5 Methods for Straighter Teeth

August 12, 2022

Everyone wants straighter teeth. Your self-confidence may suffer if you have teeth that are crowded, misaligned, or otherwise crooked. In addition to this, they make your smile appear more unhealthy than it actually is. If you would like your teeth to be straighter, you are in luck because you have various options from which to pick. While others require a little bit more time, some provide benefits almost immediately.

straighter

1. Invisalign

The use of orthodontic appliances to physically align one's teeth is the most effective method for improving the appearance of one's smile. But if you're like the majority of people, you're definitely looking for an alternative to traditional braces that is less noticeable. Invisalign was developed specifically for situations like this one.

invisalign-treatment

Summerlin Invisalign will straighten your teeth by using a series of removable, transparent aligner trays in pairs. The only thing you need to do is put them on for the allotted amount of time and then switch them out as recommended. In most cases, this is between 20 and 22 hours per day, which leaves you plenty of time to remove your dentures before meals or when you need to brush and floss your teeth.

You will go through each set of aligners in your series by moving on to the next pair of aligners every two weeks. When you do so, you will feel a light pressure forcing your teeth into the position that you want them to be in.

Your crooked smile is gradually being corrected right in front of your very eyes. There is no requirement for brackets or wiring! The best part is that you won't have to make as many trips to the orthodontist or stay there for as long as you would if you opted for traditional braces.

2. Composite Bonding

Dental bonding is a procedure that can conceal minor imperfections in teeth in a quick and effective manner. Bonding could be an option for you if you have a small space between your teeth, a chipped area, or misaligned teeth.

Bonding is sculpted onto the enamel and mixes in with the color of your natural smile, similar to how white fillings are shaped onto the enamel. It simply takes a few minutes to mould it to the tooth and cure it, so you can see the results the exact same day.

The majority of composite bonding may be made to endure for a few years before it needs to be replaced or modified. If you are thinking about having your teeth whitened, you should do so before your bonding operation so that we can get the composite to match your teeth as precisely as possible.

Bonding can be simply combined with other cosmetic treatments provided by Dr. Cohan, such as teeth whitening or crowns. As we determine what would work best for your smile as a whole, we will approach your transformation by focusing on each individual tooth. It may come down to something as straightforward as covering up a single imperfection in a single tooth at a time!

3. Dental Veneers

Dental veneers, which can sometimes be referred to as "instant braces," quickly cover the natural teeth that are located behind them, giving the appearance of considerably straighter teeth.

Veneers are thin shells made of porcelain that are bonded to the front surfaces of a few of the teeth in your smile. Typically, it is the six to eight upper front teeth, however this number can vary depending on the width of your grin. Because Dr. Cohan is able to make adjustments to the form of each veneer before it is cemented into place, we are able to have them fabricated in a manner that might make crooked teeth appear to be straighter (no braces required.)

In addition, porcelain veneers can be utilized to change the length, width, and even contour of a person's teeth. If you have a tooth that is slightly narrow (which can cause gaps between teeth) or too short, the veneer can fill in those areas to make your tooth appear to have the ideal shape. When planning the form and color of each one-of-a-kind veneer, we take into account the specific requirements of each individual customer.

When we plan, craft, and finally place your final restorations, we will need multiple appointments in order to finish a whole case of dental veneers.

4. Crowns Made of Ceramic

Dental crowns, sometimes known as "caps," are an excellent restoration option for teeth whose enamel has been significantly worn down, chipped, or is otherwise improperly shaped. If you have a tooth that, as a result of previous damage, presents an irregular or crooked appearance, a crown can be the best answer for you to make your teeth straighter.

Crowns are dental restorations that cover the whole visible portion of a tooth, including the gum tissue and bone that surround it. Dr. Cohan will have each crown created so that it mimics the shade and contour of the teeth on either side of the affected tooth. This will ensure that the restored tooth blends in seamlessly with the rest of your now straighter smile.

When a tooth is lost, it can be replaced with a dental implant, which can then have a crown placed on top of it making the teeth straighter.

image01

Because each crown is crafted uniquely in a laboratory, we are able to improve the appearance of your tooth's alignment. By merely correcting one particular tooth, the finished product will have a more symmetrical appearance and will transition more smoothly from one tooth to the next.

5. Take Care of the Spotting and Discoloration

The presence of shadows and stains in your teeth might give the appearance that they are crooked even if they are not. It's possible that certain sections of your tooth have a dark stain, while others have white patches that stand out more from the tooth around them. Reducing these will give you the appearance of straighter teeth.

When light strikes your teeth at a particular angle, the points in your enamel will create an optical illusion that gives the impression that your teeth are twisted or tilted.

Discoloration can be eliminated with the help of specialized cosmetic treatments, which we can use to address these difficulties. For instance, having your teeth whitened professionally, undergoing the ICON white spot treatment, or having composite bonding done can all produce very noticeable effects.

TikTok and Teeth Filing: A Look at The Dangers of This Growing Trend

August 10, 2022

Teeth filing at home? The COVID-19 Pandemic caused an extreme rise in people turning to at-home procedures in order to stay safely in the comfort of their home. One of these at-home procedures became a TikTok trend. TikTok and at-home teeth filing: is it safe? Let’s discuss.

filing

When considering whether or not to file your teeth at home, it's important to consider the benefits, drawbacks, and any health risks.

Filing teeth is known in the dental field as enameloplasty. This process calls for the careful removal of a negligible amount of enamel from the teeth's outer surface. Dentists with the skills and training to use a sanding tool, laser, or other piece of equipment to alter the sides or surface of a patient's teeth do the procedure, which is also known as teeth shaving or recontouring.

Benefits, costs, and risks linked with tooth filing, as well as the newest TikTok trends, will all be covered in this article.

As for the benefits, or explanations for its popularity, teeth contouring:

There are several situations in which improving one's smile by changing its appearance might be a positive move. A few flaws in your smile could be something you'd like to see improved. Your bite may be crooked, your molars may have rough spots, and you may have issues with the length, smoothness, or shape of individual teeth.

Dental filing is a popular method of corrective dentistry for both medical and cosmetic reasons.

Tooth contouring (filing) has various medical benefits, including a decreased incidence of tooth decay due to the elimination of tiny overlaps between teeth. Tooth contouring helps even out your bite, which can prevent or alleviate jaw pain, and is a necessary step in preparing your teeth for a crown (following a root canal).

The cosmetic advantages of teeth filing include a more attractive smile with fewer faults, increased assurance in one's appearance, an inexpensive solution to minor dental repairs or uneven teeth, and a boost in one's confidence.

Several factors, including health and aesthetics, contribute to the widespread practice of tooth filing. You may be a good candidate for this inexpensive smile makeover if you have a single tooth that is significantly larger than the others or is crooked you would consider filing. Getting your teeth whitened by a cosmetic dentist is as easy as snapping a photo and sending it over.

Wondering whether there were any risks along with teeth filing?
filing

To change the shape of a tooth, a dentist will file it down. This technique has a low potential for complications.

Concerns center on the risk of enamel erosion, which can result in tooth damage. The softer dentin layer and the dental nerve are protected by this hard outer layer of the tooth. The protective properties of enamel make it effective in warding off tooth decay and illness, medically known as caries.

Regrettably, this hardworking layer does not naturally regenerate. Once tooth enamel has been gone, it cannot be replaced. It's possible that issues like:

• heightened tooth sensitivity and pain would arise if too much enamel was lost

• teeth that are more prone to breaking;

• an increased risk of developing cavities.

It is crucial that a qualified professional who is familiar with the nature of tooth enamel and its sensitivity to damage perform this sensitive procedure.

It's becoming increasingly common, but potentially dangerous, for people to self-fillet their teeth using a nail file.

Dentists and orthodontists all around the United States are reeling from the current viral craze of DIY teeth filing with nail files. Without proper training, these people attempting filingmight use the wrong files to even out any bumps or irregularities in their teeth, which could have a negative impact on their oral health.

Experts in the dental field are speaking out against the trend on TikTok.

Incorrect tooth filing, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, can permanently alter a person's teeth and smile. Once the enamel that protects your teeth is worn away, you will never be able to get it back.

Without enamel protection, teeth become more vulnerable to sensitivity and even possible extraction. And this is especially true if the tooth was weak to begin with.

Even popular TikTok users have expressed shame at having their teeth shaved in public, pleading with their fans not to follow in their footsteps and become "DIY dentists."

Any time you're thinking of altering the appearance of your teeth, whether for cosmetic or functional reasons, it's a good idea to consult with a dentist first.

Fillings in teeth: frequently asked questions

While considering your options for dental care, you may be wondering if tooth contouring should be a part of your treatment.

Some answers to frequently asked questions about enameloplasty are provided here.

When obtaining braces or clear aligners, why is this surgery done first?

Shaving or otherwise shaping the patient's teeth before placing braces on them or utilizing a clear aligner system like Invisalign for orthodontic purposes is standard practice. In order to provide more space in your mouth for your teeth, your dentist or orthodontist may remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth.

With even a little bit of space to move, your teeth will be able to straighten and align themselves more easily with braces or a clear aligner.

Do you experience any pain during a tooth filling?

To answer your question directly: no. Your dentist won't be touching the sensitive dentin or the gum line while they work on your teeth because there are no nerve endings in the enamel. Also, you usually won't need any form of anaesthetic for filing your teeth, and the danger of side effects is negligible.

What is the going rate for having a tooth filed down?

Thankfully, having your teeth reshaped requires nothing more than your dentist's time, skill, and high-tech tools. This means it's a lot more cost-effective than alternatives, like as installing costly implants or performing extensive surgery, for enhancing one's smile's appearance.

The final cost of tooth contouring will depend on the extent of the necessary treatment and will vary greatly from one dental specialist to the next. Budget an average of $50 to $300 per tooth for dental work.

Does dental insurance pay for fillings?

Most dental insurance plans won't cover the cost of filling cavities unless it's medically essential due to an injury. Find out what policies your insurer offers and whether or not you qualify for coverage by getting in touch with them.

How much of the tooth's enamel is ground down?

teeth filing

Thanks to modern dental technology, your dentist can precisely calculate how much enamel needs to be trimmed off your teeth. Dentists typically remove between 0.2 and 0.5 mm of enamel from each tooth, however the actual amount will vary depending on the patient's goals and the tooth's unique structure.

If you're worried about the extent to which your enamel will be reshaped, it's best to discuss your concerns with your dentist before the operation begins. They'll have the information needed to provide a thorough explanation and make any necessary revisions.

What preventative measures against COVID-19 are required?

Fortunately, because to the evolution of medical practices over time, the dental industry is ready for the pandemic. Having any sort of dental procedure done, from teeth bleaching to tartar removal, tooth contouring, or a fundamental set of x-rays, should put your mind at ease, since there are established protocols in place to guarantee your safety.

If you feel better at peace knowing what specific measures your dentist will take to ensure your health during the pandemic, it may be helpful to discuss this with them in advance. You'll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way as a result of this.

Hire a specialist to handle the job.

Researching the pros and cons of getting this dental work done, studying before and after pictures of the patient's teeth, and figuring out how much it will cost to have their teeth filed all lead up to the next step: consulting with dental professionals.

A qualified dentist will examine your teeth, explain your options, and rebuild the trouble spots in a way that won't harm your teeth or gums. Due to the severity of the potential consequences, this surgery must be performed under the supervision of an experienced medical expert.

Nationally, dentists acquire the training and instruction they need to do their jobs properly.

You should arrange an appointment with a dentist in your area who is willing to see new patients. You will be able to discuss your concerns, ask questions, and ultimately decide if this procedure is right for you.

Teeth contouring, whether for medical or cosmetic reasons, requires the expertise of a dentist, so don't do it on your own. Even just one trip to the dentist can give you the confidence that comes from knowing your options and how to safely achieve the best possible results.

Avoid the temptation to make changes to your upper or lower teeth on your own; even if you have good intentions, you could easily do permanent damage. Put another way, you may end up needing even more extensive dental work down the road because of the short-term cosmetic goals you've set for yourself.

How Do I Alleviate The Stress Associated With Going To The Dentist?

August 10, 2022
dentist

When you think about going to the dentist, do you become nervous? Do you put off going to the doctor for your regular checkups because of your anxiety? The fear of pain, the fear of drills, or the prospect of being embarrassed due to poor oral care can all contribute to the anxiety that people have while going to the dentist. The anxiousness that you feel, on the other hand, is quite normal! According to studies, 36 percent of the general population has some form of anxiety or panic in response to visits to the dentist.

There are, to your relief, a variety of strategies you can employ to deal with and alleviate the anxiety caused by visits to the dentist. In this article, we will discuss seven of these methods so that you can protect your dental health now and in the future.

Why do individuals have a fear of going to the dentist?

Visits to the dentist can bring on anxiety for a number of reasons, including apprehension over the operations that will be performed, a previous experience that may have been traumatic, or concern for existing mouth pain.

