Summerlin.

  1. I’m nervous about visiting a new dentist in Las Vegas. What can I expect at my first appointment at Summerlin Dental Solutions?

We completely understand  you are not alone, and there is absolutely no judgment here. When you walk into our Summerlin office at 851 S Rampart Blvd, you’ll be greeted by name by our friendly front desk team. Dr. Cohan will personally sit with you, review your health history, take any needed digital X-rays (with up to 90% less radiation than old-style film), and have an honest conversation about your goals and concerns. There is never any pressure, and we go at whatever pace feels comfortable for you.

  1. How early should I arrive for my first dental visit at your Summerlin office?

We ask new patients to arrive about 10–15 minutes early so we can welcome you properly, answer any questions, and make sure your paperwork is in order. That said, you can save even more time by completing your patient forms online from home before you come in. That way you can walk in, relax, and we’ll get you started right away.

  1. Can I fill out my new patient forms online before coming to your Las Vegas dental office?

Absolutely! We know your time is valuable, especially with everything happening in the Las Vegas valley. Our patient forms are available on our website so you can complete them from the comfort of your couch, your office, or even while waiting at Boca Park or Downtown Summerlin. Just visit our Patient Forms page and everything is ready to go.

  1. Do I need a referral from another dentist to see Dr. Cohan in Summerlin?

We’re here to help, not to judge. Come as you are.

  1. What should I bring to my first appointment at your Summerlin dental office?

Everyday Oral Health & Prevention Tips for Las Vegas Residents

Practical advice from Dr. Cohan on keeping your smile healthy in the desert climate.

  1. How often should I visit the dentist for checkups if I live in Las Vegas?

Dr. Cohan recommends checkups every six months for most patients. The dry desert climate here in Las Vegas can actually accelerate certain dental issues like dry mouth, enamel erosion, and gum irritation, so staying on a regular schedule helps us catch small problems before they become big ones. Some patients with specific conditions may benefit from visits every three to four months,  Dr. Cohan will let you know what’s right for you.

  1. Does the dry Las Vegas climate really affect my teeth and gums?

It absolutely can. Las Vegas has extremely low humidity, and many of our patients experience dry mouth as a result, especially during the hot summer months. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense against cavities and gum disease, so when it decreases, your risk goes up. Dr. Cohan often recommends staying well-hydrated, using a fluoride rinse, and coming in for regular cleanings to counteract the effects of our desert environment.

  1. How can I prevent cavities between dental visits here in Summerlin?

The basics go a long way: brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and drink plenty of water, especially important in our Las Vegas heat. Limit sugary snacks and acidic drinks (including sports drinks, which are popular here). And of course, keeping your regular six-month checkups with Dr. Cohan means we can catch anything early while it’s still small and easy to treat.

  1. What kind of toothbrush and toothpaste does Dr. Cohan recommend?

Dr. Cohan generally recommends a soft-bristled toothbrush,  electric or manual, whichever you’ll actually use consistently. For toothpaste, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance and a fluoride formula. If you have sensitive teeth (very common in our dry climate), a sensitivity-specific toothpaste can make a real difference. At your next visit, our team is happy to give you personalized product recommendations.

  1. Is flossing really that important? I brush my teeth every day.

We hear this question all the time, and we get it! But here’s the truth: brushing only reaches about 60% of your tooth surfaces. The areas between your teeth are where cavities and gum disease love to start. Flossing once a day, or using a water flosser if you prefer, cleans the spots your toothbrush simply cannot reach. Dr. Cohan can show you the most effective technique at your next visit.

  1. My gums bleed when I brush. Should I be worried?

Bleeding gums are actually one of the earliest signs of gum disease, and it’s something we see often in our Las Vegas patients. The good news is that when caught early, it’s very treatable. Please don’t ignore it or stop brushing that area,  that can make it worse. Schedule a visit with Dr. Cohan so we can take a look, determine the cause, and get you on the right track. A professional cleaning is often all it takes to turn things around.

  1. What causes bad breath, and can my Summerlin dentist help fix it?

Persistent bad breath can be caused by a number of things: bacteria buildup on the tongue, gum disease, dry mouth (very common here in Las Vegas), cavities, or even certain medications. A thorough cleaning and exam with Dr. Cohan can identify the underlying cause. In many cases, a professional cleaning combined with some simple at-home adjustments solves the problem completely.

  1. At what age should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time in Summerlin?

The American Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Dr. Cohan loves seeing little ones — the first visit is gentle, quick, and focused on making your child feel safe and comfortable. Starting early helps build a positive relationship with dental care that lasts a lifetime.

  1. Are dental sealants a good idea for my kids in Las Vegas?

Dental sealants are one of the best preventive measures available for children. They’re a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where most childhood cavities develop. The procedure is quick, painless, and can reduce cavity risk significantly. Dr. Cohan often recommends sealants for children as soon as their permanent molars come in.