Having a phobia of dentists is widespread for a variety of reasons, including the following:

• An irrational dread of suffering. When a patient has been through a terrible experience in the past, they frequently connect going to the dentist with additional agony. This makes a person anxious. Hearing about the terrible things that have happened to other people might also give rise to this worry.

• The risk of being humiliated in front of others. Some patients could find themselves worrying about things such, "What if the dentist judges me for not taking excellent care of my teeth?" when they go to the dentist. or "what if the dentist lets slip some discouraging information?" Anxiety caused by a fear of being embarrassed is a common symptom of dental anxiety.

• The dread of potential adverse repercussions. Because of the potential for unpleasant consequences following dental procedures, some individuals avoid going to the dentist. These symptoms, which may include nausea or dizziness, may be the result of anxiousness that is caused by previous events.

• Allowing the dentist to work so close to their mouth can make some people feel as like they have lost control, especially considering that patients typically are unable to see what is being done to them during dental procedures.

• Anxiety about the dentist can also be caused by a fear of needles or injections. When someone has a fear of needles, just thinking about getting an injection in their mouth might make them feel much more uncomfortable.

Strategies to help you relax before going to the dentist.

Even if emotions of anxiety around dental appointments and procedures are rather typical, it is still vital to maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings in order to keep oral health in good standing. The following are some strategies that you can use to ease your anxiety and overcome your phobia of dentists:

Keep in mind that everything is going to be all right.

zen

Trusting that your dentist is an experienced professional who has your oral health and well-being in mind is one strategy for reducing the anxiety associated with dental procedures. Find a dentist with high ratings and positive customer reviews, and see if any of those reviews address the concerns you have about going to the dentist. Doing so will help you feel more at ease. It is recommended that you look for a dentist that takes this approach because some of them will specifically treat individuals who suffer from dental fear and will take measures to ease pain and anxiety.

Learn the ins and outs of your coverage before you go.

Talk to your insurance provider before heading to the dentist appointment to clear up any questions or concerns you may have about the dental charges you may incur as well as the percentage of your checkup or treatment that will be covered by your dental insurance. Your present dental anxiety won't have to be compounded by the additional stress of worrying about money.

Talk things over with your dental practitioner.

If your dentist is unaware of how you are truly feeling, they won't be able to assist you in finding healthy coping mechanisms for your anxiety. It is important that you discuss your concerns with the dentist and the staff, either at the time of your appointment or before it. They might be willing to give you a sedative, which will unquestionably make you feel better and reduce your nervousness.

You should also ask them questions about the procedures process, or you may ask them to walk you through the process entirely. This has a calming effect on patients and helps them feel less anxious during dental procedures.

Put on some headphones or watch a show on your mobile device.

When you wear headphones, some of the sounds that could potentially set off your anxiety will be blocked out. In addition, the act of watching something may serve as a welcome diversion from the anxiety.

Take deep breaths in and out.

Your anxiety can be reduced by learning to meditate or practicing deep breathing exercises; this will help you remain relaxed and peaceful throughout your dentist appointment.

Keep regular dentist appointments.

If you go to the dentist for your checkups on a regular basis, you won't have to worry about being nervous or uncomfortable as you might otherwise. These consultations are meant to address any concerns with oral health before they become a problem.

Make sure to ask about any sedation or medication options available.

You might ask the dentist to provide you with nitrous oxide or sedatives to help calm your anxieties before the procedure. Because of this, the process will go smoothly and without any tension.

Why is it so critical to schedule regular appointments at the dentist?

Regular trips to a dentist in your area are necessary if you want to avoid issues with your oral health and cleanliness, such as the following:

  • Teeth that are discolored Cavities
  • Having bad breath
  • Gum disease
  • Loss of teeth

At Summerlin Dental Solutions, we make certain that you are only treated by the most qualified dental practitioners and in the most calm environment possible.

What exactly does "cosmetic dentistry" entail?

Some Summerlin dentists offer a specialized service known as cosmetic dentistry, which encompasses a wide variety of different treatments and procedures. These procedures involve the implantation of artificial teeth as well as the application of coatings to your natural teeth in order to make them seem whiter. These are cosmetic therapies that are intended to make you feel more assured in social situations, such as when you smile or talk in front of other people. This kind of dentistry is sometimes known as optional dentistry, which suggests that it is typically not required for maintaining good oral health.

What are the many kinds of cosmetic dental procedures at your Summerlin Dental office?

  1. Whitening of the teeth

According to the findings of one study, approximately 10% of the general population had obvious tooth discoloration. Whitening your teeth is a treatment that helps to lessen the look of stains and blemishes on your teeth. The results of the same study showed that tooth bleaching is an excellent method for whitening teeth at your Summerlin Dental office.

One of the most significant advantages of having your teeth whitened is the fact that the results may persist for a very long time – up to 10 years for some individuals. Visit us at your Summerlin Dental office for this therapy for the best possible outcomes. The methods that are utilized by professional Summerlin dentists are not only believed to be considerably safer, but they are also more effective than the treatments that can be done at home.

  1. Dental veneers

Another typical cosmetic procedure at your Summerlin Dental office is the application of dental veneers. Shells that are fabricated to imitate the appearance of real teeth are called veneers. They are bonded to the front surface of the teeth, where they mask flaws in the enamel.

A dental veneer can alleviate numerous aesthetic difficulties. It is possible for the tooth's form to be altered, as well as its length and even its color. To put it simply, it will conceal the real tooth while preserving the integrity of your natural teeth. Although porcelain veneers are by far the most common, there are a wide variety of other options.

  1. Dental bonding

Dental bonding at your Summerlin Dental office is a process that can be effective for repairing damaged teeth or reducing discolorations in teeth. During this process, a substance known as composite is utilized. An adhesive is used to attach it to the tooth in question. After that, a curing light is utilized to permanently fix it in place. The goal is to patch up the holes that have been created by cracks and chips. The compound consisting of resin is frequently used utilized for the purpose of covering up discolored teeth.

  1. Dental implants

Loss of teeth is rather frequent, and while dentures are one solution, dental implants at your Summerlin Dental office are by far the preferable alternative for repairing a missing tooth or teeth. The implantation of a foundation into the jaw is the first step in getting dental implants at your Summerlin Dental office. After the tooth root is removed and replaced with metal posts that resemble screws, an artificial tooth is fabricated and positioned into the prepared foundation. Dental implants can help restore your smile by filling up any missing teeth or gaps. Although it is sometimes an expensive procedure, the outcomes are almost always great and long-lasting.

What exactly is the difference between aesthetic dentistry and restorative dentistry?

There are parallels to be drawn between the two, yet each serves a distinct function.

The term "restorative dentistry" refers to several procedures that are necessary in order to restore your dental health. Among these options are dental implants, which can improve your ability to chew food; root canal therapy, which can treat tooth decay; and dental fillings, which can treat cavities.

In the field of dentistry known as cosmetic dentistry, elective procedures are those that can be performed to improve the appearance of a patient's smile. In most cases, the goal at your Summerlin Dental office is to generate a set of teeth that is whiter and better aligned in order to improve the appearance of the patient's smile.

How much does it cost to get cosmetic dental work done?

There is typically a disparity in the prices charged for procedures from one dental office to the next. Making an appointment with a dentist is the most effective approach to acquiring an accurate estimate of the costs involved. At your Summerlin Dental office we will evaluate your teeth and provide suggestions on which cosmetic procedures are likely to produce the finest results, as well as provide an estimate of the associated costs. It is possible that each tooth will cost anything from $600 to $5,000 to treat, depending on the procedure that needs to be performed.

Does cosmetic dentistry fall within the coverage of insurance?

It is possible that certain dental insurance policies will pay for some procedures associated with cosmetic dentistry; however, this is not always the case. Because they are seen as necessary, restorative operations are often included in the coverage provided by most dental insurance policies. If you choose to have an elective procedure only for aesthetic reasons, your insurance company may deny your claim.

At the same time, restorative techniques are frequently utilized when cosmetic dentistry is being performed. For instance, you may have a dental implant to enhance the look of your smile while simultaneously restoring the function of your teeth. This is possible because of modern dental technology. This is a technique that is typically classified as restorative, rather than aesthetic, but there are some exceptions at your Summerlin Dental office.

Checking to see what precise treatments are necessary for your cosmetic dental treatment is always a smart idea. After that, verify with your insurance provider to see whether these dental procedures are going to be covered by your policy.

How can I locate an experienced cosmetic dentist in my area?

When searching for a cosmetic dentist, here are a few important considerations to bear in mind:

. A cosmetic dentist needs to be forthright about the procedures they provide and the prices they charge.

Take careful notice of the amount of time that the dentist spends on procedures that are related to aesthetic dentistry. Because this is a process that requires care and accuracy, a dentist who works too quickly may be more likely to make mistakes when doing the operation. Since the task demands care and precision, the procedure itself requires care and precision. At your Summerlin Dental office we are willing to devote a greater amount of time to these dental treatments.

Ask us at your Summerlin Dental office about the availability of photographic documentation of prior patients. Ask for before-and-after images. Most dental practices will show at least a few photographs for patients to look over. When it comes to providing treatments related to aesthetic dentistry, this provides you with a sense of how good our dental work actually is.

Make an appointment at your Summerlin Dental office for a consultation with a dentist who will meet your needs. We will take enough time during the appointment to learn about the problems you are experiencing with your smile so that we can devise an appropriate treatment strategy for you. We will treat you with care, maintain a professional demeanor, and pay close attention to what you have to say.

We will go above and beyond to make sure that our new patients are as relaxed as possible, which is something that may be very helpful for patients who suffer from anxiety.

Do you find that smiling makes you uncomfortable? Do you want to enhance the overall look of your teeth? A refreshed and more attractive smile is within reach for anybody who seeks the assistance of a qualified dentist such as Summerlin Dental Solutions.

Come see us right away at your Summerlin Dental office to have your appointment scheduled, and you'll be one step closer to having a smile that you'll be proud to show off to others.

In this article, we discuss and respond to the questions that are asked the most commonly concerning dental insurance coverage in the United States.

Dental insurance is often difficult to understand. We realize you've had questions. We've got answers. Let us at Summerlin Dental Solutions simplify things for you, shall we?

Insurance basics: Common questions

How does one go about getting dental insurance?

Just as with any other type of insurance, you will be required to pay a monthly payment that will vary according to the insurance provider, the region in which you live, and the coverage you choose. Because dental treatment is typically not covered, if at all, by public health insurance, most of the dental care is typically paid by private insurance.

Dental insurance is sometimes contingent on the dentists that you choose as well as the amount that you can pay. You are eligible for one of these plans if you already have a dentist who is a member of an insurance network and if you choose to use that dentist. Even if your dentist is not part of the network, you will still be covered by the insurance; however, you will be responsible for paying a larger portion of the bill out of cash. Even if you don't already have a dentist, you are free to seek treatment from any of the dentists who participate in the plan's network.

Before any dental work may be performed, the waiting time that is imposed by most dental insurance carriers is normally between six months and a year. Since cosmetic care operations are not considered to be essential to one's health, most insurance policies do not include coverage for them.

Check out our comprehensive guide right here.

How much does dental insurance cost?

Although it may be purchased for as little as $15 per month, dental insurance typically costs approximately $50 per month for the majority of consumers. The price is often determined by the type of protection you require as well as the state in which you reside.

The majority of plans impose a cap on the amount of coverage you may receive each year. The maximum benefit that will be paid out by dental insurance is often between between $1000 and $2000. Your dental insurance will no longer provide any coverage after you have reached the yearly maximum limit. Any further dental treatment that has to be done will require that you pay for it out of pocket.

It is quite unlikely that you will make full use of your yearly coverage unless you are planning on getting extensive dental work done, such as a root canal or a crown. In point of fact, just roughly 4 percent of people in the United States use all of their available benefits.

What are the benefits of purchasing dental insurance?

The cost of dental care can be rather high, particularly if it is paid for out of pocket. However, dental care is not something you can miss out on because of how important it is to your overall health.

Because the majority of dental insurance policies cover a significant portion of your operations, receiving dental care your Summerlin Dental Office is now within the financial reach of individuals as well as families. An advantage that is available to you right now is that your service provider will pay in full for the two visits to the dentist that you make every year.

Even if your teeth are in good health, it is still important to visit your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings even if you have dental insurance. Spending less money on preventative treatment can save a significant amount of money that otherwise would have to be spent on more expensive operations in the future.

Who in their right mind needs dental insurance?

If you are able to pay a substantial payment out of pocket for necessary dental care, then you do not need dental insurance your Summerlin Dental Office. Dental insurance is mandatory for everyone else. You are still better off with insurance, even though it is possible that you will not reach your yearly limit. If you are of advanced age or if you believe that you have a larger likelihood of developing dental problems, then dental insurance may be something that you should look into.

What exactly does it mean to have dental indemnity insurance?

There is a form of insurance known as dental indemnity insurance that reimburses you for your medical expenses after you have seen the dentist and paid the consultation fee in full. In this scenario, you start by going to the dentist, then you pay for the service, and finally, you file a claim with your insurance carrier. After that, you will receive a reimbursement from your insurance for a portion of the charge.