  1. I drink a lot of coffee living in Las Vegas. Is it damaging my teeth?

Coffee is a staple for a lot of our patients! While it can stain your teeth over time and its acidity can weaken enamel with heavy consumption, moderate coffee drinking is generally fine with good oral hygiene. Rinsing your mouth with water after your coffee, using a straw, and keeping up with professional cleanings at our Summerlin office will go a long way. If staining becomes a concern, Dr. Cohan offers teeth whitening options that produce beautiful results.

  1. Does drinking Las Vegas tap water help my teeth? Is there fluoride in it?

Yes! Las Vegas Valley Water District adds fluoride to the local water supply, which helps strengthen tooth enamel and reduce cavities. Drinking tap water is actually one of the easiest things you can do for your dental health here. If you drink primarily bottled or filtered water, you may be missing out on that fluoride benefit — talk to Dr. Cohan about whether a supplemental fluoride treatment might be helpful for you.

  1. How can I protect my teeth if I play sports or exercise outdoors in the Las Vegas heat?

If you play contact sports, a custom-fitted mouthguard from Dr. Cohan is one of the best investments you can make. Over-the-counter guards don’t fit as well and offer less protection. For outdoor exercise in our Las Vegas heat, the biggest thing is staying hydrated — dehydration reduces saliva flow, which increases your risk of cavities and gum problems. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.

  1. I grind my teeth at night. Is that something Dr. Cohan can help with?

Absolutely. Teeth grinding (bruxism) is very common, and Dr. Cohan sees it frequently in our Las Vegas patients, stress, the fast pace of life here, and even the dry climate can contribute. Left untreated, grinding can crack teeth, wear down enamel, and cause jaw pain. Dr. Cohan can fit you with a custom night guard that protects your teeth while you sleep and often eliminates the headaches and jaw soreness that come with grinding.

  1. Is mouthwash necessary, or is brushing and flossing enough?

Brushing and flossing are the foundation, but a good mouthwash can be a helpful addition,  especially here in Las Vegas where dry mouth is so common. An alcohol-free fluoride rinse can help strengthen enamel and keep your mouth feeling fresh between cleanings. Dr. Cohan can recommend the right product for your specific needs on your next visit.

Insurance, Cost & Paying for Dental Care in Las Vegas

Straightforward answers about affording the care you deserve — because cost should never stand between you and a healthy smile.

  1. What if I don’t have dental insurance? Can I still afford to come to your Las Vegas office?

We offer flexible financing through CareCredit and HFD, including 0% interest for 12 months on qualifying treatments. We also have an in-house discount savings plan designed specifically for patients without insurance. Our team will sit down with you and find a payment option that fits your budget.

  1. Do you offer payment plans for expensive dental procedures in Summerlin?

  1. How much does a routine dental cleaning cost at Summerlin Dental Solutions?

The cost of a cleaning depends on the type you need a standard prophylactic cleaning is different from a deep cleaning for gum disease. Rather than quoting a generic price, we believe in giving you an honest, personalized estimate after Dr. Cohan evaluates your specific needs. We’ll always tell you the cost upfront before any work begins, and we’ll help you maximize your insurance benefits if you have coverage.

  1. Will you tell me the cost of my treatment before starting any work?

Always. Transparent pricing is one of our core values. Before any procedure, you’ll receive a detailed breakdown showing every procedure code, the fee for each service, what your insurance covers, and your exact out-of-pocket responsibility. Dr. Cohan will never recommend unnecessary treatment, and you’ll never be surprised by a bill.

  1. Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for dental work at your Summerlin office?

Yes! Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can be used for most dental procedures, including cleanings, fillings, crowns, implants, and more. Since FSA funds often expire at the end of the year, many of our Las Vegas patients schedule year-end dental work to make the most of their remaining balance. Our team can help you plan accordingly.

  1. I need major dental work but I’m worried about the cost. What are my options?

We hear this concern often, and we want you to know that there is almost always a path forward. Dr. Cohan will discuss all of your treatment options, from the ideal plan to more budget-conscious alternatives, so you can make an informed decision. Combined with our financing options (including 0% interest plans), we’ve helped thousands of Las Vegas patients get the care they need without financial stress.

  1. Does your Summerlin dental office offer a discount plan for patients without insurance?

Yes! Our in-house discount savings plan is specifically designed for patients without traditional dental insurance. It gives you access to reduced rates on routine visits, cleanings, X-rays, and treatments throughout the year. Ask our front desk team for the details, it’s one of the most popular options for our uninsured patients in the Las Vegas area.

  1. Is cosmetic dentistry covered by dental insurance in Las Vegas?

Most cosmetic procedures, like teeth whitening and veneers, are considered elective and aren’t covered by insurance. However, some treatments that serve both cosmetic and functional purposes (like crowns or Invisalign) may have partial coverage depending on your plan. Our team will always check your benefits and let you know what’s covered before you make any decisions.