CLICK HERE TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT !

If you already have a dentist that you like or if you want access to a wide range of other providers, this is the perfect plan for you. It's possible that the yearly coverage limit is larger, but the monthly premiums often are, too, especially when compared to comparable plans.

What does it mean to have a charge schedule plan?

A fee schedule is a list of rates that every dentist keeps, which details how much they charge for each service they perform and may be requested during initial consultation. The list also shows the amount that will be paid for by your dental insurance. The timetable shifts and changes based on the provisions that are deemed acceptable by the insurance company as well as the fees that are charged by the dentist.

The "usual, customary, and reasonable" pricing that insurance companies want to establish for a procedure is frequently what controls the fee schedule plan. UCR stands for "usual, customary, and reasonable." The UCR is often somewhere towards the middle of the price range that other service providers in the region provide.

Different Kinds of Insurance

What kinds of expenses are covered by Medicaid?

All children and young adults under the age of 21 who are enrolled in Medicaid are eligible to receive dental care benefits. This is one of the advantages that are included in what is known as the "early and periodic screening, diagnostic, and treatment" (EPSDT) benefit package. The provision of preventative dental care, in addition to the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases, is included among the dental services that are covered.

CLICK HERE TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT !

The dental benefits that are provided to people under Medicaid are determined by the states. The majority of states only provide basic dental treatment in the event of an emergency, and relatively few of them give full coverage.

image1-Copy-300x245

What kinds of expenses are covered by Medicare?

Like Medicaid, Medicare does not cover dental operations. However, it only provides a restricted scope of care that is necessary to preserve overall health or it is included as part of another Medicare-covered medical treatment plan. For instance, Medicare could pay for any further dental care you need after you've undergone jaw surgery.

After the first dental treatment has been completed, any subsequent dental care that may be necessary will not be covered by the insurer.

Which company offers the most comprehensive dental coverage in the United States?

There is no shortage of dental insurance companies in our nation; however, just because one plan is suitable for you does not mean that it will be suitable for everyone else. The following are some of the companies that offer dental insurance:

Cigna

UnitedHealthOne

Humana

Delta Dental

Ameritas

It is in your best interest to evaluate many different dental insurance plans before settling on a single provider of dental coverage. This will allow you to choose the policy that meets your requirements while remaining within your price range your Summerlin Dental Office.

What kinds of dental treatments are often paid for by dental insurance?

The majority of health insurance policies include coverage for some type of preventative care, often in the form of two annual exams and cleanings. Other dental operations, such as those listed below, could also be covered by your insurance:

Fillings

Crowns, implants, and bridges are all available.

Root canal procedures

Procedures categorized as an emergency, such as oral surgery

X-rays

Surgical removal of teeth

How much will be covered by your insurance?

The extent to which each of these services is provided will be determined by the package that you select. While some important operations, including as fillings, may require additional dollars to be paid out of pocket, preventive care is typically fully covered by insurance companies.

What does "in-network" mean?

Dentists who are members of an insurance company's in-network provider group are able to give their patients with dental care at reduced rates since they collaborate with the insurance provider. Using a dentist that participates in your insurance network will ensure that you are always covered by your insurance and that you will pay a lower out-of-pocket cost for their services.

When you receive dental treatment, you will have access to additional coverage and pay a lower portion of the total cost out of pocket.

However, you will find fewer dentists from whom to choose, so be prepared to deal with this limitation. There is a possibility that the dentists in the network will not always be able to meet all of your requirements.

What exactly is PPO? What exactly is a DHMO?

Customers of a dental care plan known as a preferred provider organization, sometimes abbreviated as PPOs, have the option of selecting their own dentist from among a group of recommended dental providers.

These service providers often provide their services at discounted rates within the confines of a maximum yearly cap. Some PPOs give you the freedom to select a dentist who is not part of their network, and they can even give you a discount once you've used up all of your yearly coverage.

Dental HMO insurance functions in the same way that PPO coverage does, with the exception that participating dentists agree to charge fixed fees for their services. A predetermined amount is handed out on a monthly basis to each of the participating dentists. Although DHMO is most commonly utilized by companies to provide coverage for their employees, it is also available to individuals. When compared to other types of dental insurance policies, DHMOs often provide more affordable premiums, which is one of its many advantages.

There are three primary categories of insurance policies.

CLICK HERE TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT !

How can I make the most of the advantages I am eligible for?

You will get the greatest value out of your insurance if you take the time to select the plan that is tailored specifically to your requirements. Whether you have an HMO or a PPO, once you find a plan that works for you, staying in-network will provide the greatest coverage possible for your medical expenses. If you go to a provider who is not part of your network, you will have to pay a higher out-of-pocket cost. You and your dentist can also coordinate the timing of your dental operations so that you do not go over the maximum number of visits permitted in a year.

If I have insurance, will all providers take it?

If the treatments being provided are covered by the plan, dentists who are part of your insurance network will acknowledge and accept your coverage. However, if the dental office is not part of your insurance provider's network, they could not take your dental insurance cover. If they do, your insurance will consider them to be outside of their network, and you will be responsible for the remaining balance of the cost in almost all circumstances.

How can I locate a dentist in my area that participates on my insurance plan?

Check with your insurance carrier; they should normally be able to give you with a list of dentists who are part of their network. You may also use Opencare to discover a dentist who accepts your insurance or call the dental office to find out which insurance providers they work with. Other options include calling the dental clinic directly.

What aspects of dental care are covered by dental insurance?

How can I estimate how much money I will need to pay for my dental treatments?

When you call to schedule your dental appointment, you may inquire about receiving an estimate of the total cost of the procedures from your dentist. Before initiating dental treatments, there are certain insurance companies that need you to submit a treatment plan to them beforehand. This proposal will assist your insurer in determining whether or not the services are covered, the maximum amount of coverage you are eligible to receive, and whether or not you will be required to pay for any additional costs out of pocket.

How can I find out which dental procedures are covered by my insurance?

Your Summerlin Dental office has the ability to submit a request for a pre-estimate or pre-determination to the insurance company in order to find out what aspects of the claim the insurance will cover and what aspects it will not cover. In order to facilitate the scheduling of your dental appointment, the preliminary estimate will also inform you of the amount that they will cover. You should always advocate getting a pre-estimate for anything that isn't important, including anything. After you have scheduled an appointment with your dentist, you should then either give the practice a call or email the insurance company a predetermination or pre-estimate. A pre-estimate, on the other hand, is not a guarantee that the insurance company will pay for everything that is included in the pre-estimate.

My insurance was accepted at the office; thus, why do I still have a balance to pay?

This might be due to any one of a number of possible factors. First, it's possible that you've reached the limit for the year. You may have gone with a dentist who is not part of the insurance provider's network, or the services could have been declined (insurance determines the service not necessary). You are free to follow up with the insurance company on your own and contest the treatment that was not covered if you have been told that you will not be receiving treatment.

I was wondering why I hadn't received my free cleaning.

Although we mention that insurance covers two cleanings per year, this does not mean that they are completely free. Once you've reached your yearly limit, your insurance company is no longer obligated to pay for any more treatments, even if you are qualified to get them. This maximum is typically between one thousand and one thousand five hundred dollars (USD) every year. On the other hand, several plans will expressly state that diagnostic and preventative treatment are not included in the total cost and will not be factored into the maximum. In each of these scenarios, you would still be entitled to the two complimentary cleanings.

How can I check the remaining money on my yearly limit for my dental insurance?

Do you know the maximum amount that your yearly insurance will cover? If you do, you'll be able to figure out the gap between what you've already spent and the maximum amount allowed for the year. Contacting your insurance provider is the best approach to obtain precise information, since they will be able to tell you how much of your yearly allotment you have remaining as well as how much you've already used up.

What if my general dentist suggested that I see a specialist? Will that visit be covered?

There is a possibility that your plan will cover a selection of specialized services. Your dental care plan, your dental insurer, and the circumstances surrounding your referral all play a role in determining whether or not you will be covered for your dental care. However, if you go above the yearly restrictions that your policy allows, it's possible that you won't be protected anymore. If the specialist is not part of your insurance company's network, you may additionally be required to pay a higher copayment.

Canker sores and cold sores are two types of sores.

Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, are sometimes mistaken for cold sores, despite the fact that they are entirely distinct. Essentially, a canker sore is an ulcer that forms on the interior of the mouth. A cold sore is a viral illness that presents as a tiny fluid-filled blister on the exterior of the mouth, generally the lips. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus. A cold sore, in contrast to a canker sore, is caused by the herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and can be readily disseminated if left untreated for a long period of time. A canker sore is more of an unpleasant inconvenience that can be ignored for a short period of time.

Canker sores are one of the most prevalent types of mouth sores that people experience. Although most people who have canker sores do so only occasionally, between 20 percent to 30 percent of those who do have canker sores endure repeated outbreaks. Occasionally, you may notice that a canker sore appears three or four times a year and lasts for around one week. Complex canker sores are bigger and more painful than simple canker sores, and they can continue for up to a month. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS IT IS WISE TO CALL YOUR SUMMERLIN DENTAL OFFICE!!

T4-300x200 (1)

Canker Sores Have a Variety of Causes

A canker sore can be caused by a variety of factors,

  1. hormonal fluctuations
  2. stress
  3. physical oral damage.
  4. caused by certain meals, such as citrus fruits.
  5. Vitamin shortages, such as those in vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, and zinc, might significantly exacerbate the condition in some cases.

Canker Sores Symptoms and Signs

Canker sores are little sores that develop on the soft tissues of the mouth and gums. They are round or oval in shape, with red rims and a white or somewhat yellow center, depending on the variety. You may experience a burning or tingling feeling prior to the commencement of the condition. Another symptom is a stinging discomfort, which is particularly noticeable when you speak or eat.

Canker Sores: What to Do If You Have Them

Using salt water or a baking soda and water mixture to rinse your mouth will aid in the treatment of canker sores. Alternatively, a tiny quantity of milk of magnesia can be applied straight to the wound. It is possible to repeat one of these approaches numerous times every day.

If your symptoms continue more than two weeks, worsen when you use home treatments, recur more than once a year, or are severe, you should schedule an appointment with your Summerlin Dental office dentist. It is important to get medical assistance if you have canker sores along with other symptoms such as a headache, fever, diarrhea, or a skin rash. Symptomatic relief, inflammation reduction, and prevention of secondary consequences, such as bacterial infection, are the goals of canker sore treatment at your Summerlin Dental Office. The fact that you have ulcers now does not ensure that you will not acquire them in the future.

A steroid mouth rinse, anesthetics, or antibiotics to minimize inflammatory irritation may be administered to treat the infection and relieve pain, depending on the severity.

Canker Sores Treatment and Prevention

Canker sores, in general, are difficult to foresee and to avoid developing. Fortunately, once they've appeared, there are steps that can be taken to prevent the situation from getting worse. Try to keep your canker sores from coming into touch with anything. Make sure you don't constantly brush them with your tongue and be cautious when you clean your teeth. Foods and beverages that are spicy, fiery, or acidic should be avoided. Also, avoid eating foods with sharp edges, such as chips.

Cold sores are a type of sore.

Leukoplakia

The condition of leukoplakia should be addressed carefully. While the vast majority of leukoplakia cases are noncancerous, there are some that are precancerous in nature.

The causes of leukoplakia are as follows:

IMG_9951.jpgWHITE-TONGUE-300x200
  1. Chewing tobacco and smoking for an extended period of time
  2. Poorly fitted dentures,
  3. HIV or AIDS
  4. sun exposure to the lips has been implicated as potential causes of leukoplakia in the past.
  5. In rare instances, oral cancer and leukoplakia might be linked together as well.

Manifestations of Leukoplakia

The most common symptom of leukoplakia is the presence of thick, white spots in your mouth that are difficult to remove. These patches can be flat or irregularly shaped, and they tend to harden and thicken with time. If the condition is severe, you may suffer slight discomfort when swallowing food. It is possible to develop red lesions (erythroplakia). Red lesions on the leukoplakia are more likely to be malignant or precancerous than white lesions.

Treatments for Leukoplakia are available.

Anyone who has been diagnosed with leukoplakia should discontinue using tobacco products soon after receiving the diagnosis. Depending on whether your leukoplakia is caused by ill-fitting dentures, a rough tooth, or an uneven filling surface, a dentist may be able to correct the problem for you easily. If your leukoplakia is caused by a compromised immune system, you may be offered antiviral drugs or topical therapies to help alleviate the symptoms of your condition.

It is critical that your Summerlin dentist or doctor do a biopsy on your leukoplakia in order to rule out the possibility of malignancy. It will be removed by oral surgery if it is deemed necessary.

Preventing Leukoplakia is important.

Once you have experienced leukoplakia, it is possible that it may recur. We recommend that you schedule a follow-up consultation with your physician and dentist.

One of the most effective strategies to avoid leukoplakia is to stop using tobacco and smoking altogether. Practicing basic dental hygiene can go a long way toward preventing leukoplakia from developing. Another suggestion is to limit your intake of alcoholic beverages and consume foods that are high in antioxidants.

This form of dentistry service is geared toward assisting individuals who are in desperate need of dental remedies on short notice. Some of the services that may be necessary include extractions, infection management, and even emergency surgical operations in some circumstances.

What exactly qualifies as a dental emergency?

According to the American Family Physician, an estimated 22 percent of the population in the United States suffers from mouth discomfort at least once per six-month period.

Oral health concerns might go undetected if you don't go to the dentist

There are several situations in which a problem is not deemed an emergency. In some instances, an emergency dental care facility may be unable to assist you. In order to accommodate patients who, require emergency care immediately upon arrival, these institutions often reserve their available spaces for patients who require emergency treatment immediately upon arrival at the facility.

Depending on how the tooth was lost, serious symptoms like as bleeding, pain, and inflammation may be experienced. In some situations, a dentist must intervene to stop the bleeding from continuing. There are certain cases in which the tooth can be preserved, but only if the condition is addressed as soon as possible.
  2. Another case that typically necessitates the use of emergency dental services is when a person experiences severe oral discomfort. There are a variety of factors that might contribute to significant discomfort in the oral cavity. Even more reason to seek treatment at an emergency dental clinic if the discomfort is accompanied by bleeding in the mouth.
  3.  Another reason to see a dental clinic that provides emergency treatment is the possibility of infection. When an infection results in the development of an abscess, the situation can occasionally become life-threatening. These are only three examples of situations in which emergency assistance is required. Anyone who has a dental condition that requires immediate care should be considered a candidate for this sort of dentistry. If you're not sure whether or not your situation qualifies as an emergency, reaching out to a clinic that provides emergency treatment might be beneficial.

Is it necessary to go to the ER if I have a dental emergency?

Unless the condition is severe, the emergency room at the local hospital will not be able to assist with typical dental problems. The distinction between when it is acceptable to go to the ER and when a visit to a dental emergency clinic would be a better alternative is critical to understanding.

The dentist will almost always be able to supply you with a medication that can alleviate your discomfort. During the examination, the dentist will need to assess the severity of the problem.

The Secret to Fresh Breath

April 27, 2022
fresh breath

We've all had to battle with achieving fresh breath at some point. There are individuals who have it around you, and whether you like it or not, you have had it yourself. It may be humiliating and unpleasant, but how can you tell if you have it and what to do about it? There is a simple test you may do to determine whether or not you have foul breath.

After thoroughly washing your hands, insert your index finger into the back of your mouth. Scrape a little amount of saliva off the back of your tongue, then dab it on the back of your hand to disinfect it. Wait one minute, then place your hand near your nose and take a deep breath. Is it still as fresh as a daisy or has it gone bad? Alternatively, do you need to continue reading to understand how to freshen your breath?

Why Do People Not Have Fresh Breath?

There are a variety of factors that contribute to poor breath. Knowing the reasons of foul breath is a good first step toward finding a solution.

  • Bacteria in your mouth: Bacteria always can be found in your mouth. It covers your gums, hides between your teeth, and dangles from your tongue like a dangling carrot. As it grows, it creates chemicals that cause the foul odor in your mouth to become more prominent.
  • Your bad habits: If you smoke cigarettes, use a pipe, smoke cigars, or chew tobacco, you are not only damaging your mouth and body, but you are also producing some very stinky breath as well.
  • Tonsils: If you still have your tonsils, they may be the source of your foul breath.. Because they are pitted, odorous things may gather in the pits and cause foul breath to develop.
  • Stomach problems: A stomach infection, ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other stomach problems might be causing your foul breath. A very low-carb diet might lead your body to enter a condition of ketosis, which is characterized by extremely foul breath.
  • You will be remembered by the things you eat: Garlic, onion, and other pungent foods will linger on your breath.

Tips for Getting Rid of Nasty Breath

It is not difficult to get fresh breath, but it does need a little amount of effort. For fresh breath and a healthier mouth, follow these suggestions.

  • Every meal should be followed by a thorough tooth brushing to achieve fresh breath. You may also purchase a tongue scraper, which you can use a couple of times each day to remove any germs that has accumulated on your tongue.
  • Floss once a day to eliminate food particles and plaque that have accumulated between your teeth. Your mouth will be grateful to you.
  • Bad breath may be eliminated by gargling with a specific mouthwash to get fresh breath. The oxygen in it will destroy the germs in your mouth that is causing your bad breath, and you will smell as fresh as a daisy as a result.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth from becoming dry, which is a typical source of foul breath.
  • Antacids and other medicines might help to relieve your stomach discomfort. Ginger tea is an excellent stomach relaxant.
  • Xylitol-containing chewing gum is recommended fo fresh breath. In addition, chewing gum stimulates salivation. Saliva is important for maintaining oral health. Bad breath, you've been banished!
Consume yogurt. It includes "good" bacteria that helps to maintain a healthy intestinal environment as well as a healthier mouth.
  • Soothe your sinuses with this. When you have a sinus infection, your not fresh breath might smell awful. Rather than the post-nasal drip itself, it is this that is responsible for the bad stench. If you can get rid of the illness, your breath will improve.
  • Avoid any tobacco products at all costs (cigarettes, pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and snuff).
A nutritious diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains is recommended.

And don't forget! Get regular dental checkups at Summerlin Dental Solutions. Give us a call today to schedule your appointment with Dr. Cohan at Summerlin Dental Solutions in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Make Every Day Earth Day

April 20, 2022
earth day

Earth Day was established in 1970 as a way to improve public awareness of the environment. What started as a single day in April is now celebrated across the globe as a way to draw attention to and educate people about global environmental challenges, including climate change. Natural resource conservation, water and air pollution reduction, and the development of green technology are all examples of ways we can make our environment better.

Reduce, recycle, and reuse to help on Earth Day!

By simply minimizing the quantity of waste that ends up in landfills, you can make a difference on Earth Day in the most straightforward manner possible. Many municipalities offer recycling programs for paper, plastic, and metal waste that are available to residents. In order to keep recyclable products out of landfills, we must first minimize the demand for additional disposal space, and then lower the amount of energy required to burn the garbage that remains. Recycling goods also contributes to the conservation of resources that are utilized in the manufacture of new items.

Reducing your usage of a wide range of ordinary items may help you save money. Single-use water bottles may be recycled, but the process is time-consuming and expensive. By conserving your financial resources, you may save money by drinking filtered faucet water. Disposable paper towels may potentially be a source of environmental pollution. Reusable cleaning cloths should be used for the bulk of your household duties.

Reusing goods helps to preserve both the environment and your money at the same time. Many items may be reused to generate a new one, which can save money on manufacturing costs. It is possible to repurpose old furniture to create a new piece. Old clothes may be used for a variety of crafts. If you are unable to find a method to repurpose your old belongings, consider donating them to a charitable organization. Remember to keep up the good work you're doing to protect the environment on a daily basis.

There are a variety of other things you may do to help the environment.

Everyone, regardless of age, may discover methods to contribute to the improvement of the environment. Some suggestions are as follows:

earth day
  • Trees are being planted.
  • Picking up rubbish is a necessary task.
  • lowering the amount of energy used
  • Walking, biking, or carpooling to work or school are all viable options.
  • Hazardous garbage should be disposed of correctly.
  • Rain barrels are being used to preserve water for plants.

Earth Day is intended to raise awareness of and appreciation for the earth's overall health. Maintaining the health of the environment is crucial but maintaining the health of your tongue is as important. Dental health is important for your entire health and well-being, so contact our staff at Summerlin Dental Solutions to book an appointment as soon as possible. How Tooth-Colored Fillings Improve Your Smile

April 13, 2022
fillings

When compared to its predecessors from decades ago, today's crowns, veneers, and tooth-colored fillings are quite natural-looking. There was a time when dentists only used silver fillings in their patients' mouths. This substance is still used in fillings today, although composite fillings, which are tooth-colored, are the most prevalent kind of filling material. It is possible at Summerlin Dental Solutions to match the color of composite fillings to the hue of the tooth and even let light to pass through them, much like real enamel.

Composite Fillings in Las Vegas, Nevada

Composite fillings are excellent in a wide range of situations and applications. When a cavity is present, the most apparent explanation for this is that the cavity must be filled. This is a fantastic method for purportedly erasing the imperfections that were before. It's almost as if the hollow never existed in the first place.

Teeth may be reshaped using composite fillings, and the placement of composite fillings can help to reduce excessive tooth spacing. In the event of a diastema (a big gap between the two front teeth), composite material is a non-invasive and cost-effective treatment option that gives immediate effects, without the need for a second appointment. It may be used as a substitute to braces in certain cases.

fillings

Fluorosis is a disease that produces discoloration and defects in the enamel. Mottled enamel is a sign of fluorosis. Composite materials are the preferred material for concealing this problem.

Composite fillings are simple to install, pleasant to the sight, and simple to replace if they fail. A filler may be readily concealed with the right technique and the right composite material. In our modern world, where dental perfection is now the norm, this is the appearance that is most sought for.

Conclusion

Finally, with composite fillings, you may be certain that your smile is in excellent care. There are some fantastic materials available that are a near-perfect match to the look of natural tooth enamel in terms of aesthetics. Smile with assurance, knowing that no one will ever have to know. Summerlin Dental Solutions is committed to keeping your secret.

If you are in need of new composites or need to have your old amalgams replaced wiuth composites, give us a call today at Summerlin Dental Solutions in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Cohan will be able to evaluate you and see if composites are a good fit for you.

What Does It Mean to Whiten Teeth?

Products that whiten teeth are available in a wide variety of presentations and can be applied in a number of distinct manners. Lasers and tooth bleaching are two methods that can be used to remove surface and deeper stains from teeth. Surface stains can be removed using peroxides. Products that don't use bleach can only remove surface stains through a combination of physical and chemical processes. Whitening treatments that patients can do themselves at home are also available for those patients who favor a procedure that is slower but takes less time overall. Whitening your teeth can help brighten your pearly whites and achieve a more dazzling smile regardless of the treatment that you select.

Is There Danger Having A Bright Smile?
dentist

Your choice of teeth-whitening method will determine not only the level of pain and discomfort you experience, but also the degree to which your teeth are sensitive to sensitivity after the procedure. It will also depend on the quality of the bleaching products that will be used and how your teeth react while they are being treated. After a teeth whitening treatment, tooth sensitivity may occur in some patients; however, this condition is only temporary and should not cause any cause for alarm. During your consultation, Dr. Sands will take all of the necessary precautions to ensure that you have the most comfortable experience possible and to determine which treatment will be the most appropriate for your specific requirements.

Do You Think It Might Harm My Teeth?

Because of the proliferation of teeth whitening treatments, a growing number of individuals are concerned about the possibility that these procedures could harm their teeth. Thankfully, the majority of teeth whitening procedures do not result in any kind of irreversible damage to the tooth enamel or the structures of your teeth. Studies have shown that products containing at least 10 percent carbamide peroxide have very little to no effect on the surface of the tooth enamel and do not cause damage to fillings that are already in the mouth.

However, the American Dental Association (ADA) advises customers to visit their dentist first before considering teeth whitening as an option for improving their smile. Whitening one's teeth is considered by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) to be a dental service that, in order to reduce the risk of complications and ensure optimal results, should only be performed by trained dental professionals.

Oral hygiene is important. When it comes to ensuring that your whole body is healthy, keeping your oral health in check is essential. Staph and strep bacteria are produced by bacteria that normally reside in your mouth, and these bacteria may cause severe infections and illnesses.

Why Oral Hygiene is Important

When you practice proper oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, and consume a nutritious diet, you can reduce the likelihood of dangerous germs spreading from your mouth to other regions of your body. Protect your mouth and discover more about the relationship between dental hygiene and overall health in this article.

Until recently, tooth decay was more widespread than it is now, owing to a lack of regular dental care and a lack of study into the benefits of fluoride. Because to fluoridated water and fluoride-containing toothpastes, tooth decay has been considerably less of an issue in recent years.

Gum disease has surpassed tooth decay as the most common dental condition in today's modern world. Periodontal disease is on the increase among adults, mostly as a result of individuals failing to floss on a regular basis and then disregarding gum soreness and bleeding. Periodontitis, if left untreated, may result in inflammation that can spread to other regions of the body, causing health problems.

The Relationship Between Oral Health and Chronic Disease

Many experts think that infections associated with inflammation might cause systemic illness or worsen existing disorders. You should keep in mind that bacteria overgrowth in inflammatory gum tissue may enter the bloodstream via your eating activities, which is why it's so important to schedule an appointment with our Las Vegas clinic if you've been experiencing continuous gum irritation and inflammation.

Oral Hygiene in Las Vegas, Nevada

Taking good care of your teeth and gums on a daily basis may help prevent the beginnings of illness and spare you a lot of hassle in the future when it comes to your overall health. If you suspect that you may be displaying indications of periodontal disease, or if you see anything else that appears to be out of the ordinary, please call Dr. Marianne Cohan to arrange a consultation.