  1. Do you submit insurance claims on my behalf, or do I have to handle that myself?

We take care of it for you! Our experienced front desk team files all insurance claims on your behalf, tracks them, and follows up to make sure you receive the maximum benefit you’re entitled to. You focus on your smile, we handle the paperwork.

We also offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation so you can choose the level of comfort that’s right for you. Many of our most anxious patients now actually look forward to their visits.

  1. What does your dental office look like inside? Is it a typical clinical environment?

Not at all, and that’s very intentional. Our Summerlin office has been gorgeously redesigned to feel more like a spa than a dental clinic. The waiting area is warm, comfortable, and calming. The treatment rooms feature a unique dual-screen setup so you can see exactly what Dr. Cohan sees. Patients often tell us it’s the most beautiful dental office they’ve ever visited. You can take a virtual tour on our website before you come in.

We sure do! We want your time with us to be genuinely pleasant. We offer complimentary beverages, cozy blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and personal entertainment screens so you can relax during your procedure. Our goal is to make every detail of your visit feel thoughtful and comfortable, because you deserve that.

  1. Will Dr. Cohan explain what she’s doing during my procedure, or will I be in the dark?

Plus, our dual-screen treatment rooms mean you can actually see what she sees in real time on your own screen. You’ll never be left wondering what’s happening in your own mouth.

  1. What is sedation dentistry, and is it safe at your Las Vegas practice?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental procedures. We offer three levels: nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) for mild relaxation, oral sedation for moderate anxiety, and IV sedation for patients who want to be deeply relaxed. All sedation options are administered safely by experienced professionals. Dr. Cohan has over three decades of experience using sedation, and your safety is always our top priority.

  1. Can I listen to music or watch something during my dental appointment in Summerlin?

Absolutely! We provide noise-canceling headphones so you can listen to your own music, a podcast, or whatever helps you relax. Our treatment rooms also have screens available for your entertainment. Anything that makes the experience more comfortable for you is something we’re happy to accommodate.

  1. How does Dr. Cohan make injections and numbing less painful?

Dr. Cohan has an incredibly gentle touch,  it’s one of the things patients comment on most in their reviews. She uses a topical numbing gel before any injection so you barely feel the needle, and she administers anesthesia slowly to minimize discomfort. Many patients tell us they didn’t even feel the first prick. If you’re nervous about needles, please let us know — we have experience making even the most anxious patients feel completely at ease.

  1. Can I bring a family member or friend into the treatment room with me for support?

Of course. If having someone you trust nearby helps you feel more comfortable, we’re happy to welcome them into the treatment room. Your comfort is our priority, and we’ll do whatever it takes to make your visit a positive experience.

  1. I’ve had bad experiences at other dental offices in Las Vegas. How is your practice different?

We hear this more often than you might think. What makes Summerlin Dental Solutions different starts with Dr. Cohan herself,  she personally performs many procedures (including cleanings and exams), she never rushes, and she will never recommend treatment you don’t need. You’ll see the same doctor every visit, not a rotating roster of associates. Our 19 Best of Las Vegas awards and 4.9 Google rating from hundreds of verified patients speak to the consistency of that experience.

  1. What do your actual patients say about the experience at Summerlin Dental Solutions?

Our patients are honestly our best ambassadors. Across hundreds of Google reviews, the words that come up again and again are: gentle, kind, honest, professional, thorough, and comfortable. Many patients specifically mention that Dr. Cohan took away their fear of the dentist. You can read real, unfiltered patient reviews on our Patient Reviews page — we think you’ll see why our patients stay with us for years.

  1. Is your Summerlin dental office wheelchair accessible?

Yes, our office is fully ADA accessible. The building entrance, waiting area, and treatment rooms are all designed to accommodate patients with mobility needs. If you have any specific accessibility requirements, please let us know when you schedule your appointment and we’ll make sure everything is ready for you.

  1. How long will I have to wait in the waiting room once I arrive?

We respect your time as much as we respect your smile. Dr. Cohan runs a punctual office — when you’re scheduled for 10:00 AM, we aim to have you in the chair by 10:00 AM. We don’t overbook, and we don’t rush. If anything unexpected arises that might cause a brief delay, our team will let you know immediately and keep you comfortable while you wait.

  1. Will I see Dr. Cohan personally, or will I be treated by a different dentist?

You will see Dr. Cohan. She is the only dentist at Summerlin Dental Solutions, which means you get the direct, personal attention of a 19-time award-winning dentist at every single visit. You’ll never be handed off to someone you’ve never met. That continuity of care is something our patients truly value.