At Summerlin Dental Solutions, we want you to take an active role in your own health!

Go Green for St. Patrick’s Day

March 16, 2022
green

The color green is worn by millions of people on St. Patrick's Day, both in Las Vegas and across the world, to exhibit their festive attitude and prevent being pinched. Despite the fact that it is simple to put on a green shirt, wear a St. Patrick's Day button, or put on a pair of emerald-colored shoes on March 17, if you are an enthusiastic St. Patrick's Day supporter, you may want to do something new this year. Dr. Marianne Cohan has come up with a few suggestions to help you take your Christmas enthusiasm to the next level, including:

Take a stroll along Chicago's Green River.

If you chance to be in or near Chicago on St. Patrick's Day, or if you're thinking about visiting, don't miss out on coming downtown to see the large-scale celebration that begins when the city colors the Chicago River a vibrant shade of green. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the city has been commemorating the occasion with this custom for more than 50 years, with tens of thousands of people attending each year to watch the strange dying process and the spectacular conclusion.

Green Face Paint by Don Green

You may use green face paints to demonstrate your love for this event in the same way that an ardent sports fan would on game day. Only use paints that are particularly designed to be applied to the skin to avoid breakouts or allergic reactions. Because a little amount of face paint can cover a wide area, feel free to be creative and deck out the whole family for St. Patrick's Day celebrations!

Consume plenty of vegetables throughout the day.

Are green eggs and ham not your thing? Because of the growing popularity of green smoothies, there's never been a better time to get in on the health-conscious trend. To prepare a green smoothie without the use of food coloring, just combine a substantial quantity of a leafy green vegetable, such as spinach or kale, with the other components that you would normally use to make a smoothie, such as fruit, ice, milk, or juice, until completely smooth.

Use those same veggies to make a green soup, egg salad, or a batch of bright green pastries throughout the day to keep the trend continuing throughout the day. Additional benefits include receiving a good dosage of vitamins without having to sacrifice the flavor of most of these items.

If your traditional holiday routine has become monotonous, put your green T-shirt away and try one or more of the suggestions below. Don't be shocked if you have so much fun that you decide to make it an annual ritual to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! From your local dentist near you at Summerlin Dental Solutions, we wish you a happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Five (5) Reasons for Your Bad Breath

March 9, 2022
five-reasons-for-bad-breath_45537049

Bad breath, often known as halitosis, is most likely not a life or death situation. However, it has the potential to make you feel self-conscious and have a detrimental influence on your quality of life. The majority of individuals who suffer from bad breath are coping with bacterial infections in their mouths. There are, however, additional factors that contribute to this awkward situation. Educating yourself on the subject may assist you in combating this manageable issue.

Here are five reasons why you have embarrassingly bad breath.
bad breath
  • Mouth feeling dry. A reduction in saliva flow may be caused by a number of different factors. The majority of the time, medicine or mouth breathing is to blame. Saliva helps to prevent bad breath by washing away food particles from your mouth and oral cavity. The condition of dry mouth may be alleviated by increasing salivation.
  • Gum disease is associated with poor oral hygiene. Gum disease may develop as a result of improper brushing and flossing techniques or insufficient frequency of brushing and flossing. If you have bad breath, it might be a symptom that you have plaque on your teeth.
  • Bad Breath Caused by Eating Too Much. Food particles that are not removed by brushing or flossing attract germs, which results in foul breath. Following the consumption of pungent-smelling meals such as garlic or onions, it is extremely vital to wash your teeth.
  • Tobacco and smoking are two of the most harmful habits a person can have. Tobacco is terrible for your health in general, and it is especially detrimental for your dental health. The use of tobacco products, such as cigarettes and gum, may lead to the development of gum disease and oral cancer.
  • Infections of the mouth and other medical problems. Your poor breath may be caused by a mouth infection, sinus infection, or even the common cold for a short period of time. Even medical disorders such as diabetes and GERD may result in bad breath. It's always a good idea to consult with Dr. Marianne Cohan to establish the root of the problem.

We are here to help you.

Even if you practice proper oral hygiene, it's vital to schedule an appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan at our Las Vegas office to deal with or prevent complications associated with chronic bad breath. We can assist you in determining the source of your halitosis as well as provide treatments that will enable you to experience fresh breath without the usage of mints or other breath freshening products. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DENTAL CROWN OR VENEER COMES OFF? CALL THE BEST DENTIST IN SUMMERLIN

March 6, 2022

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DENTAL CROWN OR VENEER COMES OFF?

CALL THE BEST DENTIST IN SUMMERLIN

dental crown

One of the most popular ways to protect a seriously fractured or decaying tooth is with a dental crown. Crowns have a high success rate because of the diversity of materials utilized in their construction, but they can come off at any time. Don't be alarmed if your dental crowns in Las Vegas have come loose or come off. Call the best dentist in Summerlin and we will explain how to deal with this dental emergency.

What are Dental Crowns and How Do They Work?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that are placed on top of fractured, decayed or otherwise damaged teeth. They fully surround the damaged tooth and are secured in place using special dental cement. Metal, porcelain, and zirconia are among the materials that may be used to make them. Your crowns are created to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth and to fit in with your smile.

What Should I Do If Mine Breaks?

Make an appointment with your dentist right away. They will try their utmost to see you within 24 hours because a missing crown is considered a dental emergency. Meanwhile, stay away from sugary, acidic, cold and hard foods.

If you still have the crown, use toothpaste or a temporary dental glue to reattach it to the damaged tooth. Until you can visit your dentist, this will help safeguard the fragile tooth.

If you lose your crown, notify your Summerlin Dental office right away. To avoid any pain and a worsened condition, they will see you as soon as feasible. Keep the exposed tooth clean and, if necessary, take over-the-counter pain relievers.

What Causes Crowns to Come Off?

While it is impossible to prevent the loss of a dental crown entirely, there are several frequent issues to consider.

Deterioration of the natural tooth enclosed beneath the prosthetic crown: While the prosthetic crown cannot rot, the natural tooth encased beneath it can. The dental cement is frequently broken down around the gum line where the crown and teeth connect.

Deteriorating dental cement: This cement might degrade over time due to tooth disease or just the passage of time, causing your crowns to loosen.

Sticky and sweet foods: While the odd sticky pleasure may not hurt your teeth, daily consumption of toffees or caramels will. Sweets tug at your crowns, weakening them over time. When a crown becomes attached on a sticky treat, it might completely fall off.

Dental crowns are critical for safeguarding the fragile teeth beneath them. They, like any other dental repair, require special attention in order to perform effectively. If you believe your crowns are at risk of coming loose, speak with your Summerlin Dental Office.

March is National Nutrition Month!

March 2, 2022
dental-healthy-foods

While there is no need to wait to start eating correctly, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has designated March as the month in which everyone should pay particular attention to what they put into their bodies. The Academy has designated the month of March as "National Nutrition Awareness Month" in order to raise awareness about what people consume.

What You Shouldn't Eat

Specifically, the Academy of Dentistry reminds out that the foods you consume have a direct impact on the health of your teeth and in particular on tooth decay. Bacteria depend on carbohydrates to survive and reproduce. That is why Dr. Marianne Cohan and our staff at Summerlin Dental Solutions advise our patients to limit their intake of candy and other sweets as much as possible. They are made up of simple carbohydrates that provide food for the bacteria in your mouth and contribute to tooth decay.

It's the hidden sugars, on the other hand, that will set you back. Make it a practice to check food labels and seek for goods that have been sweetened with added sugar. This covers components that have the suffix "ose" at the end of their names. When it comes to nutrition, these foods are mostly useful for feeding a sweet craving and not much more than that.

What You Should Consume

Turn to meals that are not only delicious but also beneficial to your dental health. Foods such as dairy products, for example, supply the body with nutrients that help to maintain tooth enamel. Protein-rich foods include phosphorus, which is a mineral that is essential for dental health.

You also can't go wrong by including a variety of colors in your daily diet. Fruits and vegetables make for a visually appealing dish as well as a nutritious dinner. When eating acidic fruits such as oranges or even tomatoes, exercise care since the acid may destroy tooth enamel over time. Instead of consuming these meals on their own, it is preferable to incorporate them in a meal as a side dish.

You should keep in mind that excellent nutrition is something you should be concerned about all year, not just during National Nutrition Month. A pleasant reminder that eating healthy is a proactive step in maintaining your oral health is provided by the month of March.

The Transformation of Valentine's Day

February 9, 2022

Did you know that the events that led to the establishment of Valentine's Day were really focused on the prevention of war? Against the instructions of Emperor Claudius II, a Catholic priest by the name of Valentine surreptitiously married young soldiers and their wives, even though the emperor had ruled it unlawful since only unmarried, young men were eligible to be sent to battle. To prevent prospective troops from joining his army and fighting in his battle, Claudius sought to hoard them by declaring marriage unlawful.

teeth_whitening_smile-300x212

Even after being excommunicated, Valentine continued to marry young couples and was finally put to death for it in 270 AD. Prior to his death, he wrote a letter to a hidden love, signing it "From your Valentine," and sent it. People are still using this method of signing letters and cards over 1,800 years after it was first. This year, continue the tradition that was began many years ago while adding your own personal touch. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Valentine's Day Ideas that are both simple and creative

  • Make a photo of it to remember it by. Images of couples shot around Christmas are common, but Valentine's Day photos enable you to capitalize on the romantic atmosphere. Julia Child and her husband, Paul, had their photo shot together every Valentine's Day, and they made sure to incorporate their sense of humor by including funny accessories in the picture.
  • Return to the location of your first date. No matter whether your first date together took place at a neighborhood hotdog stand, the emotional importance of the experience may make it a memorable element of your Valentine's Day itinerary. Try to be imaginative by creating a treasure hunt that will bring your lover back to the initial date spot, where you may demonstrate your affection with flowers or a present.
  • Messages "From Your Valentine" are common. Provide a unique manner to deliver your message in order to make this Valentine's Day stand out from the others. Alternatively, bake your spouse's favorite food and decorate it with a tube of icing, or write something on the steamed-up mirror so that it appears while your lover is taking a bath or a shower.

Despite the fact that Valentine's Day is a day to honor love, it does not have to be a unique occasion reserved only for couples. If you're single, take advantage of this special day to lavish yourself with affection, because you deserve it! After all, the priest Valentine had such a deep belief in the sanctity of love that he was prepared to put his life on the line to defend it. Valentine's Day is for everyone, regardless of whether you're in a relationship or single, young or old, romantic or not. SUMMERLIN DENTAL SOLUTIONS wishes you a very happy Valentine's Day.

How Do I Treat Dry Mouth Causes in Summerlin Dental Office and Las Vegas?

IMG_9930-DRY-MOUTH-300x267

What is dry xerostomia, and how does it affect you? Despite the fact that the average person has never heard of it, they have all dealt with it in one way or another. Basically, it's a euphemistic way of stating, "dry mouth." The inconvenience of having a dry mouth is something that everyone has experienced, but when the dryness persists, it becomes a very irritating problem. Dry mouth occurs when you do not have enough saliva to keep your mouth moist and lubricated, and your mouth becomes parched. Continue reading to learn about some of the causes of dry mouth, as well as some remedies for treating it.

What causes my mouth to be so dry, and how can I avoid it in the future?

If your mouth feels dry no matter what you do, your saliva glands aren't working properly. A variety of variables, including but not limited to the following, might contribute to this situation:

1: Stress or anxiousness are two terms that can be used to describe the same thing.

2: some medications

3: Chemotherapy or radiotherapy are both options.

4: Aging

5: Smoking

6: Sjorgren's syndrome is a kind of chronic fatigue syndrome (autoimmune illness)

Sjorgren’s Syndrome

Illness caused by an immune system reaction Sjorgren's syndrome is characterized by the presence of white blood cells that attack the salivary glands. The only way to deal with dry mouth is to attempt to treat the cause of the condition. Pay close attention to the causes outlined above and consult with your Summerlin dental office about your treatment choices.

Q: What causes dry mouth symptoms, and what are the signs and symptoms of dry mouth?

A: If you continue to have dry mouth, it is likely that your salivary glands are not producing enough saliva. Examine the following signs and symptoms of dry mouth so you'll be aware of what to look out for:

  1. Having difficulty chewing, swallowing, tasting, or speaking
  2. A sticky or drying sensation might be felt on the tongue and in the throat.
  3. It feels like your tongue is dry and harsh to the touch.
  4. You may have a burning feeling in your mouth.
  5. irritation of the gums
  6. Cracked lips are a problem.
  7. Tooth decay is a regular occurrence.
  8. Breathing difficulties

The following are the most common indications and symptoms to be on the lookout for. The earlier you recognize the signs and symptoms of dry mouth, the sooner you may begin treatment for the underlying condition that is causing them.

Q: What Can I Do to Relieve My Dry Mouth Problems?