  1. Do you have a quiet, calming atmosphere, or is it a busy, noisy office?

Our office was intentionally designed to feel peaceful and calming. From the soothing music to the warm lighting and spa-like decor, every detail was chosen to create a relaxing environment. We don’t operate like a high-volume clinic, Dr. Cohan sees a limited number of patients per day so she can give each person the unhurried attention they deserve.

  1. Can I take a virtual tour of your Summerlin dental office before my first visit?

Yes! We encourage it. Seeing the office ahead of time helps many of our patients, especially those with anxiety, feel more at ease before they even walk through the door. Visit our Office Tour page on the website to take a look around and see for yourself why patients describe it as the most comfortable dental office they’ve ever visited.

Common Dental Procedures & What to Expect

Friendly, straightforward answers about the treatments Las Vegas patients ask about most.

  1. How long does a typical dental cleaning take at your Summerlin office?

A standard cleaning usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If you need a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) for gum health, that may take a bit longer and may be done in stages. Either way, Dr. Cohan will explain everything beforehand so you know exactly what to expect and how long you’ll be in the chair.

  1. Does teeth whitening actually work, and how long do results last in Las Vegas?

Professional teeth whitening works beautifully, and the results are dramatically better than over-the-counter products. Most patients see their teeth lighten by several shades. With good oral hygiene and touch-ups as needed, results can last a year or more. Keep in mind that coffee, red wine, and certain foods can gradually stain teeth over time, but Dr. Cohan can advise you on how to maintain your bright smile in our Summerlin sun.

  1. What’s the difference between a regular filling and a tooth-colored filling?

Traditional silver (amalgam) fillings are durable but visible. Tooth-colored (composite) fillings are made from a material that matches your natural tooth color, so they’re virtually invisible. Dr. Cohan uses tooth-colored fillings for most patients because they look better, bond directly to the tooth structure, and preserve more of your natural tooth. Plus, they’re mercury-free.

  1. How long does it take to get a dental crown at Summerlin Dental Solutions?

Getting a crown typically requires two visits. At the first appointment, Dr. Cohan prepares the tooth and takes a precise digital scan using our TRIOS scanner,  no messy putty impressions. A temporary crown is placed while a master dental lab crafts your permanent crown. At your second visit, usually one to two weeks later, your permanent crown is fitted and bonded into place. Dr. Cohan is known for crowns that look completely natural.

  1. Is getting a dental implant painful? What is the recovery like?

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the implant process actually is. Dr. Cohan uses local anesthesia and sedation options to keep you completely comfortable during the procedure. Afterward, most patients manage any soreness with over-the-counter pain medication and are back to their normal routine within a day or two. Our 3D CBCT imaging allows Dr. Cohan to plan every implant with surgical precision, which leads to better outcomes and easier recoveries.

  1. How long does Invisalign treatment take for adults in Las Vegas?

Most adult Invisalign cases at our Summerlin office take between 6 and 18 months, depending on the complexity of your alignment needs. Dr. Cohan uses digital scanning to create a personalized treatment plan, and you’ll be able to see a preview of your expected results before you even start. The clear aligners are virtually invisible, removable, and far more comfortable than traditional braces.

  1. What happens during a deep teeth cleaning, and does it hurt?

A deep cleaning goes below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar buildup that regular cleaning can’t reach. Dr. Cohan numbs the area first so you’re comfortable throughout the process. Most patients describe the feeling as pressure rather than pain. Afterward, your gums may feel slightly tender for a day or two, but the long-term benefit to your gum health is significant. Our laser dentistry option can make the process even more comfortable.

  1. Can Dr. Cohan fix a chipped or broken tooth the same day at your Summerlin office?

In many cases, yes! Depending on the severity of the chip or break, Dr. Cohan may be able to repair it with dental bonding during a single visit. For more significant damage that requires a crown or veneer, the process will take two visits. Either way, if you have a dental emergency, call us at (702) 341-9160 and we’ll get you in as quickly as possible.

  1. What is anti-aging dentistry, and does your Summerlin office offer it?

Anti-aging dentistry focuses on restoring the youthful structure and appearance of your smile,  things like replacing worn teeth that have shortened over the years, addressing volume loss in the face, and creating a more balanced, lifted appearance through dental work. As an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, Dr. Cohan is uniquely qualified to combine cosmetic dental techniques with an understanding of facial aesthetics to take years off your appearance.

  1. What is the difference between veneers and crowns? Which one do I need?

Veneers are thin shells that cover the front surface of your teeth,  they’re ideal for cosmetic improvements like color, shape, and minor alignment issues. Crowns cover the entire tooth and are typically needed when a tooth is significantly damaged, weakened, or has had a root canal. Dr. Cohan will evaluate your specific situation and recommend the option that gives you the best result. During your consultation, she can show you a digital preview of both options so you can see the difference.

The results speak for themselves — her crowns and veneers are consistently described by patients as looking and feeling better than their natural teeth.