A: If your prescription medication is causing you to have dry mouth, switching medications is a straightforward option. There are a variety of additional medications available that can aid your salivary glands in increasing their production of saliva. You may also take steps to lower your chances of experiencing dry mouth by doing the following:

  1. To be on the safe side, avoid caffeine at all costs.
  2. Keep your tongue wet when eating may be as easy as drinking enough of water or other sugar-free drinks throughout the meal.
  3. Sugarless gums should be chewed to enhance saliva flow.
  4. Tobacco and alcoholic beverages should be avoided at all costs.
  5. Avoid eating spicy or salty foods before bedtime, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
  6. Use a humidifier at night to keep the air moist.

Everyone has had dry mouth at some time in their lives, but don't let it interfere with your normal activities. Apply our causes, symptoms, and preventative recommendations to keep your mouth moist and healthy. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you should visit your dentist to determine what is causing the issue and how to resolve the situation.

Best Ways to Prevent Bad Breath

February 2, 2022
dental-womenshormones-300x199

There is nothing worse than having bad breath, and although it might be tough to determine if you have bad breath, it is always preferable to maintain excellent dental health rather than risk having a stinky mouth. When it comes to reducing or eliminating bad breath, there are several options available, some of which are far more effective and last longer than others. Take a look at the options available to you below.

Floss on a regular basis

Even though it might be tough to remember to floss on a daily basis, when it comes to bad breath, flossing is one of the simplest and most cost-effective methods to freshen your breath quickly and effectively. See, flossing helps to remove the plaque and germs that accumulate in parts of your mouth that a toothbrush can't reach, and it also helps to eliminate the odor connected with the bacteria. While flossing may not completely erase bad breath on its own, if done in conjunction with other good dental hygiene routines such as brushing, you may notice a noticeably fresher smelling mouth.

Mouthwash should be used.

Using a mouthwash may significantly improve the freshness of your breath, particularly if you notice that your breath is still smelling after brushing and flossing. There are many different mouthwash solutions available on the market; however, you may make your own by mixing baking soda with water and swishing it around in your mouth.

Always brush your teeth after sleeping.

When you get up in the morning, whether you've had a nap or a whole night of sleep, you'll likely want to clean your teeth in order to prevent bad breath. While you are asleep (even for a short period of time), bacteria builds in your mouth, which is ultimately the root of your foul breath, according to scientific evidence. So, the next time you wake up after a good night's sleep, give your mouth a thorough brushing and you will notice a significant improvement in the freshness of your breath.

There are a variety of options for freshening your breath that go beyond chewing gum or sucking on mints; the methods listed above are just a few suggestions for you to consider. Try them out and you'll most likely discover that your foul breath issue has been resolved, or at the very least much reduced. Naturally, you may always ask Dr. Marianne Cohan at your next appointment at our Summerlin dental office near you.

Ease up on your gums — don’t brush your teeth too hard!

January 26, 2022
ease-up-on-gums_68230868

Some dental customers approach their teeth with the same vigor as if they were polishing an old floor—that is, they work them much too hard! Too-hard brushing is perhaps the most frequent error patients make in their dental care regimen, and it may be harmful to the gums and teeth if not addressed immediately.

What kinds of problems can be caused by brushing too hard?

  • Gums that are receding
  • Bone loss in the area of the teeth
  • Teeth loss is a common occurrence.
  • Tooth sensitivity, particularly to extremes of heat and cold
  • Enamel that has become brittle

Overbrushing may cause your gums to recede and expose the neck of your teeth, which can cause pain and discomfort. Due to the fact that this portion of the tooth is not covered by hard enamel like the rest of the tooth, the soft inner layer, known as dentin, is exposed on this side. Dentin is very sensitive to heat and cold, and it is also significantly more prone to bacterial deterioration than other tissues. When the gums recede as a result of incorrect brushing, the condition is typically permanent.

Using the appropriate technique to clean your teeth

So you're already aware that you should wash your teeth twice a day, so why not do it correctly? First and foremost, unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Marianne Cohan, you should always brush using a soft bristled brush rather than a medium or hard bristled brush. In most cases, cleaning your teeth twice a day for two minutes is sufficient, unless you have braces or certain oral health conditions.

When you brush your teeth and gums, the primary goal is to eliminate plaque from your teeth and gums. Plaque is essentially a soft substance that is formed by the accumulation of germs, saliva, and food waste. It is not necessary to brush vigorously in order to eliminate plaque; instead, be sure to aim your toothbrush towards the gum line (where plaque tends to accumulate) and brush in tiny circular strokes, never in back and forth motions.

It's also a good idea to use a gentle touch while holding your toothbrush. People have a tendency to brush harder when they grip their toothbrush more tightly.

Are there any queries you still have concerning correct teeth brushing technique or gum health? Inquire with any member of our staff or Dr. Marianne Cohan on your next visit to our Las Vegas office near you; we'll be pleased to assist you!

Things You Should Know Before Getting an Oral Piercing

January 19, 2022
oral_piercing_xl_20807092

Is that anything you've been thinking about recently, having an oral piercing? Although they may seem attractive because they are fashionable or hip, it is important to be aware of the health hazards involved with oral piercing. Even if you already own one, you could learn something new about it.

Countless numbers of microorganisms live in the mouth of an adult person. In spite of the fact that individuals do not have piercings, it is not unusual for them to get an infection every now and then. By adding an oral piercing to your collection, you increase your chances of contracting an infection.

Having piercings causes many individuals to acquire the habit of touching them on a daily basis, which is equivalent to opening a door and saying, "Welcome home, infections!" In addition, since these piercings are located in your mouth, food particles from all of the food that passes through them might build and produce a significant health problem in the long run.

Because it is difficult to ignore the existence of an oral piercing, it is usual for people to bite or play with the site. Teeth fractures, on the other hand, might result from this practice. While a fracture may occur on the enamel of a tooth and be treated with a simple filling, it can also occur deeper in the tooth and necessitate the need for a root canal or even tooth extraction.

Other dangers include impaired speech and eating abilities, nerve damage, gum damage, and even a loss of taste as a result of the medication.

If you're still set on getting an oral piercing, at the very least be informed of the amount of time it will take to recover. In most cases, it takes between four and six weeks and causes significant pain at that period. Be prepared to give it that amount of time in order to reduce your chances of contracting an illness.

Information About Oral Piercings in Summerlin, NV

Make sure you realize that obtaining an oral piercing will need you to take on additional responsibilities in addition to your regular dental hygiene responsibilities. The need of frequent care on your end, not only during the healing process, cannot be overstated. Summerlin Dental Solutions can help give your teeth the extra care they need.

Teeth Protection and Winter Sports from Summerlin Dental Solutions

January 5, 2022
winter_sports

At Summerlin Dental Solutions, just because it’s cold out there doesn’t mean you’ll give up keeping fit and active! Winter is the season for some of our favorite team sporting activities, and when you’re donning your protective gear, don’t forget to protect your teeth as well.

  • Basketball

This sport actually tallies one of the highest counts of dental injuries. Running, jumping, and diving for the ball on an unforgiving court can lead to tooth and jaw injuries.  And for every ten men on the floor, it seems like there at least 50 flailing elbows in the paint.

  • Hockey

Notorious for the toll it takes on teeth, hockey is a game of sticks, ice, and whizzing pucks. And when your sport’s penalties include the terms hooking, slashing, and tripping, the more protection, the better.

  • Skiing

When you are flying down the slopes, combining powdery snow and speed, mouth protection is a good idea. This also applies to snowboarding and other snow sports.

  • Wrestling

Grappling and pinning in close quarters can lead to unintended injuries after accidental contact with the mat or your opponent.

Different uniforms, different equipment, and different playing fields, but all these sports have one thing in common—the easiest way to protect your teeth while playing them is with a mouth guard.

Mouthguards generally come in three forms:

  • Over the counter, ready-made appliances. These are available in drugstores and sporting goods stores, but might not be a comfortable fit as they are pre-formed sizes.
  • The “boil-and-bite” option is a mouthguard form placed in hot water. You then bite down to shape it to your mouth and teeth.
  • Custom mouthguards can be fabricated just for you through our Las Vegas office. These appliances are designed to fit your individual mouth and teeth, so provide a better fit and better protection. They are also usually more durable and more comfortable. If you wear braces, you definitely need a custom mouthguard to prevent an injury to your mouth or braces caused by an ill-fitting appliance.

Whether you play on a team or pursue individual athletic activities, keeping safe as you keep fit is your first priority. We would be happy to discuss your mouthguard options for any sport, any time of year.

Resolve to Eat Better in the New Year

December 29, 2021
better

Hello there from Summerlin Dental Solutions It’s a new year, and a resolution found on many lists is learning to be more mindful about healthy food choices. You might have set some of these goals yourself. Gaining, losing, or maintaining your current weight. More fruits and veggies. Better proteins. Less sugar. Fewer carbs. You want to make this new year your healthiest year yet.

And while you’re making your new and improved shopping list, don’t forget your oral health! Because while brushing and flossing are extremely important, your diet can also have very real benefits for your teeth and gums.

Stronger Teeth and Jaws

We often talk about teeth and bones together, and that’s natural. Calcium and phosphorus, as well as other minerals, make them the strongest parts of our bodies. When teeth lose mineral strength, they are more vulnerable to cavities, and bone loss in the jaw can cause loose or even lost teeth.

Making sure you get the recommended daily amount of the minerals and vitamins you need will help sustain and repair both teeth and bones. A diet rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D helps build strong bones and promotes bone density. While your teeth can’t create new enamel, minerals that are eroded by acids from plaque and acidic foods can be restored, or remineralized, with the calcium and phosphates in saliva.

  • Calcium

Strong teeth and bones need calcium. More than 99% of the calcium in our bodies is located in our teeth and bones. How to make sure we get enough?

Dairy products are the traditional answer. Several servings of milk, cheese, or yogurt each day supply most of our needs. If you can’t eat dairy, though, calcium is also found in other foods, such as salmon, sardines, many dark leafy vegetables, and fortified juices, tofu, and cereals.

  • Phosphorus

Calcium gets most of the attention when it comes to creating strong teeth and bones, but it’s not a solo act. We need phosphorus to make full use of the calcium in our diets.

Proteins like meat, fish, and poultry are good sources of phosphorus, as are beans, nuts, whole grains and dairy.

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a diet essential because it enables us to absorb the calcium and phosphorus that keep teeth and bones strong.

Most dairy and many other foods are fortified with vitamin D, such as cow’s milk, soymilk, orange juice, and cereals. Egg yolks and fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and herring, are also a rich natural source of the vitamin.

Healthy Gums

Gum disease is more than just a nuisance. Left untreated, gingivitis (early gum disease) can become periodontitis (serious gum disease). Periodontitis can cause infection, loose teeth, and tooth and bone loss.

Brushing and flossing promote gum health and help prevent gum disease, but your diet plays an important role, too.

  • Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for the health and healing of mucous membranes, including gum tissue and the soft membranes in the mouth.

You can get this vitamin directly from animal products such as dairy foods and meats, or it can be formed in the body from beta-carotenes. Think orange when you hit the produce aisle, because foods such as carrots, peppers, pumpkin, squash, and sweet potatoes are a rich source of beta-carotenes.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the so-called “essential nutrients.” These are the nutrients that are necessary for our bodies to function properly, and which can only be supplied in our diets. Vitamin C is vital for healthy gums and soft tissue—in fact, one sign that your diet is deficient in vitamin C is inflamed and bleeding gums.

Citrus fruits, those oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and all their cousins, are a wonderful source of vitamin C, but you have many other flavorful options. Fruits such as kiwis, mangos, papayas, and strawberries are rich in vitamin C. Step over to the vegetable aisle to load up on red peppers, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli—all of which contain more vitamin C per serving than a medium orange!

Fewer Cavities

Plaque thrives on a diet of sugar. Oral bacteria in plaque use the sugars in our food to produce acids. These acids erode enamel and eventually lead to cavities. Limiting your sugar consumption and choosing complex carbohydrates over simple carbs are two ways to reduce your risk of cavities.

  • Sugars

The usual suspects—candies, desserts, pastries, sodas—are sugar-filled items you’re familiar with. What might surprise you is the amount of sugar in sports drinks, fruit juices, flavored yogurts, breakfast cereals, and other standard grocery purchases. Checking labels for sugar content is a great way to cut down on unexpected sweeteners.

  • Carbs

The refined starches in white bread, white rice, potato chips, and other simpler carbohydrates quickly break down into sugars. This is the kind of nutrition only plaque appreciates.

Instead, fill your cart with complex carbohydrates, which contain important vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Found in foods like whole-grain breads and cereals, legumes, and many vegetables, complex carbs break down slowly for longer-lasting energy.

Of course, these suggestions don’t cover everything on your healthy dental shopping list. We could add magnesium for bone density, vitamin B to prevent oral irritation and inflammation, vitamin K for bone strength, and more. To find out the best options for your healthiest smile, talk to Dr. Marianne Cohan or a member of our Las Vegas team about ideas for improving your daily diet.

Better Options

Because besides leading to stronger teeth, healthier gums, and fewer cavities, a careful and conscious approach to your food choices has another wonderful benefit—a healthy dental diet is healthy for the rest of your body as well. Just something to be mindful of as we greet the new year!

Dental Veneers at Summerlin Dental Solutions

December 22, 2021
dental_veneers

If you want to fix staining, large gaps, fillings, chipped teeth, or the overall shape of your teeth, veneers may be the perfect option for you. Many of our patients opted for veneers and have never been more confident in their smile!

Dental veneers are made from long-lasting porcelain materials which cover the front and biting ends of each tooth. At your appointment, you can choose the shade of veneers to brighten up your smile. They are usually placed on the anterior, or front teeth, where the chewing forces are not as hard as in the back. Placing the veneers is easy, and the best part is: It requires only two appointments!

During the first appointment, we’ll take an impressions of your teeth. Then we send them to the lab to make your veneers. Veneers are fairly conservative in preparation because they require a small amount of space to be created on the front, bottom, and sides of each tooth for a natural appearance. You will leave the office with temporary veneers in place for a week or two while the permanent veneers are being made.

Your veneers will be placed during the second appointment, and you won’t believe the difference in your smile! If you’re interested in learning more, give Dr. Marianne Cohan a call at our Summerlin Dental office today!

How to Fix Gum Recession at Summerlin Dental Solutions

December 15, 2021
Amazing-smile-15-1-300x211

Do you have gum recession? Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed that your teeth looked longer? Does it seem like your gums are shrinking? This condition is called recession—many adults have it. Let’s look at some of the causes and what you can do about it.

During your exam at Summerlin Dental Solutions, we will take measurements to check for periodontal disease. Dental professionals take recession measurements to see how much attached gingiva is present. This is the kind of tissue that is most resilient to infection.

The more recession, the less attached gingiva. The less attached gingiva, the less bone support. The less bone support, the higher your chances of tooth loss. It is quite a domino effect.

Don’t lose hope. The effect can be halted once you know the cause of your recession.

Do you ever wake up with your jaw clenched, and/or a headache that originates just above your ears? Clenching or grinding your teeth can cause recession. When there is added stress on a tooth, it flexes at the gum line.

Over time this causes microscopic breaks in the enamel and then a notch appears. The gum line is forced to move away from its original position. If this is something you see in your mouth, we can discuss the possibility of an occlusal guard at your next visit.

receding gums

How do you brush your teeth? Do you brush in a straight line or circles? What kind of bristles do you use? Are the bristles on your toothbrush frayed?

When you brush in a circle, you are sweeping all along the gum line, removing the plaque from most angles. When you brush in a straight line, you may often miss the concave portion of the gums. This leaves plaque behind and leads to gingivitis. Whenever gingivitis occurs, the body attacks supporting structures like bone while trying to get rid of the infection. This is periodontal disease, which can cause recession.

Why are My gums Receding in Summerlin, NV

Recession may also result from an irritant on the gums, such as a bar from a partial denture or orthodontic appliance (braces).

Gums do not “grow back.” The most common treatment for advanced recession is a tissue graft. There are many different kinds of tissue grafts.

Other factors can cause recession. If you think recession is happening in your mouth, schedule an appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan to discuss your options, so you can make the appropriate treatment choice.

The Amazing Intraoral Cameras at Summerlin Dental Solutions

December 8, 2021
dental-womenshormones

Intraoral cameras. One of the greatest features our team at Summerlin Dental Solutions offers is the ability to see first-hand how we can help our patients. While X-rays help us detect any problems in your mouth and give us valuable information on what is bothering you, they often don’t give Dr. Marianne Cohan a complete view of everything that is going on inside your mouth. With the use of an intraoral camera, we can see every aspect of your teeth and mouth with incredible detail, uncovering cracked or fractured teeth, excessive wear, carious lesions, cavities, or other issues that may be hidden. We take those hi resolution images and put them on a 55 inch screen so you can see exactly what we see in your mouth. When we can discover oral problems early on, your treatment is much less invasive and often saves you money down the road.

An intraoral camera allows Dr. Marianne Cohan to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth, and gums and allows us to make an accurate diagnosis.  With clear, defined, enlarged images, Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team see details that standard mirror examinations may miss. It’s much easier to understand what is happening in your mouth if you can see the problem on a computer monitor, and it means faster diagnosis and less chair-time for our patients!

intraoral cmera

Intraoral cameras are small, about the size of a dental mirror, and emit a light onto the tooth. The tooth will emit a color that lets Dr. Marianne Cohan determine if the tooth is healthy or diseased. Intraoral cameras also allow us to save your images on our office computer to provide a permanent record of treatments. These treatments can be printed for you, other specialists, and your lab or insurance companies.

For any questions about the intraoral camera, we encourage you to ask Dr. Marianne Cohan or our team during your or your child’s next visit or by giving us a call at our convenient Summerlin Dental office.

‘Tis the Season—for Healthy Dental Choices!

December 1, 2021
dental

If you're racing through the snow to get to an emergency dental appointment, it's hard to be cheerful and healthy at this time of the year. And after a long holiday season, no one wants to begin their New Year's Resolutions with the words "Get Cavities Filled." How do you get through the most delicious of seasons with your enamel and fillings intact?

Normal people might consider candies and sweets to be bad, but we're not Scrooges around here! It's natural to want to indulge in a few treats over the holiday season, and we have some suggestions on how to do so guilt-free. But first and foremost, certain sweets are unquestionably more wicked than sweet. Which ones are more appropriate for use as table decorations rather than desserts?

  • Candies (candy canes)

If you've ever had a chipped or broken tooth as a result of inadvertently biting down on a piece of candy that was much harder than you anticipated, you know that extreme care should be used. We take our time with candy canes, allowing them to melt gently in our mouths as a result of this tendency. The disadvantage of this method, of course, is that we are now progressively bathing our teeth in sugar, which encourages the formation of plaque and cavity-causing germs.

Crushable sweets such as candy canes, peppermints, and other hard candies are possibly harmful to your teeth when you chew them, and they are certainly harmful if you allow them to dissolve slowly in your mouth.

  • Gumdrops

Gumdrops that are glistening and vibrant in color. They are one of the most adorable ways to decorate for the holidays, whether they are used to roof a gingerbread home, trim a gumdrop tree, or just sitting in a bowl. And when we say "sweet," we mean it in the literal sense of the word. The majority of gumdrops are composed mostly of corn syrup and sugar, which are then rolled in more sugar.

However, the fact that they are high in sugar is not the only issue. A sticky substance that adheres between our teeth and around our gums, this is sugar in an extra-gummy form.

  • Toffees, caramels, and taffy are all examples of sweets.

Despite the fact that they are packaged in attractive ribboned boxes, these incredibly sticky meals are not a treat for your teeth.

Chewy sweets not only attach to enamel, but they also stick to fillings, crowns (especially temporary crowns), orthodontic wires, and brackets. They are particularly bad for fillings. The last thing anybody wants is an unplanned dental or orthodontic appointment because their dental work has been damaged or displaced!

  • Houses made of gingerbread

No Christmas decoration is more festive than a gingerbread house, which is made of chewy, sticky gingerbread and topped with hard sugar frosting, candy canes, and peppermints. Wonderful for your home's interior design, but not so great for your oral health. If you're in the mood for something hot, eat one gingerbread guy and leave your architectural masterpiece alone.

dental
  • Fruitcake

If you're looking for a reason to say no to fruitcake, here's a good one: most fruitcake is bad for your teeth. Candied fruit is, well, candied, while dried fruit is sweet, sticky, and chewy in texture and consistency. Of course, there are delectable outliers, but even a delectable fruitcake has a significant amount of sugar.

This wasn't a very cheerful list, to put it mildly. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your sweets in the healthiest manner possible as a small Christmas present from me to you.

  • Make your selections carefully.

Take the time to choose the best holiday treats for yourself, just as you would while shopping for the perfect gifts for your family and friends. If you are concerned about cavities, have a temporary crown, wear braces, have broken a tooth in the past, or are just generally concerned about your oral health, avoid sticky, hard, and highly sweet desserts as much as possible.

When it comes to your holiday hosts, what can you take with a thankful (and relieved) smile? If you make it dark chocolate, you'll really obtain nutritional benefits such as magnesium and antioxidants, which should alleviate any concerns about eating soft chocolate on occasion. Cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and pies are all created with a lot of sugar, but hey, it is the holiday season, so why not indulge? Just make sure to follow our next few suggestions to avoid feeling guilty about that slice of cheesecake.

  • Sweets should be consumed with a meal.

Saliva has a purpose other than just keeping our mouths from becoming dry. It also aids in the prevention of cavities by washing away food particles and neutralizing the acids produced by food and bacteria, both of which are known to cause enamel damage.

If you eat dessert with your dinner, you will benefit from increased saliva production throughout the meal. As a result of frequent snacking throughout the day, this acid-neutralizing capacity is significantly diminished.

  • After you've finished eating, rinse your mouth with water.

After a meal or snack, particularly a sweet one, rinsing your mouth with water helps wash away the sticky sugars and carbohydrates, which oral bacteria turn into acids.

  • Brush your teeth as soon as possible. (Maybe.)

Brushing your teeth immediately after eating is always a good idea—well, nearly usually. For example, if you've been eating acidic foods such as citrus or colas, the acids in the meal may have weakened your enamel just enough to cause some possible enamel damage if you scour your teeth just after eating it. We often suggest waiting around 30 minutes before brushing to provide your enamel a chance to recuperate.

Every mouth, on the other hand, is unique. In the event that you have braces, if you have a tendency to have food trapped between your teeth or in your dental work, or if you have any other concerns, consult Dr. Marianne Cohan about the optimum times and techniques for holiday brushing.

Thanksgiving in North America

November 24, 2021
Smiling-older-60-300x225

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, which is usually a joyous time filled with eating, indulging, and spending time with family and friends, among other activities. Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to giving gratitude, and although it may seem like such a natural celebration, the United States is just one of a few of nations that recognizes it as a national holiday in their own countries.

Because Thanksgiving is a secular holiday, as opposed to many other holidays, it is observed on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States of America. As a matter of fact, it is observed on the second Monday of October in Canada, which is, strangely enough, considerably closer to the time of year when crops were most likely being harvested. In addition to the differences in dates, the origins of the event have also been traced back to various periods of time.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States.

Giving gratitude for a bountiful harvest is not a new tradition, but the origins of the modern-day Thanksgiving holiday in the United States may be traced back to a ceremony in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. This feast of thanksgiving was prompted by a bountiful harvest, and the tradition was simply carried on from generation to generation. At first, the colony at Plymouth did not have enough food to serve everyone in attendance, but the Native Americans assisted them by supplying seeds and teaching them how to fish, and they were soon able to host a feast worthy of the name of the colony. After a while, the custom spread, and by the 1660s, much of New England was celebrating the harvest with a feast in appreciation of the bounty.

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on November 23rd.

Martin Frobisher, an early Canadian explorer, is credited with establishing the first Thanksgiving celebration in the country. He survived the arduous journey from England through harsh weather conditions and rough terrain, and after his final voyage from Europe to present-day Nunavut, he held a formal ceremony to express his gratitude for his survival and good fortune. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1922. A feast was added to the festivities as time progressed and more settlers arrived, and the event rapidly became an annual event. Similarly, Samuel de Champlain is credited with the first official Thanksgiving celebration in appreciation of a good harvest; settlers who came with him in New France celebrated the harvest with a merry feast.

Thanksgiving in the Twenty-First Century

Thanksgiving is typically celebrated with the finest of Americana, as is customary today. Thanksgiving means roasted turkey, pumpkin pie, and green bean casserole, among other things, as well as feasts and football games, as well as getting ready for the start of the Christmas shopping season. No matter how you choose to commemorate this historic day, take a time to express gratitude for your friends, family, and all the blessings you have been blessed with. Summerlin Dental Solutions wishes you a happy Thanksgiving!

Tooth Sensitivity Treatments at Summerlin Dental Solutions

November 17, 2021

Girl-with-tooth-300x231

Dentine hypersensitivity (tooth sensitivity) can be described as a sharp and sudden pain caused by cold food and beverages. It’s present in more than half the population and result from receding gums that expose the root surfaces of your teeth.

That being said, hypersensitivity can be triggered by forceful tooth brushing, teeth whitening products, gum disease, and erosion from acid reflux, bulimia, or highly acidic foods. Symptoms can range from moderate to severe, depending on the cause and how quickly it’s treated.

Tooth sensitivity begins when the dentin develops some exposure. This layer that surrounds the nerve of the tooth is usually covered by gum tissue, but when recession takes place, the dentin can get exposed and the pain begins. The dentin contains numerous pores that run from the surface of the tooth inward. This direct connection to the nerve and blood supply of the tooth can be affected by external stimuli, such as the triggers cited above.

The good news is there are several different ways to treat dentinal hypersensitivity at Summerlin Dental Solutions.

Treatment of dentin tooth sensitivity begins by making an appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan. We encourage you to begin treatment sooner rather than later in order to figure out the cause and to reduce the pain you’re experiencing. In most cases, quick treatment options will solve the problem, including the use of desensitizing toothpaste, switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush, starting a daily fluoride rinse treatment, or minimizing teeth grinding with the help of a custom mouthguard.

For more serious cases, we may recommend you get crowns put on problematic teeth, start a gel or varnish fluoride treatment, or even schedule a surgical gum graft or root canal, depending on the cause and severity of your pain.

If you’re concerned about any tooth sensitivity you’re experiencing, please give our Las Vegas office a call and schedule an appointment. Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team want to help you identify the cause of your pain, and give you the best possible treatment plan. We look forward to seeing you to help alleviate discomfort and solve your tooth sensitivity.

Teeth Whitening and Your Smile at Summerlin Dental Solutions

November 10, 2021
teeth_whitening_smile-300x212

The best type of teeth whitening for your smile depends on what you are hoping to accomplish.

Whitening Toothpastes

This is certainly the easiest method of whitening, but will brushing alone produce your whitest smile? Probably not. Whitening toothpastes use chemicals and abrasives to remove some surface stains caused by foods, beverages and smoking. They can also be used to maintain the appearance of your teeth after a professional whitening. However, toothpaste alone cannot change the natural color of your teeth or penetrate the surface of the tooth to remove deeper stains. A whitening toothpaste usually takes several weeks to produce results. Be sure to choose a product with a seal of approval from a reputable dental association and carefully follow the instructions for use.

Whitening Strips and Gel Trays

Whitening gels can be applied at home with strips or tray kits. These peroxide-based gels are stronger than the formulas used in toothpaste.

Strips come coated with the whitening gel and work when pressed to your teeth for a specified amount of time. One difficulty here is making sure each tooth is completely covered by the strip so that even whitening takes place. Tray and gel whitening systems provide a mouthguard-like appliance that is filled with whitening gel and applied to your teeth, again for a specific period of time. Because one size does not fit all, stock trays can be ill fitting and lead to problems with gums and soft tissue. You can talk to our team about a custom-fitted appliance and whether gel whitening is your best option.

Some users find gel products cause tooth and gum sensitivity and even enamel damage. These over-the-counter gel products will not work on caps, veneers, crowns, or bridges, and there might be underlying conditions in your natural teeth that will make the use of these products ineffective. Please talk to us at your next visit to our Las Vegas office if you are interested in whitening at home, so we can advise you on how to achieve the best and safest outcome.

Office Treatment

Professional whitening makes use of a gel with a higher concentration of peroxide and should only be provided by Dr. Marianne Cohan or a member of our team at our Las Vegas office. This process is generally faster, more effective and longer lasting. We take care first to examine your teeth for pre-existing conditions such as cavities and gum disease that could cause problems. We protect your gums when the gel is applied in office and monitor the procedure. We can assess the progress of the whitening and suggest further treatment if needed. Custom mouthpieces can also be an option if you would like to use a whitening gel at home. A personally molded tray will fit your teeth perfectly and allow a more precise application of the peroxide gel.

Some teeth are not good candidates for normal whitening procedures at home or in office. If you have dark stains caused by trauma, drugs such as tetracycline, discoloration due to root canals, or darker dental bonding, crowns, or other prosthetics, please talk to us about other possible solutions. We want to help you achieve your brightest possible smile.

Top Reasons People Choose Veneers at Your Summerlin Dental Office

October 20, 2021

Top Reasons People Choose Veneers at Your Summerlin Dental Office

top-reasons-veneers

Dental veneers are a way to correct and transform your smile by using very thin shells of porcelain or ceramic material and bonding them to the front of your teeth. They are strong and durable, look and feel like natural teeth, and improve your smile immediately. Here are some of the top reasons to consider getting dental veneers.

They Correct Multiple Cosmetic Issues

Dental veneers can help with cosmetic and dental health issues, and treat multiple problems at once. Some common reasons that individuals choose veneers is to close gaps and spaces between the teeth, fix alignment issues, change the overall shape and appearance of a tooth, whiten a smile by covering stained or discolored teeth, and cover chipped or cracked teeth.

If you have teeth that are already worn down and weakened, veneers help prevent further damage by covering them with a thin, tooth-colored shell.

Durability

Dental veneers are also extremely durable. They last several years longer than traditional composite fillings. You’ll have peace of mind when you choose veneers, knowing that you’ll have your new smile for many years. On average, dental veneers last about ten to 15 years. Just like your natural teeth, when you take good care of your veneers, they last longer.

Easy to Clean and Maintain

Keeping your veneers healthy and white is easy: You simply brush and floss them the way you do all of your teeth. Shortly after having your veneers installed, you’ll begin to think of them as your natural teeth because the thin shells lie right on top of your existing teeth. This makes it easy to floss and brush the way you normally would and keep them as clean as possible.

The Process is Simple

Getting dental veneers is a quick and easy process. You have a few short visits at Summerlin Dental Solutions and see results. On average, it only takes about four weeks from your first appointment to your last to complete the veneer process.

If you are considering getting dental veneers, schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Marianne Cohan to find out exactly how they can benefit you.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month: An oral health routine

October 6, 2021
hygiene

Oral Hygiene is very important to your overall health. Adults are no strangers to feeling like there is never enough time in the day to get everything done. Your alarm clock rings and within minutes you ping pong around trying to spread peanut butter on sandwiches, answer your cell phone, remove the dog hair from your clothes, and make sure your child has completed his or her science fair project. Brushing your teeth can easily fall to the wayside. That is why our office promotes a simple, daily oral health regimen that you can easily incorporate into your busy lifestyle.

The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA), in partnership with the Wrigley Jr. Company, is celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM) during October. The ADHA encourages people to "Brush. Floss. Rinse. Chew...Keep it Clean, Keep it Healthy!" and offers some great tips for a quick and effective home oral health routine, below:

Oral Hygiene Health Routine at Home
  • Brushing your teeth twice daily is the most important thing you can do to diminish the accumulation of plaque and the potential for other oral problems such as cavities and gingivitis.
  • Flossing once daily removes plaque and food from beneath the gums and between teeth that brushing alone cannot remove. Tooth decay and gum disease often begin in these areas.
  • Rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial, non-alcohol based mouthwash kills plaque and gingivitis germs that brushing and flossing do not catch. We recommend using a mouthwash with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum helps produce saliva, which battles cavities. The gum also neutralizes plaque, strengthens enamel, and removes remaining food. It is especially important to chew gum after eating or drinking.
floss

It's easy to put the toothbrush down in order to take care of matters you feel are more urgent, but remember, a good oral health routine at home is the best way to prevent periodontal disease. "Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. An estimated 75 percent of Americans reportedly have some form of periodontal disease," said the ADHA. Periodontal disease also is linked to more serious illnesses such as diabetes and stroke.

Also, remember to keep regular visits with our office. Dr. Marianne Cohan can help you learn more about proper care for your teeth and gums.

Dental X-Rays: Are They Safe At Your Summerlin Dental Office?

dental_x_rays_xl_84631772

X-rays have been a function of dental healthcare for a long time. That in and of itself should be good news, because it means we've had plenty of time to improve them. While there is always some risk in exposure to radiation, dental X-ray exposure has decreased significantly due to all the advances in technology. So there’s risk, but X-rays are quite safe.

Think of X-rays as you would about a car. Automobiles these days have all kinds of technology to make them as safe as possible. There's still a chance that you’ll suffer an accident. Would you stop using a car because of that risk? When it comes to dental X-rays, Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team believe the positives clearly outweigh the negatives.

X-rays can be done digitally or with film. For film, X-rays require different exposures at different speeds to produce the image. Digital X-rays have software that automatically adjusts the exposure and produces the X-ray in a digital file. Since they substantially reduce your exposure to radiation, digital X-rays are the current standard in dental offices.

In addition to digital X-rays, lead aprons are an essential piece of X-ray safety. They help protect internal organs from X-rays by acting as a shield. They usually come with a thyroid collar as well, since that is one of the most vulnerable areas to X-rays in the body. Lead aprons can absorb up to 95% of any scatter rays that result from an X-ray. Not bad, right?

Although dental X-rays involve some radiation exposure (not all of it can be eliminated), so does everyday life. Getting too much sun, for example, can be dangerous. The truth is, we accumulate radiation in our bodies over a lifetime, so it’s worthwhile to be aware and avoid as much unnecessary exposure as possible. When it comes to your dental health, though, getting an X-ray — especially when your doctor says you need it — offers more benefits than risks.

Which is Better For Teeth: Diet Soda vs. Regular Soda

September 22, 2021

Diet Coke will be healthier for your teeth if you avoid the bacteria-feeding sugar found in normal soda, according to Dr. Marianne Cohan. That seems to be rational, doesn't it? There's a little more to it than that, to be honest. Consider the following: any kind of soda may have a negative impact on your oral hygiene.

Diet soda: Why it may cause teeth to decay as well as other health problems

The acidity of these beverages is the primary factor in the development of tooth decay. Typically, diet sodas and other sugar-free beverages are rich in acidity, which weakens the enamel on your teeth and makes them more vulnerable to cavities and tooth erosion. Sugar-free beverages often contain significant levels of phosphoric acid, citric acid, and/or tartaric acid, thus it's recommended to avoid them if at all possible.

Some patients also appreciate drinking orange juice or other citrus liquids, according to their preferences. These beverages are rich in citric acid and have the same impact on the enamel of your teeth as sodas and other acidic beverages.

What about normal soda, you ask?

teeth

We all know that the acidity of diet sodas and sugar-free beverages leads to tooth disease, but what about ordinary soda? Does it have the same effect? In addition to the sugar content (a 12-ounce can of soda has around 10 teaspoons of sugar), ordinary soda also includes carbohydrates, which feed the decay-causing bacteria found in the mouth. This includes sports drinks and energy drinks, which are both high in acidity and high in sugar content, as well as other beverages. As a result, these beverages offer a double punch of sugar and acidity that your teeth and body do not need.

When you drink soda throughout the day, the issues created by both diet and normal soda are amplified. It's better to drink it all in one sitting so that you don't have to worry about cleaning sugar and/or acids off your teeth throughout the day and so that your saliva has a chance to balance the pH in your mouth.

What are the greatest drinks to consume and how should they be consumed

Making a conscious effort to consume liquids that are low in acid is an excellent strategy for maintaining healthy teeth and enamel. Root beer, plain water, black tea, and coffee are the healthiest options, according to research done by Matthew M. Rodgers and J. Anthony von Fraunhofer at the University of Michigan. If you must drink a soda, plain water, black tea, and coffee are the best options. When measured 14 days after the beverage was consumed, these beverages dissolved the least amount of enamel in the test tube.

For those who still prefer to consume soda, diet soda, sugar-free beverages, or juices, here are some additional recommendations to help you avoid tooth decay:

  • Drinking soda or acidic liquids using a straw can help to reduce contact between your teeth and the acid.
  • Immediately after consuming the beverage, flush the mouth with plenty of water.
  • You should refrain from brushing your teeth between 30 minutes and an hour after consuming the beverage since doing so has been demonstrated to distribute the acids before you saliva can restore the pH to a neutral state in your mouth.
  • Drinks with acids stated on the ingredient label should be avoided at all costs.

Dental Veneers in Summerlin, NV

Dr. Marianne Cohan and our team at Summerlin Dental Solutions know your smile is an important part of your appearance; it can be a source of pride or embarrassment. Everyone deserves beautiful, straight teeth that complement their features, but few are born with natural dental perfection. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in recent years, with veneers making it possible to make over your smile completely.

With dental veneers, the smile of your dreams can become a reality. These thin, wafer-like shells are crafted of porcelain and completely customized to fit your smile. Once your tooth size, shape, and color have been determined, veneers are adhered to the surface of your natural tooth, instantly transforming your appearance. What used to be a secret of the rich and famous is now highly accessible to dental patients around the world.

Benefits of dental veneers

Appearance

Dental veneers are very natural in appearance and virtually undetectable to other people. Their non-porous surfaces make them resistant to staining, which ensures they do not change color over time.

Improvements

veneers

Dental veneers can be used to improve the appearance of many kinds of imperfections. In fact, an entirely new smile can be crafted from veneers, to cover up chipped teeth, discoloration, and gaps between teeth.

Durability

Veneers are long-lasting cosmetic enhancements that can survive many years with appropriate care and maintenance. They are specially fabricated to be resistant to scratches and chipping, which makes them a practical solution for the average person.

Flexibility

Dental veneers are highly adaptable. You can opt for only a single veneer to repair a chipped or cracked tooth, or you can modify multiple teeth at once for a smile makeover.

Considerations

Keep in mind that cosmetic treatments like dental veneers are secondary to primary dental care. You must have healthy teeth and disease-free gums to be a candidate for cosmetic procedures. An initial consultation at our convenient Las Vegas office will reveal any underlying decay or other problems that must be addressed prior to getting veneers. Give us a call today!
